Featured Interview With Ed Marohn

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in Boise, Idaho, although I was born in Rothenburg, Germany, in a Displaced Persons camp operated under the US Army. I was born the 24th US Army Field Hospital stationed there. My mother was a DP, a freed Nazi slave laborer who had been incarcerated in a concentration camp from 1942-45.
After graduating from the University of Idaho in 1968 and I was commissioned an officer in the US Army. After Airborne and Ranger training, I served with the 25th Infantry Division and the 101st Airborne (Airmobile) Division in the Vietnam War, where I commanded a combat unit. My awards included three Bronze Stars, one Air Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, one US Army Vietnam Campaign Medal with two campaigns, the South Vietnamese Campaign Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm. I served in Germany and also Holland (Dutch language trained by the US State Department) and was the Assistant Professor of Military History at the University of Nevada, Reno. At U of N, I earned my MA in Counseling (psychology). After headhunters recruited me I became an executive with Continental AG and Michelin Tire Corporation, both International Fortune 500 companies.
After retirement from the corporate world to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 2008, I volunteered as a VA facilitator for military veterans with PTSD because of my combat experience in the Vietnam War. Additionally, I served as a Board Member, then eventually Vice Chairman, of the Idaho Humanities Council (National Endowment for the Humanities). Concurrently I sat as Board Member of the Idaho Falls City Club. In 2014 I got elected to a four-year term to the Idaho Falls City Council. I wrote as a Local Columnist for the Idaho Falls Post Register and have had my fiction and non-fiction published in multiple magazines.
With my wife Cathie, we have traveled extensively to include Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Panama, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. The most significant trip was my return to Vietnam some thirty years after the war, where my novel, Legacy of War, began. It was published in July 2019
I am currently writing a sequel novel.
I grew up with dogs and cats but no longer have pets.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My fascination with books started early in grade school, The public library enticed me to spend numerous hours searching for interesting reads.
The effective period for my writing began in college and started to flourish once I graduated and became an officer in the US Army. I was still on active duty when I wrote my thesis for my Master’s degree in 1975. My first magazine article was published at the same time: a piece about brainwashing. That first check for writing hooked me. I have been scribing ever since.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorite authors are John Updike, Norman Mailer, Stephen King, Jon Krakauer, William Manchester, Joseph Conrad, and Fredrick Logevall to name a few.
I enjoy both nonfiction ( history, political science, philosophy, economics) and fiction (various genre: mystery, crime, historical, action-adventure, thriller, etc.)
Good books and good authors help me to push my writing, to entice the readers. And in the end, my characters inspire me; they set the tone, they set the timeline, and they create the numerous subplots.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Legacy of War is an action-adventure novel immersed in a mystery dealing with revenge. A PTSD patient triggers Psychologist John Moore’s traumatic memories of the Vietnam War. Moore, the protagonist, is compelled to return to modern-day Vietnam, confronting his past war demons: the killing fields, corrupt South Vietnamese Army officers, and the CIA’s Phoenix Program. Again in the decaying jungles, he fights to keep his ethics and moral high ground, while also struggling over his wife’s death from cancer.
The novel took ten years to write, triggered by my trip back to Vietnam in 2009.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. But I studied English there since I was very young–I always mention in my book signings that I don’t have an accent when I write! I came to the United States in 1996 and currently live in Hobbs, New Mexico, where I teach English as a Second Language and Spanish at New Mexico Junior College. My husband and I have three dogs: a Rhodesian Ridgeback that weighs 120 lbs, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a cute, blue-eyed mutt.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was a nerdy kid…always with a book in my hands. I moved from reader to writer at around thirteen years old…my first stories were what you would call “Gothic” today, only that we didn’t use that term in Cuba, back then. My friends said they were just…well, weird. But I had fun writing them!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite author in English is Anne Tyler. In Spanish, Leopoldo Alas (Clarin). I read all genres, really. No favorites, though I like mysteries and memoirs. My friends, colleagues and quirky characters, in general, inspire me.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
When I finished Death Comes in through the Kitchen (Soho Press, 2018) I wasn’t even sure I would write a second mystery. But the Queen of Bones characters started appearing to me as soon as the first novel was sent to the publisher. Padrino, the santero detective, and Marlene Martinez, the Cuban Police lieutenant, insisted they wanted to appear in another book. Bueno! I obliged. It took me around nine months to finish the book. Queen of Bones is a mystery, but I also think of it as a Havana travelogue—readers get to know about the cemetery One of the largest in Latin America) well-to-do neighborhoods like El Vedado, and the very interesting Havana Chinatown, since one of the main characters, Juan Chiong, grew up there. There are also Santeria elements (Santeria is an Afro-Cuban syncretic religion) as well as plenty of food references because I like to cook, and to eat, as much as I like to write.

