About The Unnamed Girl by Mike H. Mizrahi:
In the fog of battle, Confederate Private Woody Woodard stumbles across a gold-cased ambrotype of a little girl near the body of a dead Union soldier. Somehow she becomes his only respite from the nighttime demons of war that torture him. He must find her.
An award-winning historical novel, The Unnamed Girl is the saga about one soldier’s quest for peace and purpose. And love. It’s 1862 in Virginia, and Woody has no more stomach for war. He leave his comrades temporarily to find the girl’s family, return the likeness, and give witness to how her father fell in battle.
Woody is wounded and captured; his mission interrupted. After escaping from a deadly Union prison camp, he resumes his search for the girl’s family in enemy territory, which leads him to the widow Rebecca Johnston. A conductor on the Underground Railroad in Ohio, Rebecca’s farm is in disrepair. She seeks Woody’s help as a hired hand, and in exchange she will help him find the girl in the photograph.
The Unnamed Girl maintains a sweeping storyline that ultimately takes Woody and Rebecca deep into Confederate territory to rescue a former slave in Lumpkin’s slave jail, and back to Ohio in search of the girl. A love that hangs by a thread because of lie stands in the balance. This is a story of renewal and transformation that transcends the pages of a novel. A romp that leaves readers satisfied and wanting more.
