Rue_2013BWC2Featured Interview With Rue

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I graduated from Pepperdine University in Southern California with a degree in Journalism. My intimate knowledge of the Midwestern United States, the inordinate amount of time I spent in its churches’ pews and my unique parentage make me an expert on life after religion. Having moved 17 times by the time I graduated from high school I’ve seen more than my share of the Great Plains. I never stayed in one place long enough to make human friends. My best friends were all characters from my beloved books; and the love of reading led to a lifelong passion for writing.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I literally started reading by age one. I am a freak! Blame Hooked on Phonics. ☺
I always wanted to be a writer. I am a fairly introverted person and I always found it easier to express myself through writing.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Authors? Depends on the genre—I have many favorites. But, if you put a Marian Keyes book in front of me I wouldn’t be mad about that.
Genre? That is tough I have favorites in every genre— from “The Secret Garden” to the “Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” I just love to read – fantasy, romance, paranormal, historical fiction, how to, self-help, YA, children’s picture books – anything!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’m going to assume you don’t want me to regurgitate the synopsis ☺ I am well aware that a multitude of prejudice exists “It’s Not My Favorite” is my favorite for a number of reasons, but the most important one is its portrayal of the lesbian character. There are two main characters, sisters, one gay and one straight. The beauty of the story is that it portrays them both with the same normal, human qualities. They both struggle, they both have relationship dramas, they both have issues with their parents and they both find a piece of success. I hope that the book will bridge the gap between GLBTQ romance/humor and Contemporary romance/humor. Rather than targeting GLBTQ, specifically, I feel this book can slip into the mainstream and allow a far wider audience to experience a character they might normally miss.

Featured Author Patricia Neely-Dorsey

athorphotoFeatured Interview With Patricia Neely-Dorsey

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Patricia Neely-Dorsey. I am a 1982 graduate of Tupelo High School in Tupelo, Mississippi… located in the beautiful red clay “Hills” of Mississippi..and yes, the birthplace of Elvis Presley. I received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. After living for almost 20 years in Memphis, Tennessee, working in the mental health field, I returned to my hometown in August 2007. My first book of poetry, Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia- A Life In Poems was published in February, 2008 (Grant House Publishers). My second book , My Magnolia Memories and Musings -In Poems was published in February 2012.
I currently live in Tupelo with my husband James, son Henry, and Miniature Schnauzer, Happy.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My mother gave me a passionate love for reading and writing, and my father gave me an appreciation for poetry and great literature, especially that of African-American origin.
I am a bookworm ! I love books !
I never really planned on or thought about being a “writer”
I always hesitate to call myself a poet. I feel more like a vessel or conduit through which the poems flow. I never intentionally sat down to write any of them. They all came to be fully complete and neatly packaged, title and all. I just put them down on paper.
I wrote my very first poem in February 2007. I woke up on Valentine’s Day 2007 with the words of a poem forcefully dancing around in my head. I quickly got up and scribbled it down.
After that the poems just started to flow and flow .

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love to read all genres. I especially love reading the works of southern writers !
My love of the south, the southern way of life and my life in the south inspires all of my writing .
In the preface of her book of poetry , This is My Century, Margaret Walker wrote, “If I could write my epitaph it would read: Here lies Margaret Walker Poet and Dreamer…She tried to make her life a poem.”
She goes on the write, “The South is my home, and my adjustment or accommodation to the South-whether real or imagined (mystic and legendary), violent or nonviolent- is the subject and source of all my poetry. It is my life.”
These are my sentiments exactly…. I could not have said it any better myself. I write about the south. The South IS my home. It IS my life. I want readers to share my southern life…. in poems.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My books Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia: A Life in Poems and My Magnolia Memories and Musings – In Poems are a true celebration of the south and things southern. Using childhood memories, personal thoughts and dreams, I attempt to give a positive glimpse into the southern way of life. There are so many negative connotations associated with Mississippi and the south in general. I want to show a flip side of the coin. There is much to love about this much maligned and misunderstood part of our country. I would really love for readers to get to KNOW Mississippi (and the south) in a different light and I want to introduce them. I invite readers to Meet Mississippi Through Poetry, Prose and the written word.
I hope to publish the third book in the “trilogy” of sorts) in 2015.

Use-This-OneFeatured Interview With Stanley Laine

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in Indianapolis and continue to live in the Midwest to be near family and friends and because I still love it here. I find my environemnt has just about everything you could want within an hour’s drive, there are swamps, mountain-like areas, beaches, prairies, resorts, farms, big cities, small towns…just about every type of environment and weather imaginable, so there is never a dull moment.

One thing about me is I am obsessed with people and the human condition and our shared struggles. People and relationships fascinate me. I hope that comes through in my writing.

I really love connecting with my readers though my Facebook page and website.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started writing very young, and it was probably lousy, however my parents really encouraged me to continue. I had an English teacher tell me in high school that she expected to read me in paperback in the future so I took that as a good sign and had a lot of success with my writing through college. I have been fortunate to be around some really interesting people and stories in my life so I feel like I have a lot of source material for my my characters are always based on a composite of the people and relationships I have known.

