Featured Interview With Jonathan Myers

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am Jonathan Myers independent author of The Unfinished Book Series. I was raised in a small town in Upstate NY called Duanesburg. I have always made my own path. I was kicked out of the house when I was sixteen years old. I have lived on my own ever since. I enlisted in the US Army in 1991. When I was Honorably Discharged I went to school to become a truck driver. In 2001 I married my beloved Diana. We settled down in a small town in Upstate NY called Schodack. We have lived there since 2002. Schodack is close to Albany NY that is a farming community. Diana and i have three small dogs and a cat. Two of the dogs we rescued and the other one was given to us. Our cat we rescued when it was left to survive on its own. Diana and i both work full time at our jobs. We live a simple life and always find away to spend as much time as we can with each other. Diana is by biggest fan when it comes to what I do. Especially when it come to my books. Matter of fact she is one of my characters in my books.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was 13 years old I was given an extra credit project in English. So I wrote a short story about a little boy and his dog. I got a B+ on it. Which pulled my grade up enough to pass English. In the process I discovered that I love to write. When I was 19 years old. I sent that short story to Random House. They sent it back to me with a letter which said. Please fix these errors. Then type the manuscript. Please send it back when your done. We do not accept hand written manuscripts. I took it as a rejection letter so I put the manuscript away. Years later I found out that it was not a rejection letter. Random House must thought it was good. They don’t send manuscripts back. They throw them away when they don’t like it. In the process of life and moving around I have lost that manuscript. My love for books came at an early age since we had no TV. We had a large library in out house so I read a lot.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading the Bible. I love Tom Clancy books. One of my favorite books is a Tom Clancy book. The Hunt for Red October. C,S. Lewis and Jack London has inspired me the most I think when it come to me writing. Stephen King I look up to as one of the most successful authors in the world. I love to read true stories. I like The Boy Called It. That story gets me every time I read it. I do like Walter Farley Books also. The human spirit is amazing when it come to survival. Like the book Crow Killer. That is the true story of Jerimiah Johnston. What he went trough was simply amazing to survive in the Rocky Mountains. Avenging his wife’s death against the Crow Indians. The chief of the Crow Indians and Johnston became good friends after their little war. Like I said the human spirit is amazing.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book The Unfinished volume 2 The Finishing. It is about the glue that hold a family together. A serial killer targets Dean Jacobs on a personal level. Dean is left with no other option then to embrace his altar ego The Chemist. Dean is in the fight for his life in this book. He does the unthinkable to take care of this attack on his existence. He brings the past into the future.
Writing this book took me about 7 months to write. It took 3 months for all the proof reading and editing. I loved writing this book. I hope I brought all the characters into a relatable sense. Dean is a Cold War assassin that wants be retired. He is brought to the point that he has to get involved in this case with his adopted family. Mariska being in the USA for less than a year. She decides to give back to the country that took her in and gave her freedom. She does this by working for the FBI. Dean is beside himself with her choice but he also knows he has to support her decision. Diana and Dean start their relationship in this book. Diana loves Dean and she supports his decisions in getting involved. There are new characters in this book also. There is Clifton Casella and Larry White. There is also Mariska love interest Gilbert Sintas. I hope I leave everyone with wanting more in this book. you can see all the character bios in detail on my blog.

Featured Interview With Morigan Shaw

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in West Virginia, although I’ve lived a few other places, it’s West Virginia I call home now with my son and cats.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Oh gosh, I was around 6 years old, maybe 7 when my love of books – and my desire to be a writer – started. In fact, I still have my original 1970’s printing of E.B. White’s, Trumpet of the Swan, the book that started it all. Then once I started reading Stephen King (a little older of course!), I knew that was what I wanted to “be when I grew up”.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
This is always a tough question – I love all the books I’ve read, even the really bad ones lol, because I’ve learned something from each and every one of them, both fiction and nonfiction.

My favorite genre to read is probably fantasy, followed by horror, and historical romance. But I always have some nonfiction work that I’m reading too.