Featured Interview With David Lee Summers

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is David Lee Summers and I write science fiction, steampunk, and horror.

I was raised in Southern California. My dad was a locomotive machinist who started his career at the end of the steam era and who loved history. When I was a child, we’d travel around the United States to different historical sites. Sometimes, we’d play “what if” games imagining different outcomes to famous battles or wondering what would happen if a certain technology had been introduced a little sooner. This became a great foundation for the kinds of things I write, both in asking “what if” and seeing different parts of the country.

My formal education is in astrophysics and, besides writing, I operate telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. It’s a great job for a science fiction writer because it puts me at the forefront of a lot of cutting edge science.

I don’t have any pets because my kids have allergies, but I have owned dogs, cats, and turtles in the past and love them all.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My fascination with books goes back to when I first learned to read. I especially loved a collection of Bible stories my grandmother used to read with me when I was very young. The first chapter book I remember reading was James Cloyd Bowman’s “Pecos Bill: The Greatest Cowboy of All Time.”

I also discovered the TV series Star Trek when I was about 7 years old and watched it regularly. As I got a little older, I noticed the names of the writers at the beginning of each episode and would seek them out at the local library. This was a great thing as it introduced me to some of the great writers in the business, including Harlan Ellison, Theodore Sturgeon, Norman Spinrad, and Jerome Bixby. Reading these wonderful writers made me want to become a writer myself.

As a kid, I was a little more visually oriented than word-oriented, so I would tell stories by drawing pictures, but I began to get serious about writing when I was in high school. I made my first attempts at writing novels and short stories in my high school years. While in high school, I was fortunate enough to meet Ray Bradbury who encouraged me to keep improving my craft.

I continued to write and to improve through college and finally got serious about submitting my work soon afterward. I wrote my first novel which was actually published in 1992.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love to read the genres I write. In science fiction, I love the works of Robert A. Heinlein, A. Bertram Chandler, and Lois McMaster Bujold. Having grown up on Star Trek, I love space adventure and I love the kinds of stories these folks tell.

In steampunk, I’m especially fond of Gail Carriger and Richard Harland. Carriger helps me see the fun side of steampunk while Harland keeps me grounded in social sensibilities.

Stephen King’s “On Writing” was a great, inspirational book and his horror novels inspire my horror writing as well. Classic horror authors like Bram Stoker and Sheridan Le Fanu are also among my favorites.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called “Firebrandt’s Legacy” It tells the story of a space pirate named Ellison Firebrandt who fights the good fight for Earth. Operating under a letter of marque, he raids the ships of Earth’s opponents, slowing down their progress and ability to compete with the home system. On the planet Epsilon Indi 2, he rescues a woman named Suki Mori from a drug lord, only to find she isn’t so happy about living a pirate’s life. However, when the captain finds a new engine that will make him the most successful pirate of all, Suki is the only one who can make it work. Now Firebrandt must find a way to keep his crew fed and his ship supplied while relying on a woman who barely trusts him and while every government in the galaxy hunts him to get the engine back!