I released ‘The Grand Lady of Springs Valley’ in 2013, a story that spans critical periods in one man’s lifetime, witnessing war, love affairs, temptation, financial ruin and at the center of it all, the construction of a luxurious hotel that becomes a mecca for the rich, famous and deceitful. Against a turbulent landscape and through many twists and turns, readers will follow the life of the narrator, as he learns vital lessons about secrets, desire and love.

My latest work, ‘Sovereign of the Seas’, continues in the character-driven vein of my previous work but also incorporates a significant amount of mystery into the plot. There is a lot of metaphor in this novel. Nearly every character and their associated storyline represent relational aspects of the divine and our human condition. My readers are smart and I know they will enjoy not only this narrative on its surface, but also appreciate finding the deeper meaning within the book. Every detail is connected in this story and has a reason for being in there.

I have a lot of projects underway right now but the one furthest along is a quirky detective series I have been wanting to start for some time now and am really excited about how it is turning out.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Since I spend most of my time writing and re-reading my own work I don’t get a lot of time for pleasure-reading these days but I do like W. Somerset Maugham, Carson McCullers, and James Hilton. I find film music to be very inspirational for my writing such as the late-great John Barry and Ennio Morricone. Ultimately the people in my life inspire my writing. My characters are real.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
‘Sovereign of the Seas’ is a suspense-romance and follows the connection bewteen three very different people on board the cruise ship and how they are connected. The book tackles some very difficult questions about our human condition and our relationship with the divine, and how we deal with tragedy. If you have ever been bullied, felt like the underdog, feared expressing your individuality, longed for romance, kept secrets, solved mysteries, faced tragedy, or questioned your faith then there is definitely something for you in ‘Sovereign of the Seas’. I have been told it is a serious page-turner but I won’t lie and tell you that there are not troubling and difficult aspects to the story, so tread with caution.

Featured Author Sandra Nachlinger

Headshot5Featured Interview With Sandra Nachlinger

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, I now live in the Pacific Northwest. People tell me I still have my Texas accent.
When not writing, I like to quilt, read, sew, garden, take photos, lunch with friends, and (like Granny in my most recent book, Bluebonnets for Elly) spend as much time as possible with my granddaughter. I also enjoy eavesdropping on conversations at restaurants, parks, and other public places, so I warn people to be careful what they say around me. It may end up in my next book!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been writing one thing or another since childhood, and I’ve always enjoyed writing letters and reading. I took my first creative writing class about fifteen years ago and have been writing essays, short stories, and novels ever since.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
There’s not enough room here to list all my favorite authors! I like Larry McMurtry, Ivan Doig, and Tony Hillerman for their masterful descriptions of the western U.S. For women’s fiction, I enjoy Jodi Picoult, Fanny Flagg, LaVyrle Spencer, Maeve Benchy, and Anita Shreve. I also like Carl Hiaasin and Ken Follett. My reading tastes are eclectic.
In addition to all those well known authors, I love to discover new writers. It’s so much fun to take a chance on someone I’ve never heard of and discover a beautiful story. I wish I could list all those wonderful writers here! They’re the ones who truly inspire me.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I started writing Bluebonnets for Elly in November, 2009, in the National Novel Writing Month challenge. However, I put it aside to work on the release of my first book –I.O.U. Sex, co-authored with Sandra Allen. Once I got back to Elly, I had a great time finishing the story. However, as I got back into the plot and began to know my characters better, Elly’s grandmother kept butting in. I finally had to let Granny Macauley have her say. The end result is a book that not only follows the romance between a man and a woman, but also the relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter. I hope readers enjoy the interaction between these two women, as well as the sparks that fly between Elly and Derek.

The fictional town of Shannon Ridge, Texas, is based on a small town in northeast Texas near Lake Texoma. My parents had a cabin there and we spent most weekends at the lake while I was growing up. I’ve always loved that area and enjoyed visiting it again through Elly’s story.

BLUEBONNETS FOR ELLY:
When Elly Macauley moves to Shannon Ridge, Texas, she expects to fill her days helping her grandmother—doling out medications and running errands. Still reeling from her fiancé’s betrayal, the last thing she needs or wants is a man, especially a good lookin’ one. She’s been down that road before.
Derek White’s wife left him without a word, and he’s reluctant to get involved with another woman and make the same mistake twice. But Granny Macauley’s granddaughter sure is tempting. He still doesn’t understand why Jeanette left him, so how can he explain that to Elly? And can he be sure he’s legally free?
Granny says some things come along only once in life and you have to grab them while you can. But when Derek’s past threatens and Elly’s ex-fiancé reappears, she must decide—give her former love a second chance or gamble on a man whose history may ruin everything.