My writing is inspired by life – sounds cliche I know, but it’s true. I have loved fantasy stories for as long as I can remember, and my son and I are both huge MMORPG fans. Writing in the fantasy genre was just a given I think!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Edelaine’s Folly: Book One of the Idoramin Chronicles is a story about a young woman who finds herself thrust into a destiny she doesn’t want, a family legacy she never knew, and forced to trust in an unknown strength she doesn’t understand. I wanted to start diving deeply into character development and bring readers into this world, with these characters. While readers may find some of the traditional fantasy genre tropes here, there are a few twists and turns along the way.

I was born and raised in West Virginia. I’ve lived a few other places, but call West Virginia home now with my son and cats.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was about 6 or 7 I think. In fact, I still have my tattered, dog-eared copy of the 1970’s printing of E.B. White’s, Trumpet of the Swan. After reading that book is when I first had the notion of becoming a writer. I’ve written stories all my life, but only recently started sharing them with the world.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre to read is probably fantasy, followed by horror, historical romance, and nonfiction. Really, I love all the books in all the genre’s I’ve read – I’ve learned something from every single one, whether I liked the book or not! 🙂

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Edelaine’s Folly: Book One of the Idoramin Chronicles is the story of a young woman who is thrust into a destiny she doesn’t want, a family legacy she never knew, and forced to trust in an unknown strength she doesn’t understand. While some of the familiar fantasy tropes are here, readers will find some twists and turns along the way. I wanted to dive deeply into the characters and the world and really invite readers to feel part of the world and the events that happen.

Featured Interview With Martin Connolly

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am from Ireland. Despite being born in Liverpool, England and living there for five years, mind. Grew up, mostly then, in Belfast. Now resident in Japan, been here over a quarter of a century. No pets. But. Married. Two kids. I’m a professor at a university here.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I didn’t take to reading so easily at an early age. But I loved films. So I read film-tie ins. Thereafter, I started growing up and becoming more interested in books for themselves. An early love was the Spanish language poetry of Gabriel Garcia Lorca. I soon started to explore the blank page by myself. The Age of Enlightenment for me was around the age of 12, for reading (properly), and 17, for writing.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
An early inspiring author was, and continues to be, James Joyce. I now research and publish on his works. Argentinian writer Julio Cortazar has also been important. I have drawn much inspiration from Medieval English literature, the Gawain Poet and the author of The Awntyrs Off Arthur’s. also love generic fiction. Ian Fleming’s Bond books. Philip K Dick, but he’s beyond classification. Much good poetry, much of it Irish. A bit of Stephen King and others, too.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My most recently published book is my debut novel, The Conjuring Cowboy. It is classifiable as a comedy, a Western, an adventure, a fantasy, and as a literary experiment. It’s about a recently graduated Irish fellow at the end of the 1980s, and the time traveling adventure he gets drawn into. He becomes a magician. And a cowboy. He is not very serious minded, but he discovers that the world is not quite as frivolous as he. And yet, does he really learn anything?

