Shake It Off Leadership: Achieving Success Through The Eyes Of Our Labels

About Shake It Off Leadership: Achieving Success Through The Eyes Of Our Labels :

“Shake it off!”, shouts my coach and teammates from the sidelines after I missed a point.

Whether on the court, field or professionally, this phrase has motivated Betsy Cerulo to shake off the losses and get back up to give it her best. Being a successful business owner for 30 years has brought a myriad of victories and setbacks especially navigating the business playing field as an LGBT woman. Betsy takes on her labels of diversity with great pride and has been relentless in guiding employees and colleagues to never, ever give up, even when the odds are not in your favor. Betsy transformed her failing company out of the 2008 recession to a thriving 8(a) federal government contractor with a culture driven by collaborative compassion.

Betsy chronicles her journey to overcome discriminating barriers from childhood through business. Her courage to be vulnerable in revealing the tears and fears that she overcame, teaches the reader that with fire in your belly, you will tap into your own greatness to live your dreams. If you want to start a business, leave a job, clear out toxic relationships or allow yourself to surrender to love, Betsy shows us that our greatest riches are within our souls when we take the time to ask tough questions and be willing to listen for the answers. More than likely, we already know the answers yet it’s how we take action that leads us to the quality of life we are seeking.

Through her own mistakes, Betsy has overcome adversity to come from behind to live a joyful life filled with pride, as an LGBT woman, wife, parent and grandparent.

Betsy Cerulo is the CEO of AdNet/AccountNet, Inc., based in Baltimore, Maryland and Co-Founder of the Maryland LGBT Chamber of Commerce.

Featured Interview With Jori Aguilar Sams

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
When I write, I have a chance to give back what’s been invested in me. Spiced with a past that has led me to live in states all over the US, I’ve also lived in four different countries across Europe. This has supplied me with a palette full of colors…and plenty of writing material! So come and explore my mind and look at life through my lens.

Create. Inspire. Repeat!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was a sickly kid. Oh, so sickly! From age 10, writing was an outlet and my therapy. I started with poetry and advanced to short stories and little diddies. By the time I was 14, I wrote a script about a bike racer. Don’t ask me where it is! I’ve moved so many times, I’ve had to leave my past behind…

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My literary interests stretch across a wide spectrum. I like real heady stuff and have a great interest in Theology, so I read and write a lot of Bible studies and scholarly stuff. I’m greatly inspired but two of the greatest thinkers I have come across, Arthur Custance and Oswald Chambers. As far as non-fiction goes, I love Tolstoy. He was a legend. And Dickens for his ability to reach out to the working class.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’ve set out to write a new series called Making Waves with the first book Making Waves on the Aegean. This story came about when I told some friends over dinner one night about my adventures living on a sailboat in the Greek Isles. I was supposed to be teaching people how to sail, but instead…I was just making waves!

My friends loved the story and told me I needed to write a book about it.

So I did!

I have other books too, with new releases coming out every few months. In 2021, I released four books and I have another one dropping in a couple of months, so if you love books, come explore my mind!

Featured Interview With Naomi Brickel

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a mom first. I have six kids (including my son in Heaven), an amazing dog named Kelly, and I live in New Rochelle, NY. Professionally, my expertise is in youth and family engagement and I’ve presented to thousands in workshops and at state and national conferences. I’ve worked with young adults to promote their self-determination and empowerment, helped families in the practical and emotional aspects of navigating disability service systems across the lifespan, and worked with professionals to build capacity for more inclusive communities. My favorite things are cooking, wine, mixing fun cocktails, and Puerto Rico.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve loved reading since I got through my very first book, “Hop on Pop,” all by myself. My Dad always gave me books, and we would read together, which made me feel special in our large family. I’ve always enjoyed writing too. I’ve done a bit of poetry over the years, and write a lot for my work, but “Not to Spoil the Ending…” is my first published work. Hopefully not the last!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love spiritual and self help. In my heart and soul I’ve been most influenced by Brene Brown, Eckhart Tolle, and Fr. Richard Rohr. I think my own book, even if it’s not fiction, is similar to “The Shack” by Wm. Paul Young.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Not to Spoil the Ending… but everything is going to be ok is an inspirational non-fiction narrative that details the harrowing tragedy experienced in the sudden loss of my 15-year-old son and the subsequent anguish and then uplifting reflection which uncovered simple yet profound insights about peace and joy. Building on my own foundation in the wisdom and writings of Brene Brown, Eckhart Tolle, and Richard Rohr, I present Adam’s unique, playful, and poignant framework for happiness – one so uncomplicated it could only have come from a boy – developed through the recollections of kids who knew him and their recorded messages in a funeral visitation book. It is a powerful tribute to kindness, exhibited through stories of Adam’s life and incidents in the aftermath, and a testimony to redemption (see the cameo with former NFL superstar, Ray Rice).

