Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in Chicago, but have lived in Wisconsin since I was a teenager. You could say I’ve worn a lot of hats over the years–newspaper journalist, magazine writer, stay-home soccer mom, prosecuting attorney, blogger, author, photographer–and usually more than one hat at a time! I switched careers and went to law school when I was forty after surviving a serious horse-back riding accident, and was lucky enough to find a part-time law school program that let me keep up the hands-on mothering my kids were used to. Now they’re all grown up…and so my steady companions are a wolf-sized border collie mix named Lucky and two cats, Smokey and The Meatball. I was just in a tug-of-war in the snow the other day with Lucky over a frozen rabbit carcass he’d found and wanted to eat, so you could say there’s never a dull moment with these guys! In the last few years, despite the distance, I’ve managed to reconnect with my home town as a writer, and love to get down there once in a while to read essays as part of the “live lit” scene.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I literally read my way through childhood! I was not an outgoing little girl, and so I spent a lot of time in my room with my nose in a book–horses, mythology, Nancy Drew mysteries, regency romances. I didn’t think of writing as a talent or a profession until I stumbled into a journalism degree in college, and then I was hooked. Over the years, there’s been a progression to what I write. First it was newspaper style where you just report the facts using very simple sentences. Then the magazine writing allowed me to use more description and a more convoluted sentence structure, and even let a little opinion or perspective come through. When I finally started blogging, I was writing just for myself and not to please an editor or an audience, and it felt quite liberating! It’s a little like opening Pandora’s Box at times–I’m more even sure what’s lurking around in the recesses of my mind until I start writing it down, leaving room for more to burble to the top and get discovered.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
If I had to be shipwrecked on a desert island with ONE BOOK, it would be Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca.” But in the past few years I’ve become enchanted with William Kent Krueger’s series of novels featuring Cork O’Connor, a small-town lawman who straddles the worlds of the white townsfolk and the reservation-dwelling Native Americans to solve crimes in deep-woods Minnesota. The detective element of the stories is always wonderfully plotted, but Cork’s relationships with his family and friends are fully half of the charm…along with the lyrical way he writes about the beauty of the North Woods.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
When the Shoe Fits…Essays of Love, Life and Second Chances is a “best of” collection of my essays from my FIRST three collections…and a few other places. These are all “slice of life” essays, and I think my life runs the gamut of many women’s experiences–motherhood, divorce and post-divorce dating, reinvention, learning to cope with things like power tools and home repairs, changing careers, elderly parents, going back to school in mid-life–and then there’s the lighter stuff like chocolate, high heels, pets, nature and the view from the back of a Harley. I’ve often been told they are inspiring and empowering, and I am always grateful and humbled when someone tells me they felt a real and positive connection with my words.

Featured Author Barb Caffrey

Barb2014Picture1Featured Interview With Barb Caffrey

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m Barb Caffrey, a writer, editor, book reviewer, and musician. I was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, have lived in half a dozen other states, but somehow ended up back in Racine, Wisconsin anyway. I also have a small dog who makes his wishes known via body language (it’s either that or telepathy, but I’d rather go with “body language” as it’s safer).

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
By the time I was fourteen, I realized that if I had a choice between buying some candy and a paperback book, I’d rather buy the book. I devoured Andre Norton, Poul Anderson, Orson Scott Card, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert A. Heinlein, and looked for more authors to feed my addiction, before I realized that no one could write the stories I wanted to read. So I started writing them myself, also around that time.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors to read are Lois McMaster Bujold, Mercedes Lackey, Rosemary Edghill, Katharine Eliska Kimbriel, Stephanie Osborn and Elizabeth Moon. (Yes, I do like male authors — see the above answer, too! But these are my favorites.) My favorite genre to read is fantasy, followed closely by science fiction, then romance. My late husband Michael B. Caffrey is my primary inspiration for writing, but I also have been inspired by all of the authors I’ve listed here, most particularly Rosemary Edghill, Katharine Eliska Kimbriel, and Stephanie Osborn, who’ve given generously of their time and expertise over the past several years.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is also my debut novel, AN ELFY ON THE LOOSE. Bruno the Elfy has been told that he’s very young, he has little magic, and he has no place in his own society back in the Elfy Realm (a parallel version of Earth). However, everything he’s been told is a lie. Quickly sent to Knightsville, California, in the Human Realm (our Earth) and told to watch for magic, he’s captured by a strange human family — the parents of his soon-to-be love interest, Sarah. She, too, has been lied to her entire life. They turn to the only person Bruno knows who might help them, Roberto the Wise (one of his Elfy teachers), and Roberto does try to rescue them. However, they all end up back on our Earth, with Roberto being captured in short order by Sarah’s villainous parents. How will Bruno and Sarah free Roberto? What is a Dark Elf doing in Knightsville? And how will Bruno and Sarah take it when they find out they’re much closer to adulthood than it appears, and are meant for one another?