Featured Author Jim Cronin

Featured Interview With Jim Cronin

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My story began in Kansas City, Missouri where I was born, but soon journeyed to Arlington, Virginia where we lived until I was about twelve years old. At that time, my family moved to Denver, Colorado where we have been ever since.
I attended Colorado State University, where I majored in Zoology and received a Masters in science education. I also met and fell in love with the woman of my dreams and married her soon after we graduated. We raised two wonderful sons who are now grown and have children of their own. As required in the grandparenting handbook, we spoil the grandkids rotten every chance we get.
I retired a few years ago after spending thirty-five years as a science teacher, mostly at the middle school level. Now I work part-time at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science as Educator/Performer. This means I get to become an astronaut on Mars and talk to visitors about what it’s like to be on Mars, or I am a pirate bacteriologist, or drop water balloons on visitors to demonstrate Galileo’s experiment at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. All the fun of teaching, without the papers to grade!
Somewhere in all of this I found the time to write a science fiction trilogy, The Brin Archives. This proved to be an exciting new challenge for me and, now that the trilogy is completed, I have ideas for several more novels and short stories to write in the near future.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved reading, even as a child. Unfortunately, I had to put aside reading for fun during my school years, but as soon as I got away from text books, I returned to the world of real novels. I love almost any genre, except maybe romance, but science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction are my favorites.
I began to write after I retired from my teaching career. It was actually a dare from my brother who was writing a book of his own. It turned into an exciting adventure and I fell in love with the challenges of not only writing a novel, but the editing and reworking the story to make it something worthy of publishing.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading the classic scifi authors, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke,Robert Heinlein, as well as Orson Scott Card, Greg Bear, and others.
These authors have inspired much of my writing in that they often tackle current social issues and bring awareness to the issue by turning it into a crisis among aliens, the distant future, or some other science fiction context. I love this about scifi. Readers can often tolerate the fictionalization of our social issues when reading a more realistic account is too much to handle.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Empyrean is the conclusion to The Brin Archives trilogy. In this story, we pick up where Recusant, book two, left off. We learn that the Skae, the alien beings who saved the Brin from extinction back in Hegira, book one, are not who they have portrayed themselves to be. The offspring of a Brin and Kolandi coupling, known as Kolbri, have a unique ability to telepathically connect with any technology. This is the result of a genetic alteration caused by the biocomuter implanted in several of the Rockers in previous books. The Kolbri also can connect to, and control travel along cosmic strings not only through space, but through time.
A small group of Kolbri, and must travel back in time to discover the origin of the interstellar war between the Skae and their enemy, the Gorvin. The Skae claim the Gorvin want to prevent them from developing a massive energy source which would provide free energy to all. But the Gorvin fear the project is fatally flawed and will destroy have the galaxy. Who can the Brin believe? Must they turn against their old friends? Only travel to the distant past can uncover the secrets and lead to the truth.

Featured Interview With S. Wills

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am 25 years old and currently an Office Manage for a Health and Life Insurance Agency. My goal is to return to college and get my Bachelor’s in Creative Writing which is my passion in life. I wish to create stories that are realistic even though the overall topic is fictional i.e. paranormal romances.
I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland but went to college in Frostburg, Maryland then Towson University, in Towson, Maryland. However, I am still living in Baltimore, Maryland with a husband and stepson, who just turned 8 years old.
I married my highschool sweetheart in 2015 and have been happily married ever since. He has been my constant supporter throughout this journey of self-publishing .

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always had a fascination for reading ever since I was 10 years old. I would read anything that wasn’t put away such as my mother’s mail, the newspaper, back of cereal boxes, etc. But my obsession with paranormal romances began in high school. I remember reading romance novels by Brenda Jackson or Rochelle Alers but one day, I picked up a novel by J.R Ward and I was hooked ever since. The Black Dagger Brotherhood and other similar novels became the world I ventured into to escape my mundane existence. Since high school and on to college, I continued to read and collect books like this as well as general romance novels until I had over 200 books at my perusal.

I began writing my own novel my second year of college. I remember finishing the latest novel by Gena Showalter and couldn’t shake the ideas that were swirling in my mind for my own story. I knew I wanted to write something that was realistic and gave a different ending than what I usually read. I started writing a little every day, here and there until I finally had something that was worth exploring and becoming more.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors are J.R Ward, Gena Showalter, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Brenda Jackson and many more.
These authors know exactly how to bring a story to life. They know exactly how to capture the audience attention via details, character interaction and overall narrative.
My favorite genre is romance in general because I love to read about the journey people go through to find and keep a profound love. It gives me hope and makes my spirit smile when I read and finish novels like this.
I am inspired by my favorite authors daily. I always go back and read the novels I have by them and watch their interviews to see how they started and got to where they are today and it makes me want to pursue my dream even more to become a best selling author.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My book is about a vampire who finds his soul mate after searching for her for centuries. The connection between them is instant, primal, and explosive! However, right after finding each other their love is threatened by a sadistic, master vampire fueled by vengeance for his lost love. As the story unfolds, readers will find themselves on the edge of their seat wondering if love will prevail or if the darkness engulfs them all.