Featured Author Wallace Pustinjak

51WGupdaHoL._SY400Featured Interview With Wallace Pustinjak

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Wyoming, I have lived here my whole life, and I would be content to do so until I die. Personal interests of mine include running (very slowly) when I don’t feel too lazy, baking all sorts of tasty treats, spending time in nature, and sampling all of the dark chocolate I can get my hands on. Reading, of course, has been my main hobby since a young age. Writing, on the other hand, is a passion that I have only discovered fairly recently.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on my father’s lap, reading a book. I am incredibly grateful to my parents for instilling my love of literature at a young age. Gradually, I became more independent with my reading, and all through my school years free time was spent in some fantasy world. Sports have never been my forte, so instead I turned to books to fill my time. Fantasy, science-fiction, fiction, non-fiction, science books, and just about anything else I could get my hands on were fair game. Eventually, my admiration for the authors grew so great that I realized I wanted nothing more than to join among their ranks. Though it took many years of effort, I am proud to say I have now published my first book.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
One of my favorite authors is J.R.R. Tolkien. The sheer amount of original thought needed to craft his world is astounding. Down to the smallest detail, the setting and characters of The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings are realized with the thoroughness of a historian paired with the creativity of a true artist. If I had even one hundreth of his ability as a writer, then I would consider myself a success. Another author, Hugh Howey, has given me inspiration in a different way. While I massively enjoyed his Silo Saga, what I find most impressive is his story of success. As a self-published author, his book Wool achieved massive success that earned him a place of high regard in the writing community. Afterwards, rather than abandon his self-published roots, he has become a figure-head in the movement for non-traditional publishing. I am proud to say that I agree whole heartedly with his policy that writing should be about the stories and the readers, not about the profits.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest (and first) published book is titled Riddles From a Recluse. It is a collection of fifty original riddles written in a poetic style. These are riddles meant to be enjoyed not only as a challenge, but as beautifal creations worthy of one’s time whether or not they are actually solved right away. The riddles are more closely related to those of antiquity than they are to the simplistic “what gets wetter the more it dries” or knock-knock joke style riddles of today. As a sample, here is one of my personal favorites:

Inadequate reflections of each facet of the mind.
The essence of profundity once skillfully combined.
Great stairs within a tower granting never ending sight.
Or petals on a flower with no purpose save delight.
These jagged stones thrown wantonly in ignorance and hate,
Are only given substance through the change they may create.

The original inspiration for writing a book of riddles most likely came from reading The Hobbit as a child. I was fascinated by the erudite exchange between Bilbo and Gollum, and I have been captivated by riddles ever since. A few years ago, while discussing the book with some friends I boasted that if given time I could probably write similar riddles. They scoffed, but to prove them wrong I went home that night and wrote my first riddle. Since then, I have poured my soul into perfecting Riddles From a Recluse. Writing and re-writing each riddle, laboring for hours over a single word choice, learning how to properly format a book, and creating the cover where all part of the labor of love

With complete honesty, I can say that after much deliberation I have determined my highest goal in life: I want to be admired and respected by complete strangers. One day, I hope to be able to walk onto a bus and see someone enjoying a book that I have written. I truly believe that Riddles From a Recluse has the potential to earn admiration from strangers if you will give it a chance. With the help of readers, one day soon I may be able to say that I have reached my goal.

Featured Author Carl Purdon

Head-ShotFeatured Interview With Carl Purdon

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born, raised, and still live in Pontotoc, Mississippi. I am married to a wonderful woman and have four kids and three (soon to be four) grandkids. As a boy, I dreamed of writing novels and flying crop-dusters. Guess which dream I chased until it came true?

My primary goal as a writer is to produce fiction that is not only entertaining, but realistic. I go to great pains to create characters my readers will remember long after they read the last page. A lot of the feedback I get is from readers who say they know someone just like one of my characters, or from people who saw themselves, their struggles, in one of my novels.

One of my greatest compliments came during an introduction at a speaking event. The host told the audience that my books reminded him of Merle Haggard with a touch of Mark Twain. I’ll take that any day.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I knew I would write novels at age five. I don’t know how or why I knew, but I have a distinct memory of standing in my front yard, wishing I could hurry up and start first grade (our school didn’t have kindergarten) so I could learn to write down the words in my head.

A lot of things happened during the time between that memory and when I finally sat down and started my first novel. I was in my late thirties or early forties when I started writing seriously. It took me several years to produce something I dared share with the world.

The only answer I have to the question of why did I wait so long, is that I wasn’t ready. Life had to knock me around a while, I suppose.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
James Fenimore Cooper made me fall in love with reading. Other writers who inspired me are John Steinbeck, Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens, and a slew of others I can’t name at the moment. A few weeks ago I discovered Elmore Leonard (yeah, I can’t believe I’d never read him) and I absolutely love his style of writing. It reminds me of my writing more than any other writer I can think of.

Believe it or not, most of my reading in the last several years has been non-fiction. History and biographies. Part of the reason is that I didn’t want my writing to be overly influenced by other fiction writers, but mostly I just love history and reading about people who did great things.

