Reflections of Blue by Abbey K. Bowen

About Reflections of Blue by Abbey K. Bowen:

After a summer like no other spent at her uncle’s farmhouse, Seraphine is given instructions to enter an alternate world filled with new friends, love, betrayal, never-ending life, and perpetual suffering.

Seraphine, a teenager from a poor family, is sent away for the summer to live on her uncle’s strawberry farm. She’s been shipped off like this before, but this time is different. She is pleasantly surprised when she walks into the previously dark-lit farmhouse to find Janusz (or “Jonesy,” as she later calls him), an immigrant from Poland who allegedly came to work on the farm. His bright personality instantly illuminates the house, but his frail body leads Sera to question his presence there. Not wanting to anger her short-tempered uncle, however, she does not initially make any inquiries on the matter. Instead, she attempts to exist as Uncle Ford prefers—neither seen nor heard as much as possible. But when it becomes clear that Jonesy actually cares to spend time with her, the two of them become fast friends as they bond over “breakfast picnics” and watching the sunrise.

Throughout the next few months, Sera sees Jonesy’s body deteriorating and her uncle’s demeanor changing for the worse. She also continues receiving hints—mostly in the form of stern, hushed conversations—about Jonesy’s mysterious illness, the nature of his relationship with Uncle Ford, and the secret place he was before arriving at the farm.

Eventually, when she realizes it is no longer in Jonesy’s best interest to stay with her uncle, she enlists the help of her parents to get him removed from the farmhouse. As expected, Uncle Ford is less than happy when he learns of Jonesy’s disappearance, and he takes out his frustrations by drinking heavily and physically abusing Sera.

After enduring numerous beatings and assaults, Sera confides in a family friend, Kailas, who was sent by her mom and dad to ensure her well-being after Jonesy successfully escapes. Unfortunately, similar to her parents, Kailas is strapped for cash and cannot provide Sera with safety under her roof. But she gifts a set of instructions that will allow Sera to escape into what she initially believes is a deep meditative state. However, Sera soon realizes she has actually been given access to an alternate reality she never dreamed existed . . .

Bridgette L. Collins

Featured Interview With Bridgette L. Collins

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Happy New Year! My is Bridgette L. Collins. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I lived in the Dallas, Texas area for nearly 20 years, and now I’m back living in the Houston area. My hobbies include reading, visiting historical museums when I’m traveling, experimenting with cooking healthy meals, working out at the gym, and training for and participating in marathon race events. As I’m moving around interacting with people I meet on my varied journeys, I used the experiences to enhance my writings.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My fascination for reading books happened in my young adulthood. I fell in love with all books by John Grisham. Early on in my human resources career I pursued resources that would help me enhance my business and leadership skills, so I then fell in love with books by Stephen R. Covey and John C. Maxwell. As a human resources professional, I was always tasked with writing. Developing or revising human resources manuals, policies, and procedures. Writing extensive investigative reports. Writing staff and organizational performance documents. But it would be later in my life that I would develop a love for writing books. After becoming a personal trainer and running coach, I developed a love for writing novel-like self-help books filled with stories about overcoming the challenges to live healthier: mind, body, and soul.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Because I’ve always been focused on being a better version of myself, my favorite authors include Stephen R. Covey and John C. Maxwell. Their writings have inspired my writings as I provide a different perspective on what being a better version of one’s self can look like.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My new book, “Yes! I Am Fed Up. Now What? 4 Self-Driven to MOVE Your Well-being and Work Forward”, lays the groundwork for the reader to analyze the root cause, the underlying factors, of their fed-up state. The goal is to provoke consciousness and inspire the reader to ask the question, ‘Now What?’ And then move forward with creating an action plan to respond to their ‘Now What?’

Quick Question. Have you ever been FED UP with someone or something in your personal or professional life? Maybe you didn’t say FED UP… maybe you said I’m frustrated with or tired of. The fact is that if you’re not conscious of or deliberate in your move from that state of being, you’ll find yourself stuck right there on FED UP, frustrated with or tired of, which will impact your ability to BE the best version of yourself.

In my new book, I share 4 steps that provokes consciousness and will help drive your “Now What?”. Those 4 steps – Self-Analysis, Self-Transformation, Self-Evolution, and Self-Narration – provide insight into plans and actions you can take to analyze the aspects of your life that you’re not happy with or unfulfilled in – plans and actions that can help you discover ways to transform your state of being so you can evolve and create the narrative you want to represent your life.

While reading the book, I want you to keep four words in your thoughts: master, omit, visualize, and execute (MOVE). When I say MOVE, my book serves as a guide for how you can master, omit, visualize, and execute the things you need to master, omit, visualize, and execute so you can be the best version of yourself.