It took me fourteen months to write the ELFY duology, and I enjoyed every second of it. (BTW, book 2, still titled ELFY though that title probably will change in the not-too-distant future, is due out in April of 2015). It’s funny, it has elements of paranormal and mystery and romance, and it features a great coming of age story for Bruno and Sarah in the bargain.

One final thing that you may find interesting: it took me nearly ten years to find a publisher that enjoyed Bruno and Sarah’s adventures as much as I did (that publisher being Twilight Times Books). During that time, I revised and updated the ELFY duology several times. The story wouldn’t exist without the help and support of my late husband, Michael B. Caffrey (1958-2004). But I probably wouldn’t have kept sending it out there to find a publisher if not for my late best friend Jeff Wilson (1963-2011)…I really wish these two men had lived to see my book get published.

Featured Author Alex Athanassakos

my-photo-higher-resolutionFeatured Interview With Alex Athanassakos

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Greece, but now I live in Toronto, where I moved in 1979. I initially came to Toronto to visit my brother, but fell in love with economics and stayed to do a graduate degree on that subject.

I don’t have any pets, but I do have two sons.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved reading. By grade 11 I had even compiled a list of “must” reads that included HG Wells’ World History, Marx’s Das Capital and Plato’s Republic.

This particular book (i.e., Our Travels with Alexander) I began writing 24 years ago when we returned to Canada from our year off.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorite authors include: Graham Green (the title of my book is a play on one of his books “Travels with my Aunt”), Par Lagerkvist, Xenophon, and Harry Mulisch.

My favorite genre is history. However, I find that contemporary history books read more like fiction these days. So I began reading the “original” texts of ancient writers. I started with Herodotus and in 3 years I have reached Dios Cassius. I believe I will stop when I reach the 16th century authors since, owing to the invention of the printing press, a lifetime will not be enough to read everything that was published after that.

I also like science books, especially biographies, and went I go to bed I usually read fiction (books about saving the world from impending disaster).

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The book describes a year off in France through the wines, food, culture and history of Burgundy, Provence and Dordogne. The adventures of a new family whose original plan never included the challenges of travelling with a toddler are intended to show that raising a baby and living the dream, while not easy, can be funny, enlightening and worthwhile. While this is a how-to for all those parents who plan to live differently, even if it is only for a short time, it is also an in depth exploration of what makes France famous for “la belle vie”.

Featured Author Maxwell Grantly

Screen-Shot-2014-11-19-at-19.00.40Featured Interview With Maxwell Grantly

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Maxwell Grantly is a non de plume for an anonymous school teacher, living in a small seaside town on the east coast of Great Britain. Although he has written nine short stories, he does not think of himself as an author. He is, first and foremost, simply a mathematics teacher. Maxwell does not write for an income and so he offers most of his work for free or at the lowest possible price that he can. He simply writes just because he enjoys doing so and for no other reason.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Maxwell has always been an avid reader of literature, from early childhood. However, it is only over the past year that he has begun to write short stories of his own.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Maxwell enjoys reading a wide variety of books of different genres. Being a school teacher, he reads a wide number of children’s books and has an extensive young adult library. Most importantly, he has always enjoyed the works of Roald Dahl and admires the ability of Dahl to break away from using a traditional mindset of typical children’s characters.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Maxwell’s latest book is called “Runs Like Clockwork” and is a steampunk-themed story for older children. It tells the tale of a mechanical clockwork toy named River Falcon, lost in the fictional town of New Babbage. The toy becomes stolen from his clock-maker inventor and then encounters a number of adventures in his attempts to escape and survive in his new hostile environment. Without giving too much away, the story has a tragic bittersweet ending that will touch your heart.

Many different people, events and circumstances combined to provide the inspiration for the story. Perhaps, most importantly, the author suffered the traumatic loss of his father to cancer in the weeks before the story was written. This private family bereavement must have shaped the plot of the story, even if it did so subconsciously.

Featured Author Jan Moran

Jan-Moran-smallFeatured Interview With Jan Moran

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Austin, Texas (yes, I still have a little drawl), went to graduate school in Boston, fled for sunshine to California (but I miss New Englanders), and now I’m living under the generally blue skies of San Diego. I also lived in Beverly Hills and the Palm Springs valley, spent a winter in Winnipeg, and travelled around the world.

Pets? I used to have an assortment of beloved cats and dogs, but with my dastardly allergies, it’s hard for me to be around them anymore–so sad!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
As a child, I was an avid reader. Writers were my rock stars! Books were my passport to exotic locales and fascinating characters. My first nonfiction book, Fabulous Fragrances, came out in 1994 and earned a spot on the Rizzoli Bookstores top ten bestseller list. I created in-store touch-screen apps for Sephora; these are now called the Fragrance IQ and Skincare IQ programs. I wrote and edited nonfiction material for the beauty industry for years. In 2012, I switched to fiction, my first true love.