Who inspires me? Ordinary everyday people inspire me. I read somewhere the other day that behind every face is a struggle you know nothing about. I wish I knew who said it or where I saw it, because that single sentence holds so much truth.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
BLINDERS is a story from two points of view — an ex-con out to avenge his wrongful conviction, and the Mississippi sheriff whose job it is to contain him. Along the way they both learn things that challenge their convictions, and experience things that change them forever.

If forced to wedge it into a genre, I would say contemporary/suspense.

Featured Author Alysha Kaye

author-bio-photoFeatured Interview With Alysha Kaye

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in San Marcos, TX, where I also received my BA in Creative Writing from Texas State University. I worked in marketing for a brief and terrible cubicle-soul-sucking time until I was accepted into Teach for America and promptly moved to Oahu. I taught 7th grade English in Aiea for two years and also received my Masters in Education from University of Hawaii. I now teach in Austin, TX and try to squeeze in as much writing as possible between lesson planning. I dreamt about The Waiting Room once, and offhandedly wrote my boyfriend a love poem about waiting for him after death. Somehow, that became a novel.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was an only child and writing was always my creative outlet! I’d fill notebooks upon notebooks with stories and poems.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Salinger, always. But more recently, Mark Zusak and Audrey Niffenegger. I’m a huge fan of realistic fiction, but I also enjoy fantasy and sci-fi from time to time.
Everything inspires me- everyone I meet! My students are especially inspiring though:)

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Jude and Nina are the epitome of that whole raw, unflinching love thing that most people are jealous of. That is, until Jude dies and wakes up in The Waiting Room, surrounded by other souls who are all waiting to pass over into their next life. But unlike those souls, Jude’s name is never called by the mysterious “receptionist”. He waits, watching Nina out of giant windows. He’s waiting for her. What is this place? How long will he wait? And what will happen when and if Nina does join him? The Waiting Room is a story of not just love, but of faith, predestination, and philosophy, friendship and self-actualization, of waiting.

Featured Author Deborah Blake Dempsey

THE-HOPPERNOTS_BOOK-ONE-COVERFeatured Interview With Deborah Blake Dempsey

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a New Yorker by birth, a Floridian by the number of years raised there, and a New Englander by choice. I love good books, belly laughs, fabulous shoes, and travel. I have a twisted sense of humor and I truly believes laughter and books are the elixirs of life. Currently, I live in New Hampshire with my husband Joe. The Hoppernots is my first novel.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always loved to write. I wrote my first story called “The Lebonski Chronicles” when I was thirteen. The story was written as a Mad Libs (where you fill in the blank with verbs, nouns, adjectives, pronoun, etc.) and was based on my love and utter devotion to the band Duran Duran. While my heart beat hard for Simon LeBon, my best friend’s heart sang for Roger Taylor. This was my first try at “real” writing and, given what it was, I think it was pretty darn good. I still have that story, and no, it will never be shared.

When I was in college, I won a short story contest. I was surprised and shocked I won, because: 1) I didn’t know my professor was holding a contest until he announced it before calling out my name, and 2) I took maybe 45 minutes to write it, but learning my quickly dashed off short story was a winner was the lighted match that turned my interest to writing.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have eclectic reading taste from Children’s Books (Middle Grade and Young Adult) to Adult Fiction (Thrillers, Romance, Mysteries) to Non-Fiction (Self-Help, New Age, Biographies). I don’t restrict my reading to genre. I love discovering new ideas and story lines that can enrich my own experience.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Have you ever wanted to he a hero? Well try being one when your a frog and want to save your world. I fell in love with frogs many, many years ago and found myself wondering about their life (and the lives of all animals in the wild). The next thing I know, three little frogs decided to tell me their story. Here’s a brief look:

Around Lake Fibian, Max, Cristobel, and Spyder are notorious. Stories of their pranks and troublemaking ways have followed them all of their lives. When they hear the tales about a creature called the Hoppernot, they believe the Elders are making up stories to keep young frogs (okay, mostly them) in line.

But when frightened Elders announce a Hoppernot sighting, the trio think they know exactly what to do. With a nose for adventure—and because the Elders are all talk and no hop—they sneak off to find out if the legendary creatures are real and discover Hoppernots not only exist, but they are destroying their home and putting lives at risk.

The adventure begins when Max, Cristobel, and Spyder issue a call to action to drive the dangerous creatures away from their beloved home. Along the way, they discover a secret weapon, an unlikely alliance, and they must find a way to make the Elders forget their troublemaking past and trust them enough to follow them into a battle of survival and fight for the lake they call home or risk losing it . . . and their lives.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Raised in South America. a small town in Argentina where my parents moved for work. I grew up there, absorbing that soccer culture.
I moved to Central Florida some years ago. Florida -even though I am not totally okay with the heat, is a nice area.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always had a fascination with books. I love libraries and bookstores. My whole family was into literature. My father is an avid reader, from Current Affairs, action-adventure novels, black thrillers, history. My mother is more into Ethology, Biology. She was bringing me books all the time trying to keep me home at least a couple of hours a day. If I wasn’t at school, I was playing basketball and soccer all day long.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I don’t have a favorite author, I have favorite books, With that being said lot of John Updike books, Saul Bellow, many others. I was a sucker for Frederick Forsyth when I was a teenager. I don’t know where mi inspiration came from. Let’s do a brief thought experiment. I tell you the following: And I don’t follow a plan.

