About What Heals the Heart by Jen Telger:
Eleven-year-old Annabelle and her friends live in the sleepy town of Pullman Station, where summers consist of neighborhood potlucks, backyard baseball games, trips to the community pool, and the heavenly aroma of warm sugar wafting out of Bohler’s Bakery. It’s idyllic, with nary a care save for one: Annabelle’s house sits between the two nastiest old bats in town, who happen to hate each other’s guts.
When seventy-something former best friends Cilla and Nattie had a falling out several years ago, Annabelle and her family got caught in the crosshairs living between them. While Annabelle’s mama stresses the importance of carrying out one’s Christian duty via kindness to all, she maintains a precariously delicate balance keeping both “gasoline” and “gunpowder” happy. As for Annabelle and her friends, they avoid both women, Cilla’s dog, and Nattie’s starter pistol, at all costs.
When a tragic accident shakes the neighborhood to its core and Cilla’s past comes back to haunt, will the sworn enemies find common ground and forgiveness before time runs out, or will they drive the entire neighborhood crazy until the bitter end?
“What Heals the Heart” is a funny, heartrending story of friendship, small-town life, the search for forgiveness, and what it might take to heal the heart. If you love women’s non-romance fiction that harkens back to the sweet nostalgia of childhood while navigating the pain of adulthood, you’ll love this story by author Jen Telger.