Beverly AdamFeatured Interview With Beverly Adam

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Although I was born in the Midwest, I’m pretty much a California gal. I was raised in Altadena, a small foothill community located below the shadow of Mount Wilson in Southern California. I attended Pasadena public schools, including the renowned college, Pasadena City College, where I received an Associate Arts degree in Photojournalism. I had my first exposure to writing screenplays there, of which two won first prizes. As a sophomore, I interned with the Pasadena Star News, the local newspaper, where I wrote and had my photographs published. I recently returned to the area a few months ago to live. At present I have no furry companions, but take my parents’ dog on daily walks in the lovely tree-lined streets here.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started writing at a very early age. I attempted writing a full-length novel when I was ten years old. Books were and still are my constant companion. I am a voracious reader, usually reading a novel, a biography, and a book of short stories or comic book series, alternating between them as my mood dictates. There is nothing worse than being somewhere, standing in line at the post office for example, and not having a book in my hand.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I enjoy reading my fellow Lachesis Publishing romance/paranormal authors, cozy murder mysteries, and the occasional biography. I recently finished reading Fly Girls by Keith O’ Brien, and women’s history holds a special place in my heart. I have written and researched two women who made their mark in history, one in film, the starlet Carole Lombard, and the other in photography, Mrs. Mary Jane Wyatt, pioneer traveling railroad photographer.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I rewrote and edited She Rode The Rails this year. The book was featured several years ago in Barnes and Noble Bookstores and written about by the Associated Press. It’s been over a decade and I need a publisher (crossing my fingers and saying a little prayer), who would want to republish it and give the cover an updated look.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am an author, freelance writer and the chief ideator of Kahani Takbak, a platform to promote Indian children’s books, authors and illustrators. I was raised in several towns across India. Currently, I live in Chennai, India.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Books have been a part of my life since early childhood. We lived in small towns where there was adequate time to read plenty of books. I started writing when my child turned three. He loved storybooks. We frequently ran out of books to read and our preferred library was a two-hour drive from home. I started creating stories to keep my child occupied and soon ventured into writing them.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Though I read all kinds of books, I am partial to the mystery, mythology, adventure and sci-fi genres. I am inspired by authors who churn their creativity and continue to bring out books regularly.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a collection of 26 short stories for adults. The stories are set in urban and rural India.
Tanna’s wedding is happening soon. He takes it on himself to clean the house and stumbles upon a satchel belonging to his dead postman father. Even worse, he discovers a bunch of letters that never got mailed. Tanna almost tosses the letters out but acting on an instinct of responsibility, he decides to post them. What happens to people when these letters arrive after more than a decade is explored through twenty-six stories that contain generous doses of love, betrayal, suspicion, frustration, ambition, and redemption. Strangely, each person would have chosen a different route in life had they received them in time…A misplaced letter, a new path…such is LIFE!

Featured Interview With Ashlyn Chase

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in suburban Boston, MA, now living in coastal Florida with my superhero husband Mr. Amazing, and 2 adorable cats. I was a registered nurse for 20 years until I decided to write full time. My contemporary and paranormal books are always romantic and humorous. I won Best First Book for Heaving Bosoms, a rom com, and have been a bestselling author on Amazon before self-publishing existed. Now a hybrid author, I am doing both traditional and Indie publishing.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was going to be a fine artist, so missed the clues that I should be a WRITER. I received an A+ from a tough creative writing teacher, and still didn’t get it. In high school I got my heart broken and sat down to read, hoping that would take my mind off of it. It did. I read The Godfather in a couple days.
Still didn’t think about writing. In nursing school I began keeping a journal. That was helpful, but just for discipline and looking at the world a little differently. I finally took a screenwriting course and learned to tell stories when I needed a creative outlet, and eventually turned them into novels.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I like to read what I enjoy writing. Mary Janice Davidson invented paranormal chick-lit. I’ve been a fan for ages. Also, Eve Langlais, Robyn Peterman, Sally Painter, etc.

Featured Interview With Sonam Chamaria

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m Sonam – a young girl with big dreams.
I’m an investment banker by profession, a Tarot card reader, Chakra healer, doodle artist (@SoulArtwithsonam), blogger (www.soulspeakwithsonam.com), traveler and avid reader, by choice.
I am spiritual by nature and practice Nichiren Buddhism. I started Tarot reading when I was only 13 years old and owe a lot of my spiritual inclination to it. I am very fond of exploring new places, learning new languages, and bookstagramming.
I was born and brought up in Kolkata (India), did my graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) Delhi, followed by Masters from Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, UK.
I am currently based out of Bangalore, India, where I stay alone 🙂