Featured Author Morgan Bauman

da91b6f2287e0ad8976fbc.L._V402026060_SY470Featured Interview With Morgan Bauman

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I moved around a lot growing up–probably about ten to twelve times total. I spent most of my childhood in Phoenix, Arizona and most of my young adulthood in Las Vegas, Nevada, though, so I’d say that I come from the desert. Unfortunately, the desert life didn’t suit me. When I graduated high school, I moved to the Pacific Northwest, and I’ve lived here ever since.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My parents have home videos to verify this for any skeptics out there, but I’ve been in love with books since I was a baby. They’d pull out a stack of twenty or thirty books and read them off one at a time. When they reached the end, I’d demand another round of stories.

I started telling stories of my own as a toddler, usually with finger-painting, but I didn’t get serious about writing until high school. When a good friend said she wanted to read the story I’d just described, well, I decided to give it a go. The first draft was an abomination, of course, but aren’t they all? Regardless, I didn’t know it was terrible–all I knew was that I loved writing more than I’d ever thought possible, and I couldn’t imagine stopping for anything.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors right now are probably Mercedes Lackey, Neil Gaiman, and Lindsay Buroker. I reread Joust recently and loved it just as much as the first time I read it. Good Omens is my go-to book for recommendations; I’ve had eight copies borrowed and never returned. Then there’s the Flash Gold Chronicles. That first book hooked me, and I can’t help but leap out of my seat when I see there’s a new one.

All of those fall under the broad banner of fantasy, I suppose. I’ve always been predisposed toward science fiction and fantasy. Making the unreal become real is the greatest power of a book, in my opinion. I try to back up all of my own fiction with enough fact to make it feel possible.

I draw most of my inspiration from research into subjects I find fascinating, particularly psychology and sociology. I do extensive research into many topics, though, depending on the work in question. For example, I did 1000+ pages of peer-reviewed research just for my 5000 word short story, The Great Ships.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Rewritten opens in the perspective of a character who faces active deception. Every character has a reason to lie to her and keep her from seeing the whole picture. Fortunately, Ray is a bright and tenacious girl who fights for her answers, and every mystery finds its resolution by the conclusion of the series.

At its heart, Rewritten is a story about learning to forgive yourself–not by justifying your mistakes, but by learning and growing from them.

In all honesty, of everything I’ve written, my Qol stories are the most important to me. I mentioned earlier that a friend told me she wanted to read the story I’d told her–well, that story was Rewritten I: Fallacy. I started it back in October of 2003 and spent a decade rewriting and editing it and its sequels before they finally hit the presses.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My first book was an Apple computer resource directory that became a best seller. I started writing fiction after the release of the directory because on one of the promotional tours my business partner and I were abducted and held hostage. I wrote a novel about the experience called Toe Tags and TNT which launched my fiction writing career.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Mark Twain is a my favorite and the hundreds of reviews I have received compare my writing to his style.

Amazon Kindle: —Featured Author Review— Rolland Love – “Love’s writing transfigures his Ozark Mountains stories into a series of fantastic tales Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer could have only dreamed of.”

photoFeatured Interview With Christine E. McLean

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am 100% Jamaican. Born in the capital city, Kingston, I was always and quiet and focused child. My mother and I moved to the town of Mandeville when I was 3 years old. This is where I was raised and it is the place I truly call home. My home overlooks my community and is close to the third largest university on the island, the Northern Caribbean University. My main aim in life is to inspire others.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I am an only child so I had to find some amusement during my spare time. Besides creating an imaginary school when I was about nine years old, I started reading the Baby Sitter’s Club Series. I know that I must have read several other books before that since my mother encouraged me to read, but that is when I truly remember starting to read. I was enthralled by the story line and would get lost in my own world for hours reading.
I actually only recently began writing. My first self-help book was completed in April and it was published in May.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I actually have four favorite genres: suspense, mystery, romance, and self-help. There is none that I really prefer more than the other. Of all the self-help books I have read there are three that stand out: Unleashing Your Potential by Myles Munroe, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell, and Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Since these books are the ones that truly stand out to me, I would say these three authors inspire me the most. They truly caused me to view life differently and change my approach to aspects of my life.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The greatest things in life are produced during moments of strain and pressure. In order to truly transform your life, some pressure must be exerted. Becoming the Best You shows you how to apply pressure to key areas of your life and use that pressure to reap success. Featured Author Salem Archer