Featured Interview With Laura C. Cantu

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I live on the cutting edge of reality, hopping between the realms and bringing back stories that usher readers into lands filled with possibilities and wonder. My life is full of magic. It doesn’t matter where I go or who I am with, I am witness to the extraordinary.
Living in Las Vegas brings a bit of excitement to life as well. Located close to Los Angeles, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and a beautiful desert landscape, Las Vegas is among the best cities I’ve ever lived in—and that’s saying a lot.
Growing up, my family and I moved from city to city, year after year. It was difficult at times, but also refreshing. I had opportunities to meet new people, redefine myself, and explore differing landscapes quite often. Each time we moved, it was like starting over again. I created a brand new “ME.”
I’ve taken many of my experiences and infused them into my writing, which gives me a vast universe of cultures, experiences, and belief systems to work with. Now, in my forties, I can finally see how my puzzle pieces of life fit together and encourage me to weave fictional truths into tapestries of written words.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always had a passion for stories, but I didn’t realize that I wanted to be a writer until I was well into other careers. At the time, I was a professional Argentine Tango and Swing dancer. I was also driving six hours each week to attend Kansas College of Chinese Medicine where I was working toward my Master of Science degree in Oriental Medicine.
It was during those long drives that I began listening to audiobooks. I became so enthralled with books such as The Time Traveler’s Wife, Harry Potter, Eragon, and more, that I couldn’t help but to create my own stories in my imagination. It was then that the seeds were planted.
Eventually, those seeds grew into fully fledged desires and I had no choice but to allow them to grow. I didn’t become an author because I wanted to. I became an author because I needed to.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors include, but are not limited to, the following:
J. K. Rowling
Piers Anthony
Christopher Paolini
Charlaine Harris
Christine Contini
Neville Goddard
and more.

My favorite genre to read is fantasy. I like fantastical stories that swoop me away into rich and vibrant worlds full of magic.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Betwixters – Once Upon A Time is a middle-grade novel about three twelve-year-old friends who find a lost fairy named Neevya in a forbidden forest. Of course, before they met Neevya, they didn’t believe in fairies, but what they didn’t know is that Neevya didn’t believe in humans either.
This is the first book in a series of seven, and it introduces the reader to a vast universe where magic fills the air and adventure waits around every corner. With a rich backstory yet to come, Betwixters Once Upon A Time opens the doors of imagination and makes you question what’s actually possible.

It took three years to write this first book in the series. Building the world was a huge undertaking, and plotting out what happens throughout the entire series has been fun, but also tedious and difficult. There are sister series that intermingle with this one, and by the end, Betwixters will be not just a single story, but an empire.

Featured Interview With J J Sorel

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in Melbourne, Australia. Presently I live in Torquay, a gorgeous beach location at the beginning of the fabulous Great Ocean Road. I have a dog call Byron(named after the celebrated poet – Lord Byron)