As to early work, my first volume of poetry: fourth grade. My first novel: seventh grade. Both are, thankfully, forgotten. The UCLA Writers Program in Los Angeles was my next stop along the writing route. The RWA (Romance Writers of America) is also an excellent organization for learning and support.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Favorite authors include: Kristin Hannah, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Jennifer Crusie, Anita Hughes, Michelle Gable, Barbara Delinsky, Elizabeth Adler, Tatiana de Rosney, and Gerard Macdonald. A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford was an early inspiration, and I adore A Paris Apartment by Michelle Gable. I love Shanghai Girls and others by Lisa See and The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory. And who can forget Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, or War and Peace. There’s nothing like a smart, strong-willed heroine. For historical fiction, I also adore Allegra Jordan and Allison Pataki, and for modern series fiction, Melissa Foster and Rebecca Forster are excellent.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
BEAUTY MARK is the story of Scarlett Sandoval, an intellectual property attorney in Beverly Hills, by way of Spain. I had great fun with more of my favorite locations in this smart ‘n stylish romantic suspense saga. I had fun with the title, too. Beauty Mark is a play on words combining beauty and trademark with the more nefarious definition.

In the glamorous world of high stakes beauty and fashion, Scarlett Sandoval is in such demand that her firm sends private jets to shuttle her between Los Angeles, New York, London, and Madrid. In the midst of a critical trademark deal between a top fashion designer and an international cosmetic company, Scarlett is shocked to learn that in order to achieve her coveted partnership, one devious partner expects more than she is willing to surrender.

Her denial not only threatens to derail her hard-won career, but it also endangers her life and the lives of those close to her. Johnny, a handsome Beverly Hills restaurant owner she’s known all her life, offers his protection, but one fateful evening, their platonic relationship ignites.

When Scarlett’s world erupts and she discovers there is no way back to the life she once had, her friends help her through the turmoil. Can Scarlett mend her life, or has she made an irrevocable mistake in business, and in love?

Beauty Mark in the second book in the Hostile Beauty series, which follows a group of smart, stylish, entrepreneurial friends as they navigate the turbulences of modern life in the beauty business.

This #2 novel in the Hostile Beauty series was great fun to write. The competitive world of beauty and fashion meets the perilous arena of legal maneuvering and insider trading. This all made for fascinating writing.

Plus, I mined my memories of my travels in Spain — the arts and culture, food, people, and so much more. The scene in Cadiz? Yep, that’s what I unexpectedly encountered once when I landed there.

Add in great fashion, food, parties, and horses, and I hope you’ll have just as much fun reading Beauty Mark.

You’ll see familiar friends from the first novel, FLAWLESS, so you’ll learn what happens to Verena and Lance as their story continues, too.

Reviews:

“An engrossing view into the world of ‘beautiful people’ with an ending that will leave you wanting more.” – New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Melissa Foster

“Jan Moran is the new queen of the epic romance.” – USA Today Bestselling Author Rebecca Forster, Author of Expert Witness

Adrienne-Thompson-picFeatured Interview With Adrienne Thompson

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Ohio and raised in the great state of Arkansas. I’m a southern girl through and through, with an accent to match! I’m a music fanatic, an occasional football fan, mother of 3, grandmother of 1.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have been in love with reading since my mother introduced me to Little Golden Books as a small child. By the time I was 18 years old, I had amassed a collection of 300 books–mostly teen romance. I’ve been a writer most of my life, but up until 2009, I wrote mainly poetry. In 2009, I wrote my first novel. But I’ve always been a very animated and kind of dishonest verbal storyteller, lol.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors are James Patterson, Bernice McFadden, Terry McMillan, Barbara Joe Williams, Cathy Jo, and Nakia Laushaul. I love a good women’s fiction novel, but I’m also a fan of thrillers and suspense novels.

Life inspires me rather one particular person or author. I love observing people and their lives. I also love using my own life experiences and fictionalizing them.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Better, is an Interracial Romance (Black Woman/Native American Man) and women’s fiction hybrid. In Better, our heroine, Carla Foster, is still reeling from what she calls “the ultimate betrayal” of catching her husband in the midst of his infidelity. Now, seemingly stuck in marital limbo, she finally decides to move on with her life only to find herself face-to-face with a monster. As her life begins to crumble, she wonders if things will ever get better. Will Carla be able to find healing and eventually, love?

Tagline: She’s been through hell. He just wants to make things better… but will she let him?

It took about three months for me to complete this novel, but I’m a fast writer. I’ve written and/or completed 4 books this year, so far!

