Chasing Rabbits by Rodolfo Del Toro

Chasing Rabbits by Rodolfo Del Toro

Rudy Dell, a fourth-year medical student at the top of his class, is looking forward to a cushy clerkship at an outpatient dermatology clinic. He’s suddenly reassigned to a pediatric oncology department, however, likely because he’s paired with his best friend, Mike Davenport, the son of a billionaire in the medical insurance business roundly hated by doctors everywhere. Rudy is quickly thrust into an emotionally charged environment—all about him are children struggling to survive, flanked by their agonized parents. He befriends Maria, a 9-year-old girl in the final throes of leukemia who has no family and is a ward of the state; sadly, she seems destined to die alone. Rudy has always been a competitive student, one who routinely sees his professional commitments in careerist terms, but now he’s profoundly confronted by the obligations of his chosen vocation. “Up to this moment, everything had been a challenge. He had learned to see patients as tests of his abilities. Rudy saw them not as people, but as problems to be solved, unconsciously rationalizing away the human factor, the empathy.” The author sensitively depicts Rudy’s gathering misgivings about his choice to become a doctor and his first confrontation with genuine self-doubt. The most memorable aspect of this poignant novel, though, is the characterization of children like Maria, facing death with almost preternatural courage, often more worried about their parents than their own fate. This is a sad but hopeful book, one that impressively captures the complexity of children’s lives.
A haunting tale that is both despairing and inspiriting.

RIOT: A 1960s Love Story

About RIOT: A 1960s Love Story:

FREE on Kindle: January 10-14, 2025

A fast-paced journey on an emotional roller coaster, bursting with political and sexual passions.

It’s the late 1960s. The Vietnam War, the Antiwar Movement and the Black Power Movement are rushing toward their explosive peaks. In the midst of this charged environment, an inter-racial pair of young activists fall madly in love. Awaiting them are excitement, danger, heartache and redemption.

RIOT: A 1960s Love Story chronicles these lovers’ challenging journey: their coming of age amidst an unpopular war, a racially polarized city, a hostile mayor and ever-mounting threats, all while working through their own deep psychological issues.

1968 is marked by campus unrest, assassinations and urban rebellions, as well as political violence that thrusts the duo into clashes with Chicago’s police and the National Guard. The suspense builds breathlessly to a heartrending climax during the street protests surrounding that summer’s Democratic National Convention.

Damned Yankees by Ray Deptula

About Featured Book: Damned Yankees by Ray Deptula

99 cents on 01/06/2025
Those who fight their nation’s wars are typically those least able to avoid it.
The world was, is now, and always will be a complicated and volatile place filled with those whose self-interests supersede more noble aspirations.
If history has taught us anything, it is that times may change, but human nature does not.
The competing interests and political tensions of the formation of our country were no more or less dysfunctional than they are today, with the best and worst of individual behavior continually on display.
Jack Halliday wants nothing more than to belong somewhere that provides him with security and values his worth.
In an uncaring world that devours the weak, he is forced to rely on his strongest attribute, his ability and willingness to fight, which ironically belies his benevolent nature.
Much like the fledgling union of the thirteen original colonies, Jack’s rebirth into autonomy constantly teeters on demise in a world where his decisions are all he can control.

DIGITAL ASSASSINS II: Taking the fight to the Judicial Branch of Government by Danielle Spencer

About DIGITAL ASSASSINS II: Taking the fight to the Judicial Branch of Government by Danielle Spencer:

DIGITAL ASSASSINS II follows Danielle Spencer’s attempts to use the judicial system to uphold the rule of law by shining a light on those individuals using federal government resources to digitally assassinate her. Using fictional characters and conversations, this story exposes the alliances made by federal judges, government executives and well-funded special interest groups to protect wrong doers. These alliances were made to ensure that corrupt and unethical people remain in positions of power in America’s premier tax collection agency, ensuring that the tax code is not implemented fairly. Using concepts such sovereign immunity and national security, the government can use tactics such as privacy violations, illegal monitoring and surveillance, misuse of government records, and violation of trusted agreements with third-party institutions without fear of reprisal.

An Ordinary Soldier Tasked With An Extraordinary Mission
Jeep Show chronicles the astonishing journey of Jim Tanzer, a thirty-year-old dance instructor who enlists in the Army in 1943 to fight the Nazis. Jim’s showbiz background lands him in the Morale Corps as an Entertainment Specialist.

Mickey Rooney Leads The Way
Shipped to Europe and tasked with performing in Jeep shows – small variety acts put on for combat infantry just behind the front lines – Jim travels throughout the Combat Zone with squad leader Mickey Rooney, the Hollywood superstar, also in the Morale Corps (as he was in real life).

Their performances, more than just entertainment, are a beacon of hope, bringing brief moments of song, dance, and laughter to weary troops, letting them know they are not forgotten.

Thrown Into A Desperate Fight
Jim’s story becomes intertwined with history when he is caught in the Battle of the Bulge. In Bastogne, he joins Team SNAFU, a makeshift unit supporting the 101st Airborne Division. Jim’s courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds is a testament to the human spirit.

Jeep Show is fiction based on little-known aspects of the U.S. World War II effort seen through the eyes of an unlikely hero. It is a compelling and human story that will appeal to fans of works like Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, and Ken Burns’ The War.

