Prison Puzzle Pieces by Dave Basham

About Featured Book: Prison Puzzle Pieces: The realities, experiences and insights of a corrections officer doing his time in Historic Stillwater Prison by Dave Basham

PRISON PUZZLE PIECES (the first of a three volume series) is a non-fiction account of a corrections officer working in Stillwater Prison in Minnesota after he stopped traveling the country performing standup comedy and improv. Through examples, explanations and experiences, he explains how the entire system works, piece by piece, by presenting hundreds of events that occurred in that dysfunctional little city contained within those walls and razor ribbon. His unique perspectives earned him the respect of inmates and officers; on the other hand his life was in constant danger from other inmates and officers for him doing his job ethically.

All of this is presented from the author’s unique perspective. It contains some historic background and events pertaining to that prison; such as the infamous Younger Brothers. There is no way to explain every aspect of this restricted society, but these books come close. Many of the things that go on in the prison that have life and death consequences and are shocking can also have a very humorous side. Background on the officer is given to help you to understand how he made his decisions, whether you agree with them or not. Officers are gradually educated through strange and bizarre experiences on the job that can’t be imagined. Letters from the inmates to the officer give insight to their various states of mind. You will learn of the different areas of the prison such as visiting, shakedown, dining hall, cell blocks, segregation, etc., how it all works and what goes on there that can be inspiring or downright disgusting. Many strange relationship dynamics exist like the officers best mentor being a convicted mass murderer, inmates that break their code and have his back, the institutions most feared inmate becoming his friend, corrupt officers harassing him and deliberately placing him in dangerous situations, and inmate relationships of all sorts. Nothing is embellished. Nothing need be embellished.

The Half-Known Life: What Matters Most When You’re Running Out of Time

About The Half-Known Life: What Matters Most When You’re Running Out of Time:

“I’m going down now,” I said to a young woman a few seconds before the darkness-my first cardiac arrest. As I returned to work as a behavioral coach, it became maddening to hear about all-consuming, everyday problems and misguided priorities while I fought to merely remain conscious.

The Half-Known Life challenges conventional thinking of success, identity, and personal change. Most often, truly profound change happens following events that shake someone to their core-a car accident, death of a family member, or cardiac arrest that pulls them into a moment of clarity. Priorities change when time becomes precious. Problems look different when you have no energy left to give them. Why wait until you’re burnt out or for a life-changing event to occur before getting real about your life? Who are you when all of the accolades and accomplishments are gone? What does how you manage your time say about what’s important to you-about what matters most? Get out of your head and get into your life, before it slips away.

Featured Interview With Len Handeland

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I have lived in several locations throughout my life due to my late father’s career in the Army. He was a Sergeant Major, and we lived in places such as Ft. Devens, Massachusetts; Berlin, Germany, during the height of the Cold War; Elmira, New York; Ithaca, New York; and finally, Nashua, New Hampshire. When I turned 19, I moved to New York City and became a professional model. I also studied fashion illustration at the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.). I met my husband a few years later, and we moved to California in 1987. We lived in San Francisco for 27 years and then in the town of Sonoma, located in the wine country, for 11 years. We relocated to Palm Springs, California, three years ago, and we love living in the desert! My husband and I are proud owners of two cats, Felix and Felicia, who are siblings.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
As a child, I developed a strong love for reading books, particularly when my classmates and I were assigned books to review and write book reports on. While my classmates groaned, I looked forward to the task. I also maintained a personal journal, documenting my experiences with friends, family, and my crushes at school. As I got older, I took several creative writing classes to improve my writing skills.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have always been fascinated with horror novels. Whenever I read them, I feel the hairs on my neck stand up, my heart rate increases, and my mind races with vivid images depicted in the novel I’m reading. Some of the authors who have influenced me the most are Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Clive Barker, and the late Anne Rice. Out of all these authors, Anne Rice has been the most influential. Her work inspired me to write my dark vampire romance novel, titled “The Darkest Gift.”

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I am working on my sixth book, “House of Death.” The story is set in Ithaca, New York, and revolves around the life of a young man named William Martens. William inherits his deceased grandfather’s haunted mansion on top of a hill near Cornell University. However, William does not know the fact that the mansion is the site of the murder of a family before his grandfather had lived there. Soon, the ghosts of the murdered family members return from the beyond to warn William about the danger that he and his family are about to face.

I actually found I loved it. I began reading fairytales, mythology, history, all I could get my hands on, and was surprised to discover I did enjoy reading.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Marion Zimmer Bradley is my favorite author. Fantasy would by my favorite genre. This may sound weird W.B. Yeats, one of his poems inspired some cultural facets of my universe.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is Book 2 in the Sword of Stars Series. It is called Cursed Fates, it picks up slightly after where Book 1: Eternity is not Forever ends. It follows Aria and Kestrel as circumstances beyond their control take them on different paths. They navigate growing up, making friends, dealing with their past, and trying to survive in the world they call home. I highly suggest reading the first book, before you delve into the second.

Drawn from Life by Sarah P. Blanchard

About Drawn from Life by Sarah P. Blanchard:

Emma Harnett, 19, lives in western North Carolina with her volatile cousin Lucy, a frustrated artist with an alcoholic mother. When Lucy’s mother disappears unexpectedly, Lucy flies into a rage, bullying and injuring Emma.
Days later, they argue about who should drive down the mountain for food and supplies: Emma with a broken collarbone; or Lucy, who might be drunk. Their car crashes and three people die. Emma barely survives. Lucy, uninvolved and uninjured, vanishes.
Eight years later, Emma finds peace and purpose as bookkeeper and model for her deceased uncle’s legacy project, Stonefall Art Center. She still struggles with night terrors, physical pain, a speech impairment, memory loss, and the shame of an accidental killer.
Lucy returns, bringing chaos and needing money. Emma decides to bargain with her prodigal cousin: money, for truth about the crash.
Tensions escalate after vandalism at the art center, and suspicion falls on Lucy as Emma tries to learn whether the attacks are related to the crash.
A compassionate detective helps Emma recall fragments of memory. Was Lucy the driver, not her? The investigations require Emma to find courage and a new voice.
Another person may hold a key: Chaz, the son of the woman who died in the crash. An awkward foster-care kid, he’s Stonefall’s new handyman. He keeps a close eye on Emma, whom he remembers from childhood.
When Emma’s questions come too close to the truth, Lucy makes plans to remove Emma from Stonefall.
Emma finally fights back, and in the “accident” that Lucy has orchestrated, it’s she—not Emma—who falls.
With nothing left to lose, Lyssa finally shares the story that absolves Emma of guilt in the long-ago crash. Emma also learns how Chaz, the boy in the background, helped save her life.
Throughout, help comes from unexpected sources: the family lawyer, keeper of family secrets; a miniature schnauzer named for a notorious pirate; and of course the sympathetic detective who helps Emma find her refuge—and perhaps a chance at love.