Featured Author Lois W. Stern

lois_charli_blueFeatured Interview With Lois W. Stern

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised on Long Island, NY. The week after I graduated from Barnard College, I married, and my husband and I moved to New Haven, Conn, where he attended law school and I became an overnight educator, teaching grade school in Cheshire, Conn. But LI beckoned both of us and we returned here as a young married couple, raised our family and are fortunate to have at least one of our sons and three grandchildren living nearby. We have no in-house pets but we do have two grandogs, who love overnights in our home and yes, sleep in our bed. If we are lucky, they leave enough room for us!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t a reader. Maybe I was born with a book in my hand – I’m really not sure. But I do remember when I started to write. When I was 4 ½ years old, I remember printing alphabet letters all over my newly papered bedroom wall and being punished for my efforts. Fortunately this inauspicious beginning didn’t dull my enthusiasm for writing! Years later, while creating the column “Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives” for an Internet webzine, I discovered my special niche of investigative journalism and put these same talents to work in writing my first full length book, SEX, LIES AND COSMETIC.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love books of fantasy that can move me to a different time and place for a short while. I also enjoy delving into non-fiction on most any topic that grabs my interest and broadens my knowledge base. But most of all, I love stories of real people, learning about their trials, triumphs and the fascinating things they have done with their lives.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Tales2Inspire ~ The Ruby Collection, (subtitled “Gifts of Compassion) is the fourth book in my Tales2Inspire collection. It is filled with stories of compassion flowing not just from humans, but from some of our furred and feathered friends as well. For among all living creatures, we see evidence of an emotional connection, and often a response, to others in time of need. Each story in this book is a winner from the annual Tales2Inspire international competition, anonymously selected by a jury of accomplished authors. Each of these non-fiction stories shows clear evidence of the gift of compassion – sometimes flowing from humans, but also from some of our furred and feathered friends. For among all living creatures we see evidence of an emotional connection, and often a response, to others in time of need. You will read sixteen amazing stories, including stories about:
. an injured eagle and a wildlife volunteer who form such a close bond that they begin to communicate in ways most mortals would consider impossible
. an incredible labrador named Obi, who wins over students at risk of dropping out of school, or worse yet, dropping out of life
. a nurse with a nurturing spirit gains the trust of an actively psychotic woman through music and humor, helping to transform her outlook and her life.
. a young girl determined to help the cause that stole her father’s life, now listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest person to run a marathon in each of seven continents
. Thirty plus years after being released from the Nebraska State Penitentiary, this once hardened criminal travels over 1500 miles to shake hands with the warden who helped him turn his life around
This is just a sampling of the sixteen inspiring stories you will find in this book.
Although these stories contains feelings of warmth, tenderness, sensitivity or concern for the plight of another, compassion needs to extend beyond simply feelings, to acting on those feelings in some positive way. And herein lies the powerful gift of each inspiring story in this book – stories of compassion fulfilled, actions taken and results achieved to satisfy the best that lies within us.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. I currently still live there with my almost 2 year old Xavier. We do not have any pets and I am going to keep it like that. I’m not really an animal person.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I dont remember a time when I didnt love to read. I love to see what kind of adventure reading would take me on. I started off with The Box Car Children and Baby Sitters Club. My love for reading grew. I started writing around the age of 10.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have many favorites but I think my stand out favorite is Terri McMillion. She is an awesome storyteller. I think I have loved just about every thing she puts out. My favorites by her has to be Disappearing Acts, Mama, and A Day Late and a Dollar Short. I don’t have a favorite genre simply because i love to read everything.
I’m inspired every day moments. Some are good some are bad. It seems like i can find a story where ever i look.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a Creative Flow company project called Literary Chick.
My story is about my life the good the bad and ugly. Some parts are true, some are false, while other just embellished. I wrote this story to show that just because you grew up in the projects, the hood, or ghetto you can be more than your surroundings. I wanted people to know that there are great people and stories in the heart of the hood.
I also have 3 other books on Amazon as well. No Love Just Love Making part 1 and 2 and also My Man Jamar written by myself and Coco Mixon.

DSC_0066-rev-3-copyFeatured Interview With Jo Ann V. Glim

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest on the island of Fidalgo in a town called Anacortes, Washington. It was an amazing place to spend a childhood in the 1950s. All kids were free to roam until dinner time because every mom was their own. We all knew we were safe. We enjoyed and respected the natural beauty that surrounded us. Sixty years later, even though life has taken many of us around the world, my classmates and I still enjoy a close bond and friendship.

Today, my husband and I (along with our rescued Scottie, Lucy) reside on the Suncoast of Florida (gulf side). Although different in so many ways, both communities “live the outdoors,” surrounded by water, beach-style living, and amazing neighbors.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was about 9 years old when I discovered Amelia Earhart. From that point on, I was hooked on reading adventures about real people.