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My first books were at the age of 4. I have never stopped reading. From “John and Betty” all the way to “50 shades of Grey” I must have read thousands of books. The thought of not having a book to read causes me anxiety. One time in Spain, many years ago, before ebooks existed, after having finished all the books I could carry in my luggage, I became distressed at not having a book to read. I introduced myself to every english speaker I encountered in order to find out how I could get my hands on an english book. One kindly directed me to Cortes Ingles, a large shop filled with everything. I stumbled upon a collection by Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen. Oh my, did I sigh with relief as I carried those heavy books home to my hotel. I started writing fiction in 2007.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Emily and Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot, Balzac, Flaubert, Somerset Maugham, Georgette Heyer, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and tons more. I’m inspired by numerous writers. I have recently taken to reading contemporary romance (E L James, Sylvia Day, Sophie Jackson etc.) Their books are sexy in a way that readers never encountered in the past. I have to say they’ve inspired me to write in an honest, open way. Now, it’s all about choreographing the love scenes and finding new ways of describing sex, all the way to a ceiling hitting, breathless climax. Curling toes, ripping sheets, brewing hot waves, etc etc. It’s all raw and visceral, even poetic at times. Love it. Love reading it, love writing it.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
It took me six months to write the first draft of Entrance. Once I’d created Aidan Thornhill I was addicted. I fell in love with him and Clarissa, their story, so much that I was compelled to write every day without fail. I recall crying when I finished it. Not because I was glad to have it done, but because I was going to miss them. I know that sounds weird. And no, I’m not losing my mind. During their highs and lows, I cried and laughed with them. When I visualized Aidan I saw that dishy actor, Henry Cavill. After that, it was easy to make him as steamy as they come. Here’s a little about it. Being in promoting mode as I must, lamentably, be all the time, I have included some recent reviewers’ comments about my little book.

Clarissa Moone is a young, classy, impoverished art history graduate. Her life transforms when she lands a job working for the enigmatic billionaire, Aidan Thornhill. As the contract stipulates that she reside at his lavish Malibu estate, Clarissa suddenly finds herself surrounded by jaw-dropping art and opulence. A significant step up from the run-down apartment she shares with her best friend.
Aidan Thornhill is a self-made billionaire whose earlier start in life was riddled with poverty and a dysfunctional upbringing. Running away from scandal, he joins the army and works his way up to the Special Forces. Accompanied by haunting memories, Thornhill re-enters civilian life with a million dollars gifted to him by a dying buddy. He travels to Europe where he develops a passion for art. And after many astute investments, he becomes one of LA’s wealthiest bachelors.
Voluptuous, intelligent and sensitive, Clarissa Moone’s beauty makes Aidan gasp for air. But with a reputation that is as much invented as true, he has to convince Clarissa that he is not a heart-breaker. Aidan Thornhill’s movie-star looks, love of art and passionate support for the downtrodden, soon wins Clarissa’s heart, soul, and innocence.
After living a life devoted to intellectual pursuits and art, being new to love, she succumbs to her smoldering hot boss, who stops at nothing to pleasure her, sending Clarissa off into toe-curling ecstasy.
Behind the scenes, however, the claws are out. Determined to stir trouble, three characters, one of whom, a spoilt heiress, do everything to reap revenge.
With mutual burning passion impossible to extinguish, the couple’s chemistry is so potent that their souls implode when Thornhill’s mysterious past threatens to drive a wedge between them. The former soldier goes into battle determined to have Clarissa even if it means losing everything.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and grew up in Kansas eventually moving to Colorado and Nebraska before landing closer to home in Oklahoma. I now live on the shores of Grand Lake of the Cherokee with my husband Bob and our fur child Callie. We enjoy a quiet life with beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