Salem-Archer-smallFeatured Interview With Salem Archer

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Salem Archer, and I’m a newly self-published author. My debut novel, Moondance in Red, was released on June 11th. Just a little background about me: I studied English literature and received a master’s degree from Appalachian State University. I love to travel, but I never want to stay gone very long. I think I’m a bit of a homebody. I still live in the small North Carolina town in which I was born and raised. Of course, there are some negatives to living in one’s hometown, but it has its advantages. There’s something very comforting about knowing everyone’s name in the café on a Saturday morning trip for waffles. The downside? Try keeping it from everyone in that café that you write steamy hot romance novels. Scandalous!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Without a doubt, my first fascination with a book was with Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. I guess I first encountered this book in kindergarten, so around age five. You know, there have been a few happenings in my life that left such marked impressions that I can remember sensory details about the experience—things like the taste of what I was eating, the smell in the air, the colors I saw around me. Sensory memory is a very powerful thing. Reading Where the Wild Things Are is the only experience which left a memory of playing inside of my imagination. Yeah, South Park got it right. Imagination Land does exist. I’ve been there. I remember, fairly vividly, pretending to be Max and living among the wild things. My bedroom became just like his bedroom. I remember more than just pretending to be Max; I remember what it was like to be Max (in Imagination Land, of course). That book was more than just a bunch of pages with pictures and words, it was an experience. That was my introduction to the power of books.

I started writing in high school. I think it was an expression of teen angst back then, like it is for so many teens (funny how they use the very mode of expression that many of them rebel against in English class—namely poetry). I wrote small bits of poetry in the form of song lyrics. I had them stashed all over my room as a teenager. Sadly, most of them are lost now. I never believed in myself enough to preserve them, to take my writing seriously. Then, when I went to college, I was fortunate enough to land in the writing class of Dr. Ron Colthard. In one of my typical smartass moves, I turned most every piece I wrote in that class into a humorous essay. Rather than chastise me, he took it upon himself to edit and critique those crazy things. He made me see that my self-indulgent bull could be turned into little gems of at least moderate literary merit. Before that class was over, Dr. Colthard tried numerous times to get me to submit something to the Cold Mountain Review (ASU’s creative writing publication), but I was too scared or maybe just too young and stupid. It took me two major jobs, a master’s degree, and twenty years to gain the courage to put my work out there. Now that I’ve done it, I wish I could go back to 1992 and smack my former self right across the head.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Wow, that’s a tough question. It’s so hard to narrow it down. Over the years, there have been so many great authors who inspired me. I know this is going to sound cliché, but I love Shakespeare—his wit, his base sense of humor, his understanding of the common human experience. And jeez, anyone who can steel that many plots and end up more famous than the poor souls who got jacked is pretty damn smooth. I love Steinbeck. I love Cormac McCarthy (The Road is pure genius). I love Flannery O’Conner and Stephen King. Right about now, you are probably wondering why I write romance novels. I’m getting there; just hold your horses … I write romance because I love the way romance novels make me feel, and I believe romance authors are sorely underrated. Look at the body of work produced by romance novelists. They are one of the most prolific bunches on the planet. There are so many greats. I’ll just stick to a few of my recent favorites. I love Emma Chase’s Tangled Series. I love Alice Clayton (Wallbanger has one of the funniest sex moments I think I’ve ever read). I love and admire R. L. Mathewson for creating the sexy Bradford boys in her own way. And, oh God, Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec—you just have to read it. The list could go on and on, so there is just one more I’d like to mention. Darynda Jones has ruined my life with her Charley Davidson series. I blame her if my second book is delayed because I just had to read all of the first five books, again, right before Sixth Grave on the Edge came out. I’m not a typical fan-girl. I don’t get hooked, usually. But I’m so in love with Reyes Farrow that I might even leave my own character for him. Obviously, with a list like this, I love humor. In my own writing, I try to balance my love of humor, drama, and witty language. Hopefully that’s how it comes across.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Moondance in Red is my debut novel. It took me about a year to write, edit, and publish. But to be fair, I got delayed a couple of months by the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Contest, so I could have put it out in less than a year. (I never expected to make it past the pitch round in the contest. That was a nice surprise.) Once the ABNA was over, I was free to publish. Moondance in Red is most definitely a romance novel, but I had hoped to give my readers a little of everything. One of my reviews states, “This is not your average romance novel. It is so much more.” I certainly hope so. In addition to what I’ve been told, are “smoking hot” sex scenes, there is drama, humor, a character questioning her religious beliefs, and the underlying truth about perception of gender roles in the south. Also, I wanted to create a strong and capable heroine in this novel, and I think I did that with Maggie Dupree. As far as my hero goes, one reviewer wrote: “Mason Reid is every girl’s dream. He’s handsome, rich, and oh so sexy.” I won’t give a complete plot summary here, but I certainly hope readers will visit Amazon or my webpage to read the full description.