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have been obsessed with books for as long as I can remember. From Enid Blyton to Alfred Hitchcock, to Jane Austen to Carolyn Keene – I would read whatever I could lay my hands on. My favourite childhood memory involves going to the annual Book Fair in our city and coming home loaded with books!
I have been penning down my thoughts all my life. A poem here, a piece there. But if I were to put a date, I properly started writing in February 2016 when I started my blog – www.soulspeakwithsonam.com
I started my blog with the intention of authoring my own book and 4 years down the line, here I am.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favourite authors include Daphne du Maurier, Margaret Atwood, Jodi Picoult.
While I mostly write non-fiction pieces, I love reading contemporary fiction and have a soft spot for African-American literature. I am also fascinated by books based on WWII.
My favourite books include Roots by Alex Haley, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, and The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Devakaruni.
An author whose writing style I love is Jhumpa Lahiri – there is something about the way she expressed emotions that makes my insides squirm. I admire the ease with which the writing flows in books by Liane Moriarty and Celeste Ng.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
‘From Stressed to Sorted’ is a self-help book, but with a twist. It has especially been written for people who wish to simplify their lives but simply have no time.
The book is a collection of 11 happiness hacks designed to help you destress in less than 5 minutes and equip you to deal with everyday stressful situations. Each chapter is divided into three – a fiction bit to help you relate to the situation, a non-fiction bit, and practical exercises to try. As a bonus, each chapter comes with a handmade doodle. There’s something in it for all ages. The simple language, non-preachy writing style, and practical steps are sure to appeal to non-readers as well.
This book is dedicated to my mom, who I lost in June of 2019, and is a testament of how I bounced back after the loss to share my learnings with the world. I took around 2 months to rewrite the entire book with a fresh perspective after the loss. My sole purpose is to help my readers find happiness.

Featured Author Brianna Stark

Featured Interview With Brianna Stark

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Brianna Stark. I write romance with an edge. I spend half the year island living in the Pacific Northwest where I do a lot of writing and devouring books. I take a boat to get my groceries, practice yoga, and am learning to play the ukulele. My dog is a three-pound Pomchi and we go everywhere together. I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was a teenager I wrote poetry. I had a career as a contemporary dancer before I wrote my first novel in my early thirties.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
When I started the Driven Dance Theater series I didn’t read a lot, especially while writing. Now, I keep up with the top books in the new adult, romance, and sports romance genres. I read a lot and everything I read influences me. I love Elin Hilderbrand’s writing style even though it is very different than what I write. My favorite genre is contemporary romance. I also love non-fiction books.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called LIGHTS UP: A Driven Dance Theater Novella. It’s an introduction to the Driven Dance Theater series. LIGHTS UP is about a young dancer struggling with stage fright in New York City. She resists falling for her best friend’s crush, a celebrity chef, when he helps her overcome her fears.
I used to be a professional dancer and I wanted to write something to bring people inside of that world. I also wanted it to be entertaining, so I decided to make it a romance series. I love the tension and emotion the romance genre allows. My idea was also to write something slightly more edgy and fashionable than the typical romance, because it is something I would like to read.

Featured Author J.R. Schuyler

Author J.R. SchuylerFeatured Interview With J.R. Schuyler

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is J.R. Schuyler and I’m a spec-fic author in my mid-twenties. I was born and raised in New Zealand and still live there to this day. It’s a beautiful country and I’ve been fortunate enough to see most of it, thanks to my frequent travels. I haven’t visited Hobbiton yet or been on a LOTR tour, but I have ridden some of the horses that were used in the movies.

I’m a huge animal lover, but I don’t currently have any pets. In the past, I’ve owned a cat, two rabbits, and many, many fish. Rabbits are by far my favorite animal, but their vet bills can be insanely expensive. Nevertheless, I’m hoping to adopt another pair soon!

Outside of writing, I enjoy playing guitar and creating my own music. I also read a lot, and I’m pretty good at Scrabble (my best score so far is 500 points). Lately, I’ve been thinking about taking up scuba diving too.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always been interested in books and storytelling. Even when I was too young to read independently, I used to flip through the pages and pretend I understood the words. I started “writing” my own picture books when I was around three. They were just scribble drawings at first (a purple scribble to represent Barney the Dinosaur; a yellow scribble to represent the sun, etc). I was about five or six when my vocabulary and motor skills were good enough to write stories for fun. I must have started close to a thousand stories over the years, but I only finished three of them.