I have written four books. The first, Creating a Successful Craft Business inspired by my personal experience in the craft business, was traditionally published by Allworth Press/Skyhorse Publishing in 2003. The last three, Frozen Fun! 25 Dairy and Dairy Free Ice Cream Recipes, Have Yourself a Healthy Little Holiday and The Gluten Free Good Life are self published as Amazon Kindle e-books.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have been fascinated with books since I learned to read. From my first poem being published in my grade school newspaper in the first grade I knew I would someday publish more. I just didn’t know what, when or how. I wrote poetry as a teenager and young adult. Later I assumed I would go to graduate school and at least publish a dissertation. But it wasn’t until in my 30’s while trying to establish myself as an artist and learn the basics of starting a business that the idea that became my first book, Creating a Successful Craft Fiction was born. That book was published by 2003 . My later books about food and special diets have been self published as Kindle e-books.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I read mostly non-fiction on a wide range of topics as I have varied interests. Current reading is mostly inspirational/positive thinking from a wide variety of authors both in print and online. I also enjoy good poetry including the work of Kalhil Gibran and Mary Oliver.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My most recent book The Gluten Free Good Life was inspired by my own experience living Gluten Free. In all of life our attitude matters, but it is especially important when dealing with lifestyle changes and health issues. Making drastic lifestyle changes can be difficult, but focusing on the positive and what is still available, in this case wonderful healthy, naturally gluten free foods rather than what is lost makes a world of difference. In the Gluten Free Good Life I share my experience as I grew into the gluten free way of life since beginning over ten years ago. Of course there are recipes as well. When I began cooking gluten free I didn’t think I would ever enjoy cooking again. The good news is after getting the hang of it I still love cooking and my friends and family still love eating what I make for them.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in March, 1951 in Lynwood, California, and raised in South Gate and Norwalk, before my family moved to Concord, California. I presently live on a farm on the island of Maui. We don’t any pets, but the farm is home to several feral cats and chickens, along with an occasional mongoose. Numerous birds also make their home on the farm, including egrets, mynas and finches. I’ve been married to my wife, Rene, since 1977. We have two grown boys, both living on the US mainland.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I began writing for fun at age thirteen, and by age fourteen I had finished writing two books, a science fiction and a western. Thankfully, both have been lost to the ravages of time (I threw them away during a move.)

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
A read across a wide range of fiction genres and history books. As a young teen I fell in love with the westerns of Zane Grey and Max Brand. Robert Heinlein introduced me to great science fiction and Isaac Asimov added to the addiction. I enjoy the mysteries of Sue Grafton and MC Beaton. Jayne Ann Krentz and Pamela Morisi sold me on romance. But I keep coming back to history and anthropology books.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Howard the Red is the third installment in my Surviving the Fog series. It is about forty-eight teenagers who are trapped at a youth camp by a mysterious brown fog that covers the Earth below them. It is a post-apocalypse book focusing on survival, but it harks back to Verne’s Mysterious Island, The Swiss Family Robinson by Wyss, and Heinlein’s Tunnel in the Sky. The first book was Surviving the Fog, and the second book was Kathy’s Recollection’s. There are two more books in the works: Douglas Lives and Sasha the Scarred. Surviving the Fog continues to be my most popular book, Kathy’s Recollections is my longest book, and Howard the Red took more than two years to write.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Originally from central Kentucky, I spent 20 years as a newspaper editor in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky before settling in North Carolina where I have worked as a fiction writer full time for the last decade. Yes, as can be expected, I read and write a lot, but I also enjoy longswording, mountain biking, antiquing (stop shuddering), and plenty of other hobbies and pastimes. Pets? Sure. I’ve got a house rabbit named Fuzzbucket, and there’s a cat who keeps showing up at my back porch every morning because I feed her.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I can never recall a period in which I did not love reading. Even in my earliest years, I was reading comic books and kids’ books. I think the first novel I ever read was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, and I probably would have been about 7 years old at that point. I started writing short fiction in college when I was 19; my astronomy class had a paper due and the professor said we could write a short story, something I’d been meaning to do for some time, so I used that as a push to write my first short story. I began my first novel a few years later, wrote about a third of it, then set it aside thinking I would return to it eventually; eventually came 23 years later, though it was not the first novel I finished, which was my first Kron Darkbow novel, City of Rogues.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Favorite authors? Hmm, Stephen King, Alexandre Dumas, Steve Goble, Steven Erikson, Robert E. Howard, Fred Saberhagen, Ed McBain, Louisa May Alcott … I could go on. My favorite genres are fantasy and horror, though I’ll read just about anything and have a particular fondness for the police procedural novels of Ed McBain. As for who inspires me, this might sound cliched, but everyone. Really, I’m inspired by different people from different walks of life all the time.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My most recent novel, The God Sword, is a fantasy tale that follows a general Kavrik who lays hands upon the famed God Sword of his world. When he does this, he finds himself with a particular brand of immortality. He can die or be killed, but he will be return to life in the body of the next person to touch the sword, though obviously this doesn’t spell anything good for the individual who touched the sword. Kavrik’s path is a road of faith, lost in the world and looking for faith, all while forces work against him while some possibly also provide aid. In the end, without giving anything away, Kavrik has to decide what he is going to believe, especially when any evidence he could base a decision upon is limited. Oh, yeah, and there are some sword fights along the way.