There are exercises throughout the book. Targeted worksheets at the end of the book to help you go under construction to determine what your MOVEs can look like. Yes, under construction because most often you have to unearth some things to repair, replace, and reconfigure so you can effectively drive yourself and MOVE forward with purpose and intention.

Featured Interview With Boshra Rasti

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Boshra Rasti was raised in British Columbia, Canada and works as an expatriate teacher in Qatar. She received a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership at Royal Roads University, which proved a fateful blow to her belief in anything hierarchical. However, it did spark her desire to flee from the real world and start writing about other ones. When she is not working to earn a living, she enjoys the escape that reading and writing lend her. She also enjoys physical running, even if it is of the sadistic variety in Qatar.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was a late reader, meaning I didn’t learn to read well until I was in grade 3 or 4. The first book that made me want to devour books was the Chronicles of Narnia series. I absolutely adored the world building and the sense that I could find refuge in a book.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I read a lot of different authors. I love dystopia and sci-fi. I just think the world building in it is so spectacular. I love Octavia Butler and the former Soviet Block writers.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Surrogate Colony is a post-pandemic, dystopian novel about a world where algorithms control essential aspects of freewill. Harmony is the all-knowing database that determines your family, your partner, how many hours of free time one has, what position in society one is given. It is a radical world, but one that isn’t unimaginable far-out. We’ve had many of our personal liberties and freedoms stifled in the last couple of years, allowing for unreal precedents to be set by governments around the world. Some arguably necessary; others not so much.

D. David Croot

Featured Interview With D. David Croot

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
D. David Croot has been writing on and off (pretty much continually) for nineteen hundred years. He is no preternatural creature, no no no real special abilities, but he’s put in his four-trillion hours and it’s all for you my sweaty precious mongols.
-Follow the Feeling (most approachable for all)
-Twenty-first mankind blues (my favourite)
-The lovers (bonkers but new to literature)
-The general pointlessness of being (Coming of age written unlike anybody else)

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I never read a word until I was twenty-one.
Actually…Flat Stanley when I was five. Stolen from the schools library. I have it, it still exists.
And then from twenty-one onwards, that time in your life where something worthwhile must be achieved…I wrote.
and failed
and failed
and failed
until I managed to conjure up Follow the Feeling. Then…then it grew from there. That was about four years of scribing 5-7 days a week. Whenever I could (ten failed novels in-between!) and others followed.
and then I failed
and failed and failed to get readers…

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
All the dead ones:
Knut Hamsun — Pan, mysteries,
Alberto Moravia- Boredom and contempt
Charles Bukowski — anything really.
Louis Ferdinand Celine — Journey to the end of the night
Herman Hesse, Yukio Mishima, Dostoevsky (hate spelling this legends name), Steve Tesich (Karoo is sublime), Strindberg and Baudelaire’s spirit lives on through me in a weird way.
and probably a fuck tonne more!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I am in the process of finishing a novel about time.
The fairytale, the myth, the man (working title).
There are life’s ebbs and flows, part poetry, part prosody. Recurring motifs recycling themselves into new and intricate ways. It near enough sent me insane. Think Kobo Abe’s Kafka-esque dreams…

After a humiliating year of therapy and eating crow, her husband Mike has agreed to take her back, as long as she continues to keep her inner diva in check.

Beyond the Song by Carol Selick

Beyond the Song by Carol Selick book cover
About Featured Book: Beyond the Song by Carol Selick

Beyond the Song is an autobiographical novel based on the author’s coming of age in the ‘sixties and early ‘seventies. A singer-songwriter like her alter-ego Carol Marks, Carol Selick begins each chapter with lyrics she wrote and still performs today. Taken together, the songs introduce the themes of her story and trace the development of her character as she rebels against her strict suburban upbringing to join the counter-culture in hopes of fulfilling her dream of making it in the music business.

The narrator relates her tale in a warm, vulnerable, and irrepressibly zany voice as Carol goes to school in Washington DC, drops out to take a pilgrimage to Berkeley, and eventually winds up living in New York in pursuit of making it in the music business. Torn between romance and career, she continually wavers.

Her quest for freedom lands her in a series of dangerous situations and narrow escapes: she hitchhikes in California at the time of the Manson murders, attends anti-war demonstrations that turn violent, and is nearly arrested when her boyfriend is nabbed in a drug raid.
Along the way, the narrator also meets two important guides who help her sort her priorities, take herself seriously, and develop her considerable talents: Rose, a pioneering black woman songwriter based on hall-of-famer Rose Marie McCoy, Carol’s real-life mentor; and Bruce Pasternak, a fictionalized psychoanalyst who helps her establish the self-assurance to stand on her own two feet at a time when female singer-songwriters had few role models. All inform the heroine’s lyrics and narrative voice as she gradually learns to believe in herself, discipline her talent, and turn her heartbreak into song.