I was always scribbling notes about something and being an only child, I had a head full of characters. The one that got me in trouble was the church mouse family I imagined during Sunday service. I think it was the giggling that caught me a “Mom talk” on the ride home.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
There are the established writers like McCullough (author of “John Adams”) and Indie writers like children’s author Mariana Llanos (Tristan Wolfe series and her latest “Staircase on Elm Street”) that have recently become favorite reads for me.

I love biographies and memoirs, adventures and history but I also like fiction: Dune, Harry Potter, The Hobbit. When I want to unwind, I prefer something lighthearted.

I just finished Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild.” I’m now reading Penny C. Sansevieri’s “52 Ways to Sell More Books.” For any authors reading this interview, I highly recommend Penny’s guide to help you plan your marketing goals.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Very excited to announce that “Begotten With Love” was chosen for FIRST PLACE – Biography (Published) at the Florida Writers Association 2014 Royal Palm Literary Awards banquet in Orlando in October.

After thirty years of research and travel to two continents, “Begotten With Love” became a sometime turbulent, sometime rollicking true story spanning one hundred-fifty years of American history and five generations of family. It brings to life each generation letting the reader live the experiences as the characters and plots unfold. As one of our fans put it, “It reads like fiction, but it’s not!” Trust me, you will not look at grandma and grandpa the same, again.

Featured Author Carol Fragale Brill

Carol-with-books-Mar14-004-smallFeatured Interview With Carol Fragale Brill

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Always top of my gratitude list is my wonderful husband, our marriage, and living in Victorian, seaside Cape May. I grew up in Philadelphia, but always had sand in my shoes and longed to live at the beach. I became a “Jersey Girl” about 20 years ago. No pets, unless you count the hummingbirds who visit the feeders I keep right outside my office windows so I can watch them while I write.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Like many writers, writing has never been my “day job.” For over 25 years, I was a Human Resources Leader in healthcare—climbing the corporate ladder, working 12 hour days, juggling work and the rest of life—many of you know the drill. Successful career, happy marriage, yet, there was something missing—I wanted more balance and purpose in my life.
Almost 20 years ago, my husband and I fulfilled a life dream to move to the Jersey Shore. After settling in our new home in Cape May, I started thinking about another long held desire. From the time I was twenty-something, I had wanted to write a book. Finally, in my forties, I joined a writing critique group and started my first novel, PEACE BY PIECE. I still had a day job, so it meant getting up early before work to squeeze in time to write and skipping other activities on weekends and days off to carve out writing hours. Writing gave me that purpose I craved and made the sacrifices worth it.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre to read and write is contemporary women’s fiction. My favorite author lists goes on and on. I’ve learned so much by reading authors including, Adriana Trigiani, Sue Monk Kidd, Michelle Richmond, Nicole Krauss, Ann Packer, Sue Miller, Jodi Picoult–and let’s not forget the Grimm Brothers who turned me on to stories as a young child. I often really enjoy debut novels and love discovering new authors to add to my list.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Set in Victorian Cape May, CAPE MAYBE is Katie’s story of love and loss—of the memories, addictions, and secrets that haunt mothers and daughters , and the power of hard-earned hope to create your own second chances.
Just as I was finishing my first novel, PEACE BY PIECE, Katie, the adolescent narrator in CAPE MAYBE showed up in my head with an urgent voice and story. It was a new experience for me to have a character appear almost fully formed and she was impossible to ignore. Reader’s agree that her spare and guileless voice is compelling. I wrote CAPE MAYBE as my creative thesis while earning my MFA at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Brendas-Cover-PhotoFeatured Interview With Brenda Mohammed

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. My father was an Educator and I had the privilege of attending the schools at which he was posted. I still live in Trinidad and Tobago with my husband.
Once I had seven dogs, but that was because my daughter, who loved dogs, refused to give away any of the pups bred by our female dog. She got married and left me with all those dogs, and I fell in love with them. However, they grew old and died one by one. I now have one dog and I really do not want another at this time in my life.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My father had a huge library of books and I was always fascinated by it. He had lots of children’s books and that encouraged me to read a lot. My sisters and I loved to read and we ran competitions to see who could read more books. i always loved writing essays at school. I gained a distinction in English Language in my Senior Cambridge School Certificate Grade II, and I believe it was because I wrote a fantastic essay. In my job at the Bank’s Corporate Division, before I was appointed as a Manager, I was required to write Business Proposals for clients for the signature of the Corporate Managers and for submission for approval by the Bank’s Head Office. I was told that it was because of my writing skills and the way I put across the points in the proposals that they were approved without much difficulty. I have never had difficulty expressing myself in any form of correspondence and so writing books was not difficult.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I mainly read Motivational books by John Hagee, Joel Osteen, and Marilyn Hickey. Now and again I read a good novel by a random author. I like mystery and drama. I am inspired by several factors in my writings and not by any particular person. I write books in many genres such as autobiographies, romance, mystery, suspense, memoirs, spiritual, travel, and I even write poems.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book was “Retirement is Fun – A new Chapter.” This book is a sequel to “My Life as a Banker – A Life Worth Living.”
It is the second stage in my autobiography. At first I was devastated by my sudden retirement in my still youthful days. The retirement age for women in the bank was at that time fifty five years of age. I was not yet fifty five when I had to leave because i was given two months pre-retirement leave. I learnt through my many experiences that retirement is a time to enjoy life, and I decided to write a book about it.
There were other exciting jobs and opportunities available to me and there was a world to see.
I made full use of every opportunity to travel the world.
Actually this book was written fifteen years after I retired from the Bank, because after fifteen years of fun, notwithstanding a bout with cancer, and a car accident, I have proved that when I retired from my first job, I definitely did not retire from life.