In my early teens, I made the mistake of submitting one of my stories to a major publisher. My writing ability at the time was… not great. I never edited my work and just assumed the manuscript would be fine as-is. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. Months later, I got a rejection letter, and it completely killed my desire to write.

I quit writing after that experience and then restarted in my early twenties. One of my friends was writing a book, and their enthusiasm inspired me to give it another shot. I submitted a few stories and articles to various websites, and to my surprise, they got published. My friends encouraged me to keep going and write a real book, so I did. Then I wrote another. And another. I still get plenty of rejections, but they don’t bother me anymore. It’s just a normal part of being a writer.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genres are fantasy and sci-fi, but I’ll read pretty much anything. Horror is probably my most-read genre, which is odd because I don’t actually enjoy being scared! I think I read it so much because it helps me with my craft as a writer. The best horror authors are able to evoke specific feelings in the reader (usually fear or disgust). Applying their techniques to different emotions helps me to create a more engaging and meaningful experience for my readers.

As far as novels go, my favorite horror authors are Jeremy Bates, Ambrose Ibsen, and Darcy Coates. I also enjoy some Stephen King from time to time. My favorite fantasy author would have to be J.K. Rowling. The world-building in Harry Potter is phenomenal. In fact, it’s one of the only series I’ve read where I didn’t want it to end. My favorite sci-fi authors are Ray Bradbury and Andy Weir.

Although I read a lot, the inspiration for my work usually doesn’t come from novels. My first book was inspired by a neuroscience textbook. My second was inspired by a mewithoutYou song that was based on a bizarre true story. I have no idea what inspired my latest book. In the past, I’ve also been inspired by dreams, misread tweets, and documentaries. I think that just goes to show that you can find inspiration anywhere.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“The Gloaming” is a portal fantasy novel that follows a boy and his secret wraith friends from the ages of ten to seventeen as they fight monsters, try to outwit evil scientists, and deal with small-town prejudice. The writing style is a bit more complex than the average YA novel, but confident readers 13 and up shouldn’t have any trouble with it.

The idea for the book came to me one night while I was trying to sleep. I sat bolt upright like I’d been electrocuted and immediately started writing the outline. Six hours later, all the elements of the story were in place. You’d think I’d be tired after staying up all night, but I wasn’t. I felt excited and invigorated and ready to write the real thing. I finished the first draft in three weeks and then edited it over the next two years, while also working short-term contracts and writing other stories/novels.

My favorite part of “The Gloaming” is the characters.

Billy is a very anxious boy with intelligence beyond his years. He still has gaps in his knowledge and lacks impulse control, but his maturity enables him to come up with creative solutions to the problems he faces. Billy is also loyal to a fault and has a strong desire to do the right thing.

Corvus is a wraith, and like the other wraith kids, he’s not well-liked by Morton’s human population. Unfortunately, most of his own kind shun him too. There’s an angsty aggressiveness to him from the start, which isn’t unusual when you consider he’s been beaten down by the world from an early age. Despite his rudeness, he’s one of my favorite characters.

Rem is in the same situation as Corvus—shunned by both wraiths and humans. She starts out a lot more like Billy—fearful and trying to hide it. She doesn’t have much fight in her, but once she realizes she has people on her side, she gains a lot of confidence. If I ever got caught in a tough spot, she’s the character I would want on my side. Just wait ‘til you see her with a sword!

Featured Author Chris Hepler

Featured Interview With Chris Hepler

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.. Though I’ve lived in Maryland, Alberta, and both Southern and Northern California, I still like to write about the D.C. area. The urban fantasy field is so crowded with stories of either small towns or big cities that D.C. stands out in my mind. Its stories can be of grand scope, contrasting our world of 24-hour news cycles with the fantastical, or personal loyalties with obligations to the nation or even the world.

I currently live on the West Coast with my wife, two loud children, one loud cat, and a very quiet corn snake. I try to stay in shape by doing various martial arts, which sometimes show up in my writing.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I never thought I was born into writing, but in retrospect, it’s pretty close. My parents tell me I started reading at age three with a book called “Dinosaur Time” and read the novelization of Star Wars (A New Hope) at five. Granted, I doubt I understood the parts I hadn’t seen in the movie, but that’s when they realized I was sounding stuff out on my own. Only when I had kids did I realize those developmental milestones are pretty unusual.