American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation by Seth David Radwell

About Featured Book: American Schism: How the Two Enlightenments Hold the Secret to Healing our Nation by Seth David Radwell

Limited time ebook price of $0.99 throughout the month of January.

An enlightened exploration of history to unite a deeply divided America

Two disparate Americas have always coexisted. In this thoroughly researched, engaging and ultimately hopeful story of our nation’s divergent roots, Seth David Radwell clearly links the fascinating history of the two American Enlightenments to our raging political division. He also demonstrates that reasoned analysis and historical perspective are the only antidote to irrational political discourse.

“Did my vision of America ever exist at all, or was it but a myth?” Searching for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life, Radwell’s very personal and yet broadly shared question propelled his search back to our nation’s founding for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life – and led to a surprising discovery. Today’s battles reflect the fundamentally divergent visions of our country that emerged at our nation’s founding and have been vying for prominence ever since. The founding principles that shaped the United States may be rooted in the Enlightenment era. But the origin of our dual Americas is a product of two distinct Enlightenments – Radical and Moderate.

American Schism begins with a quick reintroduction to the pre-Enlightenment Middle Ages and then takes readers on an in-depth journey through the revolutionary Enlightenment period including the eventual schism that began in Europe but then found its way to American shores. Radwell shows the impact of this schism on American history from the early expansion of the U.S. through Jim Crow and The Age of Trumpism.

In an optimistic and rigorous final section, Radwell lays out an analysis of our current governmental structure and a plan to move forward, demonstrating that it is only by embracing Enlightenment principles that we can build a civilized, progressive, and tolerant society – where Americans can firmly ground their different views in rationality.

Featured Author Kate Phyre

Kate Phyre

Featured Interview With Kate Phyre

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a writer, actor and pet-mom of very demanding kitties, living with a very patient partner. When I’m not writing I’m obsessed with creating mixed medium sculpture from reclaimed industrial materials, gazing at the PNW stars and fascinated by all things mysterious. Also feeding the kitties is my main purpose in life… according to the cats, of course.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I taught myself to read at the age of three. One day while watching my mother read to me the strange black lines on the page suddenly snapped into focus and became words I could understand. It happened all at once and utterly shocked my mother when she discovered me reading to my stuffed animals later that day. She tested me with a book I’d never seen before and turns out I actually did teach myself to read. I was writing stories and poetry by the age of 7 and reading at a college level by age 13.
Books became my escape and refuge when life took a much darker turn and I discovered more of the world than one should at that age but I’ll save the gory details for my memoir.
I like writing fiction because I can be utterly truthful.
I like writing science fiction because I’m fascinated with our potential as a species to create amazing almost impossible things and the license to wrestle with the larger sociological implications of our actions.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My early influences were the classics, English Lit masters like Dickens, Shakespeare and Tolkien. Later the American science fiction authors duked it out with Mark Twain, Longfellow and EE Cummings for space on my overflowing bookshelf. Eclectic is still how my tastes run. Although I love science fiction and write in that genre I read widely in non-fiction, philosophy, political, hard science, biology, astronomy and physics journals – you know, just for fun…

Featured Interview With Rachel Griffin

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Name: Rachel Griffin
Hometown: Cleveland, OH
Founder | Owner | CEO of Pen & Camera

My journey officially began at age thirteen. I had suddenly began writing poetry in my notebooks in my bedroom. I was feeling, thinking and going through so much before, and after, that I wasn’t conscious of what I was doing. That led to me being solid on my future career. Photography had not been considered an addition until my final year of high school. Realizing how fun it is and how much I could incorporate that into what I write, the more confident I became in my decision.

Though Pen & Camera went through many growing pains since 2015, so did I. Which is why I began writing, let alone start my business. It’s also why I photograph and video so much now. I have a voice and I’m choosing to use it for positivity. I haven’t had many positive voices in my ear. I wish to be that positive voice for someone else. Even if it’s just one person, we can all heal, grow and be better for ourselves and each other.

Growing up in Cleveland, there’s so many opportunities. Only if you aren’t being held back by outside forces. I can imagine how much I could’ve done, but everything happens for a reason. Though I wished for a different life, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If it weren’t for my own traumas and healing from them, I probably wouldn’t have been inspired to write as much as I have. And once I have many acres of land, it’ll be a paradise for all animals. Especially the dogs. I’ll never treat them how my elders have.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I began writing when I was about thirteen years old. My fascination for books began then as well. I hadn’t fully realized my fascination for books or writing until I was a senior in high school. That’s when a lot of the things I was wasn’t too sure about began to solidify

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I don’t have a favorite genre or author to read. I pick up whichever seems the most interesting or informative to me. My favorite poet, Maya Angelou, inspired me to continue with poetry. MY grandmother inspired me to continue with whichever inspires happiness within me and doesn’t harm anyone else.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Deja Soul is a purple Phoenix who’s role is to be the leader of her planet Magma Wilds. Unfortunately, she began losing her memories after her first reincarnation. Not knowing what to do or where to begin, she meets with all of her sisters. City by city, she would travel to each one in the hopes of getting her questions answered. She doesn’t have to travel alone, because they refuse to leave her when they’re needed the most. Most importantly, she needs herself at the best she can be. Will her siblings techniques work? Will Deja ever remember and be the phoenix she wants to be? the leader everyone knows she can be?