Featured Author Mistral Dawn

Lady-Laura-and-Kitts-21Featured Interview With Mistral Dawn

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a thirty-something gal who has lived on both coasts of the US but somehow never in the middle. Currently, I’m residing in the Southeast US with my kitty cats (please spay or neuter! :-)) where I work as a hospital drudge and attend graduate school. Taken By The Huntsman is my first effort at writing fiction and if it is well received I have ideas for several more novels and short-stories in the series.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’m dyslexic and I had a really hard time learning how to read when I was a kid. Timothy Zahn’s continuation of the Star Wars series is probably the reason I’m literate today. If my imagination hadn’t been captured when I was eight years old by the characters and universe that George Lucas created and Timothy Zahn expanded on it’s possible I wouldn’t have had the motivation to expend the effort it took for me to learn to read. Since that age I could usually be found with my nose stuck in a sci-fi/fantasy novel of some description. 😉

I didn’t start writing fiction until September 2014. The inspiration for my first book, Taken By The Huntsman, came from a dream I had after a rather spirited debate with an online friend about the nature of consent (and some other political issues I won’t bore you with). When I woke up I thought about the dream and realized it might make an interesting story (as well as provide me with a soap box ;-)). I texted a friend and asked her if she thought the idea had merit. She said she did and so I wrote the first couple of chapters and emailed them to her asking her to read them and tell me if she was bored yet. She was kind enough to say that she wasn’t bored and that she’d like to read the rest of the story, so I wrote it. The ideas for the next few books and short stories came from characters who came to me and told me that they deserved a story too, and it was my job to write them. So I will! 🙂

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
The Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Romance genres are my favorite because they provide an adventure and (almost always) a little excitement. There’s something about the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre that captures the imagination and takes you to a whole new world. That’s what I’m looking for in a story: an escape from reality. I read very little contemporary fiction, because I don’t want to spend more time in the “real world;” I want an escape. 🙂

My favorite authors are Karen Chance, Tracy St. John, Jeaniene Frost, Lois McMaster Bujold, Karen Marie Moning, Janet Kagan, Timothy Zahn, and Michael Crichton. To name a few. 😉

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The story is about a lonely, human woman (Cassie) who has been rejected for various reasons for her whole life and the Erlking, a hundreds of thousands of years old Fae, who has been Fairie’s “top cop” for all of his life. Both of these characters are lonely and isolated, and both of them have difficulty trusting others. They are united in an unbreakable, soul-mate bond created by a goddess, but only the Erlking can consciously feel this bond. While Cassie feels drawn to the Erlking, she cannot (as a human) consciously feel and identify the soul-mate bond so the Erlking must convince her to trust him and give their relationship a chance. Naturally, hilarity, hijinks, and adventure ensue.

As I said, the inspiration for my book came from a debate with a friend about the nature of consent, so there is a lot of ruminating by the characters about what constitutes consent. Taken By The Huntsman also introduces other questions about right and wrong. This isn’t done in manner to browbeat readers or proselytize to them, but in a way to make them think about and question their own views. Most of these questions are left open for the reader to answer for themselves, but my goal was to make people reflect on what they take as a “given” and under what circumstances various actions might be justified. Plus there’s quite a few steamy scenes. 😉

My major goal with this book was to entertain people and tantalize them with the “romantic moments,” but I also hoped readers might find a few ideas that would cause them to think about their own views. If Taken By The Huntsman causes someone to go “Hmmm?” even once while reading it, that would make me ecstatic.

Featured Author Wid Bastian and Michael Atkins

henry_kindle-2jpgFeatured Interview With Wid Bastian and Michael Atkins

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in Vegas in the 70s. That beautiful little town is now gone forever – I’m not a fan of the new, corporate mega-Vegas. I live now in Northern Utah at the base of a mountain in a little town called Providence. I love the mountains and the ocean equally. I have a dog, four cats, a lizard and other assorted critters my step kids bring home.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always been fascinated with books. I did not start writing until my early 40s and I did not pursue writing full time until a few years ago. Looking back, I was always a square peg in a round hole. I’m an artist, but it took me decades to figure that out.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Henry and Tom was Michael Atkins’ initial concept – I built the story on his foundation and expanded on his idea. I’ve been through a very contentious divorce and I am in a blended family so the issues Tom, Sydney, Jonas and Jessica deal with are very familiar to me. I love to scuba dive and to be on or near the ocean. I’ve seen whales many times up close and personal – above and below the water. I’m absolutely nuts about whales.