I wrote a play about the Trojan War in fifth grade; by sixteen I was writing up background stories for my table-top roleplaying game characters. I think I knew I was a writer when everyone in class was groaning about being ordered to write a 10-page short story and I realized I’d written 25 over the weekend just for fun. A friend of mine said she’d also done that, and I felt a little more normal… except mine was single-spaced and hers wasn’t. (She went on to become an awesome environmental scientist, and writes very well, by the way.)

In college, I met my wife Jennifer, who was also majoring in creative writing, and we knew that we needed to develop a career ASAP or we’d both be starving artists. So we sent in samples to tabletop roleplaying game companies, had a bit of success, and then figured out we’d better aim our sights at an industry that paid a living wage. That led us to screenwriting, our first television job, and a lot of unpublished screenplays. But we leveraged our experience into a video game company called Bioware, and I’ve been writing in electronic games ever since… with the occasional foray into novels and comics.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
If you look at sheer shelf space, the novelists I’ve read the most are Stephen King and Nancy Kress. Their approaches to writing are, as far as I can tell, complete opposites. King often goes by the seat of his pants and is dedicated to provoking emotion, where Kress researches and plans. But of course, I don’t get inspired just by novelists; I also enjoy Neil Gaiman and Eric Shanower’s comics, David Simon’s work on TV’s The Wire, and, of course, I appreciate the current deluge of fantasy, sci-fi, and comic book movies as well as the next nerd. Since I work in video games, I’ll also include old favorites like Knights of the Old Republic, City of Heroes now that it’s got dialogue choices, and the Xbox version of The Bard’s Tale, which was a great send-up of its genre.

Of course, a fair bit of my inspiration credit must go to my wife, Jennifer Hepler, who is a writer in her own right. My writing journey didn’t begin with her, but she’s shaped it for some 25+ years now. She shoots down a lot of my worst ideas and impulses, and I think that’s helped my final products immensely.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Civil Blood” is subtitled “The Vampire Rights Case that Changed a Nation” because it’s an urban fantasy/legal thriller mashup centering around a trial that reaches the Supreme Court of the United States.

On one side of the class-action lawsuit are humans infected by a supernatural virus that turns them into highly infectious blood-drinkers. On the other is the Benjamin Rush Health Institute, whom the vampires see as the source of the viral outbreak due to medical negligence. BRHI, trying to avoid bankruptcy, claims that the vampires are no longer human and therefore no longer have any Constitutional rights. The public is divided: a virus cannot take away your humanity, but nor is it tenable to allow an epidemic of predators.

The battle is not limited to the courtroom. BRHI’s small team of deniable assassins has been covering up the vampires’ existence, but one of them, Infinity DeStard, can’t stomach the killings any more. Shaken by her own infection in the line of duty, she can’t reveal the truth or she’ll be dead. The question of the novel is, how long can she lie to them… and herself?

Oh, because there are several books titled “Civil Blood,” be sure to search for it with the subtitle or my name. (That’s what I get for taking a title from a public-domain phrase of Shakespeare’s.)

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I lived in a remote village in Austria, my first efforts were pretty terrible

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love the work of Rupert Thompson, who I met when I was at Art School
I love dark stories. I also can get into a biography about an interesting person

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Adventures of Death, Reincarnation and Annihilation
What if the human race was considered irrelevant and then each being was just uploaded then locked away on hard drives called “brain pods” ?

What if a sub species was to come into fruition, then the human race turned on it, hunted it down before trying to annihilate it? Imagine you found out you were an ancient soul, who is reunited with another being from your former life?

Set in different time in a variety of settings and time periods, the past, the present and the future, the book explores the inevitable unknown that lies before us all “death”. Death can be arrive in a multitude of forms. Each part of the book explores different themes. There are characters who following their demises have to face up to their lurid pasts. There some who face annihilation and others who are in a crazy pursuit of world destruction. We are living in an age in which it appears that the doomsday clock is ticking ever faster, as we teeter over the edge of world destruction. The book aims to contain some ironic twists. Even as young children we build up nightmare visions of what death involves. The reader is often left to distinguish between what is real and what is not, as stories reside within stories and the story tellers can never be fully trusted. Not all the book is doom and gloom, there are Elsa Grun’s bizarre encounters with men and Shellys’ hapless husband Arnie.