I think that when I first started writing, I was motivated mostly by a desperate mom’s need to preserve any piece of my son’s life I could cling to, trying to get as much as I could into one place – memories kids had shared with me of his life, experiences after that emanated his presence, dreams, etc. I did not start with them, but what percolated out as I wrote were very powerful messages about peace and joy, and making this world more hopeful and heavenly. Most amazing was how simple and yet life changing it all was.

I’m moved by how much of an impact it’s had on those who’ve read it. I’ve gotten letters and emails, and have literally been stopped on the street on numerous occasions by people I knew barely, or not at all, just to tell me how much reading it changed their life. An antidote for today’s anxiety, filled with comforting insights about making our world more happy, hopeful and heavenly, it’s been called a “must-read for anyone who has loved and lost, or who may need beacons of ‘lights’ in these seemingly dark times.”

Bullyboy by Rachel Griffin

About Bullyboy by Rachel Griffin:

In this book, I speak on some of the harmful affects toxic relationships and generational cycles have on children. When they reach adulthood, those same examples and experiences lead to more traumas. The cycle will further continue. I’ve seen this within myself and in others around me. Though I’ve been able to heal, there are those who haven’t. Some of us are still caught in those cycles, whether it be purposely or otherwise.

Instead, we could have been striving for a better life. Not just for ourselves. We have our future generations to think about as well. Like in my previous work, I hope to inspire readers to heal, grow and be the change. Be the change they want, internally and externally. If not for you, then for those you love.

A failed novelist awakens one morning to find that his mother has come back to life, seven years after her funeral.

Len Holder thinks his mother is dead – until she reappears one morning in his living room.

For a week, Len relives a strained relationship with Mom while other mysteries pile up. He keeps hearing fragments of Joey’s radio show. His sister reports disturbing phone calls. Strangers he meets look like people from his past. Another stranger has taken over his insurance office.

No Title for Heartbreak: 66 devotions to uncover the light within heartbreak.

About No Title for Heartbreak: 66 devotions to uncover the light within heartbreak.:

Doubtful. Scared. Fearful. Paralyzed.

A shattered heart leaves you with all. Whether it be a breakup, a friendship that fell apart, a family member that passed away, or the destruction of your preconceived life plan; the pain of loss consumes you like nothing else. Perhaps the only thing more painful than a broken heart, is sitting in your brokenness alone.

Someone once told me that getting adjusted to a broken heart is like breaking a habit (that habit being the way your heart was prior to its breaking), and that it takes 66 days to break a habit. With that in mind, this 66 day devotional is designed to reintroduce you to God’s truth within the most vulnerable time of your heartbreak. A guiding principle to remind you that no matter what pain you are feeling, you are never alone.

May these 66 devotions help you understand His love isn’t dependent on a feeling, but rather a Truth that was made known to us so many years ago when Jesus defeated death. That same resurrection power lives in you, and is going to be not only what gets you through this heartbreaking season, but reveals a light within yourself you never knew could shine so bright.

Worms keep wriggling over her scalp, but each time she runs to the mirror everything looks normal. But she knows nothing is normal. She is terrified. What is happening to her? Aretha has faced down evil in her life before, but never anything as vicious as this attack. She tries desperately to cling to her faith in God, and to the love of her daughters, but will this be enough to save her? She feels the power of the evil spirits slowly growing, the noose tightening around her neck, and she still doesn’t know who is attacking her or why. Is this how her life will end? Or will faith and love be enough to defeat the darkness and bring Aretha back into the light?
From the author of A Place for Ida, A Time for Jonathan, Love Triangle, and The Dove Collection comes this compelling spiritual thriller about a woman’s struggle for her very soul. Patricia Richardson is noted for her intricate portraits of psychological distress, but in “Where Is God When Satan Is Knocking On My Door?” she raises the stakes even higher and puts the reader inside the mind and heart of a woman who is fighting for her life, her sanity, and her soul, against demonic forces.

The Holiday Plan: An utterly charming, feel-good romance

About The Holiday Plan: An utterly charming, feel-good romance:

From one of the freshest new voices in clean and wholesome romantic fiction, The Holiday Plan is the perfect escape for fans of Courtney Walsh, Annie Rains, and Debbie Mason.

Native New Yorker and author Verona Scott is battling heartbreak, both personally and professionally. Coming off a disastrous split with her ex, she’s struggling for inspiration to write her next book. And she’s lost without her favorite Aunt Theoni’s wisdom and guidance.