Henry and Tom, I hope, is a story that many people can relate to on multiple levels. On the family side, it’s tough to go through a divorce – even the smoothest and least contentious family breakups are incredibly difficult on everyone involved. That said, there is peace and happiness on the other side if everyone keeps love I their hearts and is empathetic more than selfish. On the whale/animal side, I wanted to write about the incredible intelligence and culture of sperm whales. They are not humans; we should not look at them that way. Sperm whales are intelligent, beautiful creatures with a complex inner life and an amazing culture. We can only glimpse that, of course, but I hope Henry and Tom leads more people to learn more about whales and appreciate them for what they are – a tremendous treasure.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in California and Virginia as a Navy brat so I am pretty well rounded. I currently live in Pascagoula Mississippi with my Husband, mother, and daughters. We also have a cat named Lexi. I work at Huntington Ingalls, where I have been a marine electrician for the past seven years. I have been a published author with Pink Kiss Publishing for the last three years. I have out two urban fiction novels called Tangled Web and Concrete Rose. I am currently working on my third novel as well as my Facebook Page Friends Against Verbal Abuse!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have had a fascination with books as long as I could remember. I read Disney junior books until I graduated to Ann. M Martin and Beverly Cleary. Also R.L Stein. I started writing when I was about twenty four. I actually lost my first attempt at a novel in a broken computer. That didn’t discourage me though. I started on Tangled Web and as soon as I finished that one my dreams were beginning to come true. Tangled Web was published on Christmas of 2011!!!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre to read currently is urban fiction. Some of my favorite authors are Eric Jerome Dickey, Tracy Divine, Mz. Jetson, Elois Thames, and Naleignhia Kai. I am very inspired by every author out there because of their drive to succeed! I enjoy networking and getting ideas from other authors and also sharing my ideas!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called Concrete Rose. It is about a teenage girl who moves from Africa to The United States with her family and the family of the boy that she is betrothed to be married to. When she gets to The United States and starts mingling with other children she sees how much more free the customs are and questions her decision to marry the person that her parents have chosen for her. She sees everyone living carefree and her life just seems like it will be dull, because once they marry, he wants to go back to Africa, where everyone admires and listens to him. He is like a voice of demand! But there is a lot of money at stake for her parents if she chooses not to marry him. This is a book that will have you on the edge of your seat wondering what she plans to do next!!!

Featured Author Luana Ehrlich

Luana-Ehrlich-400-pxFeatured Interview With Luana Ehrlich

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in the Midwest–Missouri and Illinois–and then, when I got married, my husband and I lived in Texas, Michigan, Indiana, New Mexico and also overseas in Costa Rica and Venezuela. Today, I live in Norman, Oklahoma, along with my incredible (and funny) husband. My daughter and my two grandsons live nearby. Although I’ve always had a dog or a cat, I’m sad to say I don’t have any pets right now, but I do occasionally get visits from my Sam, my granddog.

Norman, Oklahoma plays a vital role in my new book, One Night in Tehran, as this city is home to the Airmen Flight School where many of the 9/11 hijackers trained. Titus Ray, a CIA intelligence officer and the protagonist in my new release, lived in Norman while investigating the bombing of the Murrah Building in nearby Oklahoma City, and he returns to the city while on medical leave. As for dogs, you’ll have to read the book to discover the role a dog plays in this spy thriller.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I began reading spy thrillers at the age of eleven, when I picked up a book in that genre from my father’s stack of library books. I’ve been hooked ever since! Although I’ve been a freelance writer for several years and wrote a weekly column for a newspaper, I didn’t start writing my first fiction novel until my husband retired. Now, I write every day.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Since I have been reading mystery/suspense/thriller books since I was eleven years old, and there were times in my life when I was able to read this type of fiction every two to three days, I’ve been greatly influenced by the elements of a good read in this genre. I’m sure my style of writing has been shaped by Adam Hall, Daniel Silva, Nelson DeMille, Joel Rosenberg, Vince Flynn, Michael Connelly, Lee Child, and John Sandford.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
One Night in Tehran introduces veteran CIA intelligence officer, Titus Ray, who, after being hidden away in Tehran by a group of Iranian Christians after a botched mission, returns to the States determined to explore the life of faith he saw exhibited by these dedicated believers.