Featured Interview With Warren Chaney

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a screenwriter and film-director and my co-author, Sho Kosugi, was a well-known actor and martial artists. This made our working together on a novel a very natural extension of we were doing in film. Sho was a native of Japan and I had lived there for almost 3 years, so it was easier to incorporate both our cultures into what we were writing. We both wanted to create a fictional work that would show a side of the Japanese culture that might surprise many non-Japanese readers. I love action-adventure and a good love story, so the Yin-Yang Code became an excellent writing vehicle for both of us.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I write to tell a story because I have always loved stories and story tellers. I’ve written novels, screenplays, and short stories which were stories. In my other work, whether it was a textbook, technical article, or a serious study, I’ve always tried to find a storyline in the work and to draft what I was writing around that.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Charles Dickens, Ken Follett, A. S. Byatt, Harper Lee, and Victor Hugo.

My favorite book is Charles Dicken’s, David Copperfield. I have also enjoyed Naipaul’s, A Bend in the River, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, and John’s Grisham’s, The Firm and The Chamber.

I always go to bed at night, thinking about what I will write the following day. In my mind, I develop “film images” of what I hope to see on paper. The following morning after a ritual of twin mugs of strong coffee, I begin the chapter. As with screenwriting, it’s important to me to first get my thoughts and story down on paper. Later, I will return and rewrite and rewrite and rewrite.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The central theme is the “coming of age” of an orphaned Japanese student attending UCLA. He returns to Japan and discovers that home is not always how we leave it and that bad things happen to good people.

There was a considerable amount of research that was required for the novek, Yin-Yang Code: Drums of Tenkai-Bo. Much of it was specific to certain cultures, not all Japanese. For example, there is a martial arts culture, a UCLA culture, an L.A. culture all in addition to the Japanese culture and its counterparts. I spent a great deal of time researching on line as well as by phone and email to some who populated those cultures. Some of the “settings” that are in the book required time to assimilate and affix in my mind. Fortunately, my co-author, Sho Kosugi, and my co-illustrator, Shinobu Ohno, are Japanese and both were always willing to help me.