From secluded beach houses, to obscure motels, to visions of heaven, which takes the form of the Hotel Paradiso, to the world of the future death is always a wild adventure, that can’t be ignored.

Featured Interview With Srijit Mondal

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hey folks, I am Srijit Mondal.
Speaking about myself , I’m a 20 year old from Kolkata, West Bengal born and brought up there. Other than my writing career, I pursue a bachelor’s degree in Statistics from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. An IYMC pre-finalist and scholar, mathematics, literature, data and the human mind amuse me and leave me in awe. My books have won me wide acclaims including nomination in “Top 100 Innovators in Education”, an esteemed award presented by the GFEL in 2019. Recently I’ve got a nomination for “Author of the Year 2019” from Ne8X Litfest and “Best Debut Author” from Star India Awards 2019.
I have published four books till now, three mathematics books and a book of Bengali poems.
I have a poetry book (this time in English) coming up, a collection of around 100 poems on varied topics. It’ll be out in a month or two. I wish to go for a crime fiction and a book on Life Lessons.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have been a hardcore booklover since my childhood gobbling anything from comics, fantasies, literary pieces and the craving has just increased with age. Writers and what went inside their mind always fascinated me but I never thought I’ll be one.
I remember writing my first poem when I was 16…too late may be but better late than never…haha.
First idea of mathematics book came just from the love for the subject and the poetry book is a collection of what me and my co-authors have written over the past few years
, I never plan and write. I generally write when I’m idling may be…suddenly some thoughts come and I jot it down .
Even for mathematical things, it’s like I’m solving a problem and I find it great and useful…I take a note, some shortcut or some useful formulae…it’s just that way. Later on I find a place to add it in the draft.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Well, its hard to pin point some particular authors or books which have influenced me…there are a lot of them.
Yet some special Mathematics books are there like “Finite dimensional Vector spaces ” by P R Halmos, Mathematical Circles, Arthur Engel’s “Problem Solving Strategies ” and a lot others.
In literature, books by Nicholas Sparks, Dan Brown and a lot others don’t fail to amuse.
A voracious reader…I’m gobbling up a lot of books presently…there’s The ABC Murders, The Fault in our Stars, Inside Chanakya’s Mind, Kargil: The Untold Story and a lot of others.
I’m three-fourth way through and will be finishing up soon.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The latest book, “Uro Bhabnar Jonmostup”, is an outcome of the experiences of life faced by young minds. As the title suggests, the book is a collection of poems and a few short stories curling up from random thoughts on almost anything and everything – social dogmas, love and emotions, friendship, intellectualism and many more. The book has got positive criticisms from writers and intellectuals and has been an Amazon India “Hot New Release” selling more than 100 copies in a month of its release.

Featured Interview With Chandra Lahiri

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Chandra Lahiri is an “Indian from India” who lives in the Sultanate of Oman. After many years as a global CEO, he now focuses on his lifelong passion for Native American heritage. His wife is a Special Needs Educator in Oman, and his two sons live in the USA. He loves hearing from like-minded readers, at www.dawnvoyager.com

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading voraciously when I was in Junior School – ending up having to get eye glasses! I started writing freelance articles while in College, but never dreamt of writing a full-length book till this odyssey inspired me beyond resisting!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love history, historical fiction and detective stories, though I will read pretty much anything. Dee Brown’s “Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee” probably had the most profound influence on me. But then, I also love stories about animals!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
A life-changing solo voyage of discovery across the blood-soaked Great Plains. An odyssey to momentous sites of Native American heritage. Meet the amazing “invisible warriors” fighting impossible odds to reclaim their heritage and share in the American Dream without losing their unique identity, much as their ancestors fought on the battlefields to save their way of life.
Nurturing a half-century obsession, I take the reader along on my astonishing solo road-trip through haunting places of intense tragedy and stunning triumphs, through Native American spiritual experiences that shook the atheist in me, plunging into the rough and tumble worlds that were Deadwood and Dodge City, chuckling gently over modern American idiosyncrasies. Neither a “white historian” nor a “red commentator,” I visit both sides of the Native American experience to discover exciting sparks of a brighter, more hopeful future – an unusual and enthralling odyssey effortlessly plaiting space and time.
