About Runestaff Chronicles: The Awakening by Helen Row Toews:
Born to defend a far-off kingdom, can one teen outcast claim his heritage and face down an unspeakable evil?
Everything is going wrong for Kayden Bramley. Uprooted from his familiar surroundings so his family can care for his sickly grandmother, the fifteen-year-old is scared, lonely, and desperate for a change. But an even darker fate beckons when a mysterious man appears with a dramatic message: The troubled teenager is the last hope for an endangered magical land.
Bewildered when his beloved grandparent confirms his destiny, Kayden bravely seizes her Runestaff and agrees to take on the treacherous mission. Barely comprehending his role as heir to the throne as he gathers allies to his side, the tenacious young man plunges into a battle against sinister forces bent on conquest and destruction.
Will his quick-thinking courage be enough to protect the realm against a surging darkness?

Author Bio:
I’m an author, humorist, work in education, and carry a license to drive anything on wheels (stilettoes and lipstick optional). I grew up and still reside on the family farm near Marshall, Saskatchewan, Canada. We raise Charolais cattle and gophers (the latter being purely coincidental). While the countryside is dear to my heart, my passion is to travel.
I have three cats, since at least one is compulsory as any bonafide author will attest to, and write humor columns for newspapers across the prairies. This offers me a unique opportunity to share whatever interesting, bizarre, or funny situation I may discover in the course of a week. Working with children each day also affords a wealth of humorous material. The best of these stories I’ve compiled into a series of books called “Prairie Wool” while others are published on my website helentoews.com.
I also write YA fantasy. Since I was a child (hundreds of years ago) I loved reading, primarily fantasy. There was nothing so wonderful as escaping mundane life and finding myself in Middle Earth or Narnia with magical people and fantastic creatures. This translated into a lifelong desire to write those same sorts of tales.
My debut series, Runestaff Chronicles, has allowed me to believe in that dream and my fondest wish is that you may find your escape there as well.