300x300Featured Interview With Lou Majors

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a billion year old soul awakening in the third dimension.
As you read these words on your screen I hope you realize I am also a thought you’re having about yourself, an opening to the possibility of a faster more complex experience, a thought that’s a wormhole to visiting our self on every level of existence; and, thoughts that can show you how
when you’re ready.

Life is a beautiful experience of knowing more and more about our selves and loving the adventure of our souls as everyone and everything..

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I used to hate writing but at the age of 26 when my metaphysical experiences and research began I fell in love with reading and writing. In the deepest part of my research I could read a book a night and write reams of information.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I read for information and have studied and read just about every metaphysical author of any impact the last 38 years, especially in the 90’s, I ran a metaphysical book department at Oxford Books reading
a book a night most evenings.
As I advanced in my personal journey the information flow came to a halt. Ten years past with no real earth shattering information and I felt it was up to me to try to discover the missing information we needed to evolve by accessing our collective or morphogenetic cloud of information from all beings. This culminated on December 31, 2010 when I clearly envisioned the final step.

Beyond that am I more than a primate? How can I know this via a direct experience?
Multidimensional exploration, shifting to alternative event streams and parallel universes, overcoming space and time to live as a Supreme Being … does that sound like a sci-fi fantasy? Featured Author Forbes West

forbeswest-2Featured Interview With Forbes West

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a Chicago transplant living in Southern California with an unnatural Irish-American fetish for all things Cuban. I drink too much wine, smoke too many cigars, and think that I’ll being classy when I’m actually posing. But I’m entirely self-aware of my own silliness (I pray that I am so self aware) and I like to see myself as three characters- a real person of flesh and blood who’s a half-way decent guy, a goof who wants to just party my mind into oblivion, and a tortured author looking to grasp the infinite and somehow refine what I’ve witnessed into young adult stories so I can make a dollar and earn a pulitzer. So in other words, I’m trying to break my mind down quickly.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I realized my fascination pretty early on- I had a slight reading disorder of some sort (never explained really, but I guess I was just a slow learner) so my Mother tossed anything my way to read. Naturally it progressed from comic books to magazines to reading the never ending “Battletech” series because I’m a kid at the time who likes to hear about people in giant robot machines murdering each other in the 31st century. I started writing in 2001 when I got more into Stephen King- especially after reading “The Gunslinger”. The book was everything I loved mashed into one- the wild west, science fiction, supernatural horror, a bad ass hero- and I realized- holy shit, I want to do something like this. I want to see more of these stories. I need to make up some of these type of genre bending, screw the literary rules type stories because there wasn’t enough out there. So I naively thought, I gotta help out here. I gotta see more of this stuff. So when I write, I write stories I wanted to read and I’m sorry, I don’t write what I think an audience is looking for, per se. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect my audience I just think the moment you are trying to please an audience instead of focusing on what the story should be you are sunk before you can even set sail.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Science Fiction is my own personal cocaine that I am deeply addicted to but I like to cut it with some history at times with a dash of Hemingway. Favorite authors and their books? Well, here’s the laundry list: Frank Herbert’s Dune. Stephen King’s The Gunslinger (Plus its sequels). Nick Cole’s Wasteland Saga. Robert Hughes and his great book, The Fatal Shore (the founding of Australia might as well have been a science fiction story with the strange and interesting history of putting prisoners on the proverbial dark side of the moon) . Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Whitley Strieber and James Kunetka’s WarDay. Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Revolution at the Gates: Selected Writings by V.I. Lenin and Slavoj Zizek. Ron Paul’s The Revolution: A Manifesto. Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell. All of those are books by authors who press on my mind and who have left dents in my subconscious.

Two people though inspire me to write- my wife, who kicks me in the ass to get writing again (domestic terrorism is good inspiration) who then loves my work (best inspiration to have) and Ernest Hemingway. He may have ended his life badly but his journey was one of a guy who lived to the fullest and then some. Not too many get live four or five lifetimes in one like he did.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Nighthawks at the Mission is a deconstruction of the settler in space story. Its about the reality of what would happen if modern day Americans suddenly had the means to colonize this new world- and for everyday types to make it through a portal and into this Lord of the Rings like land to exploit and abuse and make a cheap buck off it. Sarah Orange, the main character, is a 20 year old drunk and addict who on a whim takes off to The Oberon, this new world found in this universe’s 1995 and while there hooks up with this criminal salvagers (“Nighthawks”) while pretending to have a regular 9-5 job in order to make a buck. While in this new land filled with aliens and high tech abandoned cities of an extinct human civilization that’s become a feral zombie horde, she becomes the girl on the side to a slick con-man salvager, deals with terrorism, and discovers a very dark family secret while earning thousands of dollars.

Here’s what the book’s jacket says:
The Oberon. Off-World. Thousands of settlers from America have come to live in this mysterious land accessed only by an energy portal in the South Pacific. The settlers are there to mine orichalcum- a mineral that can give even the casual user magical powers – and to reap the strange high tech salvage that litters the dead cities of an extinct human civilization.