Hoping for a fresh start and to avoid the holiday completely, she’s planned a Valentine’s detox: a luxurious trip alone to the historic Courtington Castle hotel, near the adorably quaint town of Camelot Creek, tucked into a picturesque valley in the Adirondacks.

But escaping the heart-shaped balloons and red roses isn’t as easy as she thought.

This won’t be the restful retreat she’d imagined. Instead, she’s just walked into one of the biggest matchmaking events of the year. Not to mention, the incredibly attractive single dad and dating coach Troy Turner is heading the whole thing up, and he’s on a mission to include Verona in the festivities.

Troy is in the midst of a professional crisis of his own. After a bit of unfounded bad press, the very last thing he needs is a guest to cast doubt in the minds of his attendees.

Will Troy change Verona’s mind about the most romantic day of the year? Just when sparks begin to fly, an unexpected visitor checks into the castle, stirring up the past. No matter what, for Verona, Valentine’s Day is the day where everything changes.

A heartwarming, sweet romance that will whisk you away to a magical winter wonderland, and have you reaching for the hot cocoa and box of chocolates long after the holidays.

Featured Interview With Anna Pulley

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in the spiny desert arms of Tucson, Arizona, spent four years in Chicago, and then headed back west to the San Francisco Bay Area, because as much as a piece of my heart will always be in the midwest, I cannot winter.

I’ve been a hot dog slinger, a shoe salesman, a PE teacher, and a waitress at a retirement home (among other things) before I figured out the best way to degrade myself was as a writer.

(I kid. I love writing. If I couldn’t write, I would perish.)

I’m also queer, multiracial (white/Native American/Latinx), and deaf/hard of hearing. You would never know these things just looking at me, as I pass mightily and my hair covers my hearing aids. I’m trying to be better and more vocal about the parts of myself that aren’t so readily viewable, but it remains a challenge.

I’m the author of The Lesbian Sex Haiku Book (with Cats!), (Flatiron, 2016), which Tegan and Sara said was “an adorable and hilarious way to start the day,” Cheryl Strayed called a “must-read,” and Bound actress Jennifer Tilly said was “thoroughly charming.”

In 2021, I released an erotic short story collection, called Transgressions under the pen name Anastasia Fleur. The name is an homage to my mom’s side, the Flores clan.

Love Where You Work is my first (published) novel. I’ve written two others. One is a romance/mystery/paranormal tale about a young Native girl whose deafness enables her to hear spirits in other realms that help her solve a mystery. I still think it’s a good story but genre-wise, it’s a mess, so it may not ever see the light of day.

The other novel is an erotic romance and is with an agent currently.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Very early! My first “published” book was in my elementary school library — bless the librarians who asked me to contribute an illustrated story in second grade. From what I remember it was about a cowboy who gets shot by a raccoon. Unfortunately, no copies survived.

Writing has always been my etched in my fabric, no matter how unsure or waffly I’ve been in other areas in my life, writing has been the one constant. Part of my unshakeable, irrevocable self.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love pretty much any book that tells a good story. And I try to keep an open mind. Right now I’m reading a romance novel, a self-help book, a mystery, a book on editing, and a compilation of Native American myths.

The exception is horror because it gives me nightmares! Even scary books for children.

My “desert island” books, which inspire me constantly, are:

Sarah Manguso’s Ongoingness
Lorrie Moore’s Birds of America
Ocean Vuong’s Night Sky with Exit Wounds
And Maggie Nelson’s Bluets

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I wrote Love Where You Work to impress a girl.

I’d like to tell you that I have loftier ambitions––and I do! I want people (especially queer people) to feel seen and less alone. I want to make people laugh and feel warm and excited and turned on and loved. I want to write books where queer people have happy, exciting, interesting stories instead of tragic ones.

But mostly I wrote this book to impress my partner. It was conceived originally as a sexy birthday present, a short story called “HRotica.” (It bookends Transgressions.) We had been dating for two months at the time, and she works in HR, hence the title and subject.

Vika loved the story, and we brainstormed a plot together to make part 2, which we cheekily called “HRotica: The Age of Cumpliance.” After that, I was genuinely curious how the story of Julia and Clare would end, so I kept writing.

I was also dealing with grief related to the death of my father, and I made that a struggle for Clare as well. (Like Clare, my dad’s ashes are in my closet. Unlike Clare, who struggles with letting go and moving on, I haven’t been able to scatter the ashes because of pandemic thwarting.)

At its heart, the book is about the search for connection — and how we tend to complicate those things and get in our own way sometimes.

It took me 2 months to write initially, and about 6 months to revise.

The life Leah planned with Jace rapidly spins out of control when she becomes obsessed with the X-rated video, and the girl in it. Leah will do whatever it takes to right her new husbands wrong, even if it means getting rid of Jessica Fox for good . . .