Cell-Jacked: PORTIA BLACK VOLUME 2 by Pascoal Antonio

Cell-Jacked: PORTIA BLACK VOLUME 2 by Pascoal Antonio

The average length of a human genome is approximately six feet. Which, co-incidentally, is the average depth of a human grave.

When Portia Black wakes up, drugged and in a strange apartment, her first instinct is to run. After all she’s not the kind of girl authorities are sympathetic to. It doesn’t help that she’s a professional vigilante, settling scores for other girls like her who have been failed by the system, and it definitely doesn’t help that Nathan Hunter, her kidnapper, is one of the wealthiest bachelors in LA. But this is no date rape. Hunter is missing, the only trace of him is a severed finger in the freezer, and there’s a sutured knot in Portia’s jaw where her wisdom tooth used to be. The average length of a human genome is approximately six feet. Portia should know, she’s buried more than her share of bad guys with six feet of DNA. But when pieces of the girls she’s rescued begin to turn up with her cells on them, Portia realizes she’s been cell-jacked. Now the only hope to retrieve her stolen genetic identity is to rescue the man who attacked her before someone else finds him first. But as the body parts pile up, the questions she’s been afraid to ask start popping up. Is Hunter really the person everyone thinks he is? How are the girls connected to him? And, most importantly, are her girls really dead?

The Mutiny Brides by Barbara Sontheimer

The Mutiny Brides by Barbara Sontheimer

Their Journey was perilous. Their resolve unparalleled.

From France to the frontier of New Orleans …
Their Journey was perilous. Their resolve unparalleled.

In 1719, La Mutine sailed from France in the cold of January to what would later be known as New Orleans. The women on board were unjustly tried and labeled as prostitutes, thieves, and beggars. Among them Héléne, Josianne, Suzanne and Maelle, women who would prove to be of incredibly strong resolve.
After twelve weeks in chains aboard La Mutine, they set foot on the land that was to become their new home. They were met by a wild, untamed wilderness where they endured years of isolation, famine, hurricanes, disease, and ever-changing governmental rule.
These women that France so cavalierly disposed of, not only survived but became successful businesswomen, wealthy landowners, and matriarchs of large, prosperous families.
This is the story of the “Gulf Coasts” long-forgotten founding mothers.

Last-Second Decision by Keith Pemberton

Last-Second Decision by Keith Pemberton

During months of penury from Haiti’s destruction, they selected Inspector Gage Pemberton to join a security team of twenty men. Their primary duty was to give help to the refugees. Pemberton struggles between his leadership role and his love for his wife, and he realizes his arrogance toward the task ahead fools him. The decision to appoint Pemberton should have been taken seriously by the lieutenant. Who felt overlooked and unacknowledged?

Pemberton’s reality began loosening once he steps foot into Haiti. He’s introduced to his faith and the problems that come with it. Surrounded by unexpected fantasies and decisions. The lieutenant is a serpent trying to devour Pemberton’s body. Pemberton kept growing more and more adamant about the safety of his men, struggling with a feeling that he won’t die and refusing to lose hope. Pemberton pondered these words in his heart, “another man’s loss is another man’s gain.” While trying to make the best of the situation, things kept challenging him. I can describe happiness as lost memories being found.

Haitian soldiers fought bravely to capture or kill these men from a misguided prime minister whose primary focus was revenge. Only when James got put down for the actions of Constable Huggins did the men grow stronger together. From there, it was a struggle to go home. They faced obstacle after obstacle—our guys with situations that would break minor men. But, finally, seeing the result was home, and they fought for the chance to return home again. Their home on their lips, they fought to feel such pleasures again. As a result, trust broken, and it made a new form of brotherhood. Will they make it to freedom, or will death be their ultimate decision?

The Demon Rift

About The Demon Rift:

For eons, it observed Earth’s smoldering beginning, then its parade of life and the rise of Man. It entered our dreams, whispering, cajoling, hissing its promises of glory and power. To cause a permanent rift in the barrier that separates our universes, it created a saboteur.

Red pools swirled in the yellow eyes as the boy began to smile, his mouth widening into an impossible grin.

Often moving between timelines, the story covers more than a century, as women fight a demon named Bernie. To serve his demon masters, he murders wherever he goes. As an old man, he is caught and sent to prison which he burns to the ground with almost everyone in it. His demon masters want to create a pathway to our world. To continue his mission, Bernie steals the identity and youth of his young cellmate. In 2004, Bernie is now retired U.S. senator and multimillionaire John Arnold, who has used his wealth and position to push forward a big shopping mall in Redhill, Ohio. The mall stands on the site where the barrier between worlds is thin, a location that previously housed the prison. Bernie plans a Great Offering: opening a rift for demons and richly rewarding himself. To do so, he needs the psychic abilities of Madonna, the latest in a line of women since 1898 who have fought but failed to stop him. But if Madonna can harness her powers, she can close the rift forever and save Redhill’s Christmas shoppers.

It’s 2004. There are no smart phones, no Facebook, no Snapchat or Instagram.

“The Mall” is the town square, a place to hang for mall rats and best friends, and a mecca for shoppers. Redhill Ohio has a new mall and many hope that it will revive the town’s dying economy.

As Christmas approaches, it seems they may be right. Then the murders start–all of them a necessary prelude to the main event.

On Christmas Eve there will be a battle and fate of the Universe determined.