In today’s universe, it’s the last place a settler from the USA can find the old American dream alive and well. Facing a futureless existence and betrayed by her long-time boyfriend, Sarah Orange leaves the Earth. There she falls in with a group of illegal salvagers that operate at night in the empty ruins that dot the landscape. Sarah risks death and betrayal from The Oberon’s corporate overseers as well as the murderous hatred of the alien Ni-Perchta that live a medieval existence there. With her life spinning out of control, Sarah searches for love and money in a world so close to- and yet so different from- our very own.

Featured Interview With Chariss K. Walker

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Arkansas and grew up in the Mississippi Delta, living the life of a farmer’s daughter during the 1960s. I have traveled a great deal and lived in 17 states. I currently live in Amarillo, Texas.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I began to read at a very early age, even before I attended school. I was intrigued with books and read everything I could get my hands on. As for writing, I scribbled poems and short story lines in the margins of my text books during class. A book was always in my hand and a pen was never far away either.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love stories that get you invested in the character, such as Jack Ryan and Alex Cross. Long ago it was Travis McGee and Jesse Stone, just to name a few. It would be difficult to list any one favorite or even two or three, but I do tend to reach for the mystery or thriller series when I have time to read something other than nonfiction. I believe that most of the characters in my authored books are based in part on people I have know throughout my life whether good, bad or in-between.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Kaleidoscope is the first book in The Vision Chronicles, an eight book paranormal thriller series. Each book details approximately eight weeks in the life of Mike Lewis, our hero. When the first book opens, Mike is seeking help from an old friend because he has spent the last fifteen years fighting this gift. He sees the future through a kaleidoscope every time he closes his eyes, even when he kisses a lover. During the next eight weeks, Mike learns new techniques that help him lose his aversion to the gift and as his acceptance grows, the ability changes and evolves. The images begin to reveal personal messages and warn him of danger. He discovers that someone is after him and that they will do anything, even kill, to get him. Those trying to abduct him become more aggressive forcing Mike to take new measures to protect himself. Eventually, Mike realizes that he can never get free of them and after the deaths of close friends, he decides to run. The book ends with a cliff-hanger and Spyglass, the second book, continues where Kaleidoscope left off.

Featured Author Peter Last

MeFeatured Interview With Peter Last

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in the state of Wisconsin though at the age of 6 my family moved to Alabama. I was 1 of 10 children (I Am Number 6) who were all home schooled K-12. I am currently going to college for a degree in Civil Engineering and am a huge fantasy and sci-fi nut.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I loved books since before I can remember. Being in a large, home schooled family the stereotype would say that we didn’t watch TV, and it would be correct. Reading was (and still is) my favorite form of entertainment. As I grew up reading, I guess I became a bit of a critic because I would always re-write the stories in my head to what was a “better” ending than the one written down. That was the first indication that I would be a writer. I started writing at age 11.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank E Peretti, and countless others who I’ve read over the years. I love books and love reading. The big problem, of course, is that a good author only comes along every once in a blue moon. I hope that I’m that kind of author (fingers crossed!)

As you could probably tell from my favorite authors, my favorite genre is fantasy/sci-fi. I just can’t get enough of these books as long as they’re well written; however, there’s nothing worse than a bad fantasy or sci-fi. Part of that is because there’s really no excuse to be boring with the subject matter you have to work with!

I pull inspiration for my writing from a lot of sources including my family and friends, authors I’ve read, and movies I’ve seen. The funny thing about what I read inspiring me is that I learn at least as much about what I don’t want to right like as what I want to emulate. It doesn’t matter how bad the book, you can always learn something.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest (first) book is called “Guardians of Magessa” and is the first in the “Birthright Chronicles.” The book is set in the mythical land of Magessa and follows some young military cadets who find themselves in the unlikely and unfortunate situation of being the last line of defense against the mortal enemy of the country. Basically the story is meant to introduce the characters and the story of the rest of the series but does it in an action-packed and interesting way.

At its core, the book is about realistic characters portrayed in a fantasy setting. You can really relate to them as they battle against the enemy army while struggling with self doubt and other physical and mental issues. What makes them really easy to relate to though is that not all of their problems are of the epic variety. Sometimes they just don’t like other people who they have to work and train with. Because even people in epic situations have normal problems!

There are several memorable characters in the story including an incredibly patriotic soldier, an orphan struggling with the loss of her father, a few magicians with checkered pasts, and a host of other people, all of whom must band together to defend the country. I won’t say too much about them or it would spoil a lot of the book. Suffice it to say that there is a character here for just about everyone.

As to writing the book, it took me something like 11 years in total. I started my first draft at age 11 and am currently 22 at the time of publication. It’s been a long, hard, tiring road with a lot of re-writes and editing, and cover art decisions, and map making pow-ows and so many other things you would think of. Thankfully it’s finally done and I can introduce the world to my world, the land of Magessa.