Aside from the location and cultural settings, there was a need to “get the martial arts” correct for the time, place, and area. Fortunately, Sho Kosugi, expert that he is, knew all there was to know about martial arts. If he didn’t know it, he knew someone who did and if they didn’t know it, it hadn’t been discovered yet and wasn’t to be know.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Growing up in the hills of Tennessee, I backpacked along the Appalachian Trail and canoed nearby rivers. I now live in the foothills of the Arbuckle Mountains, many miles and a climate away. It’s pretty clear I’m more of a mountain than beach person, though I love both. I enjoy taking the dogs (three German Shepherds) along when my husband and I go on vacation. Last year we only had 2 dogs, so this summer looks to be rather interesting.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always been an avid reader. Getting sent to my room as punishment was never a hardship, lol! I could spend hours with just a book for company. My second favorite place to read was sprawled on my sturdy pony’s back, book propped on her wide rump. She never minded.
I’ve always been a story-teller, but put pen to words when I was in high school. There my best friend and I re-wrote such classics as Romeo and Juliet as Julian and Ramona. It gave us a cool way to read and interpret Shakespeare’s story without simply hitting the Cliffnotes. And our classmates enjoyed it, too! Years later I would start writing with an eye to publishing my own works.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading historical fiction. I tend to gravitate to more medieval books, but really enjoy WWI and WWII stories as well. Just recently, my husband introduced me to the urban fantasy genre, and I have to say I’m intrigued. Some of these new-to-me authors include Patricia Briggs, JR Rain, and Faith Hunter. A few of my comfortable favorites are Grace Burrowes, Kathryn le Veque, and Margaret Mallory. I’ve been known to toss back a few romantic suspense and thriller novels, too.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, co-authored with long-time critique partner DD MacRae, is The Highlander’s Crusader Bride. DD has a knack of picking out a period in history that has an intriguing turn of events and suggesting a story based on this. In The Highlander’s Crusader Bride, DD had been studying the Crusades, and wanted to know how a young woman raised in the Holy Land would fare in Scotland. More than clothing and climate differences, we wanted to explore culture, food and religion. How would the Scots perceive her? How would she perceive them? Could we take a dyed-in-the wool Scotsman and entice him to fall in love with a hard-headed woman who’d grown up on adventure and intrigue? What on earth would have to happen before she fell in love with him? And, to tell you the truth, after creating Arbela MacLean and Caelen MacKern, I was a bit unsure either would change their prejudices enough to enjoy their HEA.
But I absolutely love this book. So much, that it took a little over three months to complete this book. That’s a record for us that might never be contested, lol! As Arbela grew emotionally from a confidant (perhaps arrogant) warrior into a woman who was not afraid to give her life to another, Caelen lost his narrow-minded view of women and learned his wife was strong and honorable–and he possibly was unworthy of her.
I’ll leave it to you to read how this happened. I think you’ll enjoy their journey.

Featured Interview With C.J.S. Hayward

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’ve lived in the U.S., Malaysia, France, and England, and have letters after my name from three out of those four. I studied French at the Sorbonne, a mixture of math and computers at UIUC, and a mixture of philosophy and theology at Cambridge, with brief treatment of languages and cultures at the local Institute for Cross-Cultural Training at the end.

Those eclectic interests are part of the picture, but not nearly as central as that I am working to enter Mount Athos in Greece, the Holy Mountain, to enter monastic repentance for the rest of my life. This is along lines I discuss in “A Comparison Between the Mere Monk and the Highest Bishop” at cjshayward.com/monk, which I wrote after failing to track down a North American library able to loan St. John Chrysostom’s comparison between the monk and the Emperor.

As far as pets go, I’m an animal lover, but it’s not responsible to adopt a pet when you’re hoping to leave in a few months. I do however visit one pet shelter to socialize with the pets.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I scarcely remember a time when I was not involved with books.

I wrote numerous megabytes of text in high school that are to my knowledge lost, and I don’t think much was lost. I was slowly working on how to make a point that normal people can understand, and it took me a whole lot of practice to start making progress.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
C.S. Lewis, more than anyone else, formed me as an author. I’ve read almost everything he wrote apart from an academic textbook on 15th to 16th century literature. And really, C.S. Lewis is a terrific starting point even beyond writing well; one piece of advice that’s been given is, if you are going to choose a first author, choose one who will take you places.

There are other authors I’ve liked, including Madeleine l’Engle and more recently the authors collected in the Philokalia, plus St. John Chrysostom (his “last name”, as it were, is a nickname, “Golden-Mouth”). Through C.S. Lewis one imbibes the rhetoric included in the Middle Ages’ seven liberal arts; through St. John Chrysostom one imbibes the classical pagan rhetorical tradition. Both authors have much to share, and much to show about writing well.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My newest book, if you will, is not exactly a book: it is a meta-book or website at https://eBook-Maker.gifts, and creates both Kindle and ePub.

This website, like a product configurator, lets you see which of my works you would like in a book: you can collect categories and topics such as “Short Stories” or “Humor,” or drill down in something like 200 individual offerings. You can also set your collection’s title as you want, an introduction and dedication if you so desire, and a cover image if you have one. This creates more options than the stars in the sky: many times more! And the books are licensed CC0 (“No rights reserved”).

I invite you to visit at https://eBook-Maker.gifts!