This book took the better part of 2020 to write and complete. I wanted this one to be just as special as my first, Khyrus: Deity of Virtue & Strength. In Deja Soul, I wished for women to see how much we can accomplish by coming together. Show each other that we don’t always have to go through something alone. I also wish for this to be an example to young girls so they’ll grow up with that mentality. Entertaining with a message. Planting seeds to nuture future generations.

Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs: Lessons for Life and Leadership by Ronald Dwinnells MD MBA

About Featured Book: Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs: Lessons for Life and Leadership by Ronald Dwinnells MD MBA

Only $0.99 for a limited time!

Everyone wants to know what to do to be successful. But if you’re wondering what you should NOT do, here’s all you need to know!

Ron Dwinnells sought leadership skills from early on in his career, and Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs is the delightful and informative culmination of that search. If you’re looking for insights into how to deal with situations and enhance your life at home and in your career, Dwinnells delivers—with advice via chapters with names like “Don’t Fly with Turkeys,” “Don’t Dress like a Warthog,” “Don’t Be a Jamoke,” and “Don’t Run Over the Cat.”

Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs began serendipitously while Dwinnells was teaching public health and leadership classes at a local medical school. He advised his students what-not-to-do as a leader through entertaining stories from his own very unique background, conveying lessons he had learned from failures, adversities, mistakes, and even enemies from leadership experiences along the way.

The lecture series became so popular with students it won him accolades and several teaching awards—and pressure to write his stories down. Dr. Dwinnells, a pediatrician and certified physician executive, did just that, and we’re the beneficiaries. But don’t let the clever chapter titles fool you. Don’t Pick Up All the Dog Hairs is full of serious wisdom in chapters like “Don’t Fail to Prioritize,” “Don’t Be a Manager When You Are Supposed to Be a Leader,” and “Don’t Drain the Emotional Bank Account.” So put down the vacuum and enjoy some advice (and laughter) while learning to be your best.

Ron Dwinnells is the CEO of ONE Health Ohio, an integrated community health center program serving the medically uninsured, underinsured, and underserved populations in northeast Ohio. His clinics have served over one million patients during his 35 years at the helm.

Granite Elephants by Tom Rhyne

About Featured Book: Granite Elephants by Tom Rhyne

$0.99 for a limited time!

“That’s what always worries me about you two. Killings bring a lot of heat.”

Granite Elephants, Tom Rhyne’s debut work, is an entertaining thriller with a likeable and relatable protagonist, Jury Garrett, a near-50 ex-cop who spends some of his time as a private investigator, but only on cases he likes. Set in Austin, Texas, and Belgium, the story starts with a phone call from a young and beautiful wife, Janelle Kinlaw, whose husband, Walter, an equally young high-tech entrepreneur, has disappeared during a trip to Europe.

Jury’s work on her case soon leads him into conflicts with the U.S. Army, who had funded Walter’s start-up company in Austin, with some criminal types who wanted to collect on a sub rosa loan their New York lending agency had made to him, with the Austin Police Department, and with a highly placed banking official in Brussels. As Jury follows a complex series of rabbit trails to find out “Where’s Walter,” he uses a number of former associates whose specialized knowledge helps him learn why the entrepreneur had gone missing, knowledge that includes applications of artificial intelligence to international currency trading.

Anyone who has spent time in Austin will find this well-crafted, down-to-earth page-turner of very special interest.

It’s hot, Texas, and the year 1977. Jimmy Carter is in office.

The Walters are a good, churchgoing family who stand for holiness, purity, grace, and Christian love. Except when they don’t.

Family patriarch and fanatic preacher, Victor Black, knows many things for sure, including the fact that abortion is murder and should be punishable by death—a position he defends live in a televised debate. Black’s youngest granddaughter, Stephanie Walters, sits in the front row wearing her frilly Sunday dress, listening carefully to every word.

But it doesn’t take long for cracks to appear in the Walters upstanding family façade. Stephanie’s mother, Lily, begins telling unsettling stories about having a baby who died, and her story keeps changing. It’s clear Lily has a secret—one that righteous Victor Black would kill her for if he knew. This family secret burns more than the lies . . .

From the Moon I Watched Her is a coming-of-age tale about the skeletons that lurk under church pews and the little girl who goes looking for and finds them. Amid the dark and quirky terrain of camp revivals, burning crosses, and public shunnings, one child from the Southern Churches of Christ cries out.