(Author’s Note: I was inspired to write this novel when I heard about Christians in Iran being persecuted, arrested and tortured. I asked myself: What would happen to a veteran CIA intelligence officer if he encountered the faith and commitment of a group of Iranian Christians? What if he made a commitment of faith because of their influence? What changes might he have to make in his career and lifestyle if he tried to live a totally different life, a life of faith?)

Back in the States and forced to go on medical leave, Titus learns he’s been targeted by a Hezbollah assassin. Now, while trying to figure out what it means to be a follower of Christ, he must decide if the Iranian couple he meets in Norman, Oklahoma has ties to the man who’s trying to kill him, and if Nikki Saxon, a local detective, can be trusted with his secrets.

(Author’s Note: Since Norman, Oklahoma has been at the center of several events involving terrorism–from the bombing of the Murrah Building on Oklahoma City to the 9/11 hijackers attending the Airmen Flight School in Norman–this city seemed the logical setting for a novel involving Hezbollah terrorists, sleeper cells and a mysterious Iranian couple. Add in a beautiful detective and a murder mystery, and it’s not hard to see why Titus Ray has his hands full when he arrives here on medical leave, trying to recuperate from his failed operation in Tehran.)

MaryAuthorFeatured Interview With Mary Dunlop

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hi everyone! I was raised in a small suburb, south of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. It was rural, clean, and pretty — a wonderful place to grow up.

I now live right on the island of Montreal with my husband and our beloved cat. My routine consists of running, reading, writing, and regular meditation. I like to meditate before settling in to write.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Many years ago, there was a book called “A Wrinkle in Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. At the time I read it, the novel’s teenage female character was a bit older than me; but I connected with her regardless and was astounded by the “realness” of that connection. It was at that point that I began to realize the power of books and the written word and, yes, I became fascinated with it. Also I knew that, one day, I would write a novel of my own.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Maeve Binchy–for the warm atmosphere she always created. One of the best ways to get cozy on a cold winter’s night is to curl up in bed with a hot cup of tea and a Maeve Binchy novel. She’s the only author of whom I’ve read several books.

I love books that prioritize love and connection. Even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes, that’s something that’s available to all of us, no matter what.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“The Power of Twin Soul Love” is short fiction romance, exploring the theory of twin souls (soul mates) and the reality of true love.

In his Symposium, the Greek philosopher, Plato, speaks of an allegory relating to the origin of the sexes — that, at one time, males and females were united in a single soul. “The Power of Twin Soul Love”, through its fictionalized story, offers an evolved version of Plato’s theory.

The following is an excerpt:

“Almost all of us have some sort of visuals or visual of our true soul mate, but rarely do we take the time to really get to know it. Gordo went on to explain that the essence of our true soul mate lies within each of us and relates to the conscious and unconscious qualities-the inner masculine and feminine energies-we each carry.”

Featured Interview With Chase Blackwood

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I never know how to begin these introductions. What to say? State a bunch of random facts? Instead I will simply paint a picture of a good day for me.
I wake up, do some solid writing. Eat a good breakfast, with my dog laying beside me, then my whole pack (wife, dog, and I) go for a walk on the beach.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was young when I discovered I enjoyed stories and writing. As for the fantasy genre, I became increasingly interested in it around the age of 12.
In fact, it was hard to get the pen out of my hand. I kept small journals full of notes for book ideas for whatever project I was working on. I would consequently find these notes years later cleaning out my room and realize I had only used a handful of them.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have many favorite authors, the list changes as I mature and depending on what I feel like reading. Recently, Patrick Rothfuss (although his latest novella wasn’t quite my taste), Wilbur Smith, Robin Hobb, and Scott Lynch.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Tears of a Heart is a labor of love. I’ve invested more time in developing this world, the overarching story line and the characters. I know where I want this story to go and have already plotted out the main story arc for the next few books.
Tears of a Heart is set in an expansive world (multiple continents), in which Imperium, the continent the book takes place in, is on the verge of war. It teeters on the edge as the protagonist unwittingly pushes it ever closer through innocent actions.

I have always loved to tell stories and I began early on in school and just continued with it. Thankful that my teachers encouraged my creativity and active imagination.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Kallypso Masters has not only given me great books to read that she has done but taken me and directed me throught the writing world.

A.L. Wood also has wonderful Rock Music reads that are spot on and you will want to read more from her. In addition she is one truly wonderful person that also keeps me writing daily with a smile.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I began with Rock Notes (Book One of the Heartbeat Series). A Series to have Six Planned Books. It is about a sexy rocker taken by one girl … Now where Fiction and reality clash is that during this begining writing of this first book, I also got to meet my real brother I never met to find he is a Metal/Rock vocalist of a popular band. So another story played out in real life. Love Notes will pull you into the Madison and & Rand’s relationship. And Music Notes after that, well Rand the vocalist tells his story and you won’t want to miss a word of his.
I am finishing up the last three books of The Hearbeat Series (First Beat, First Bass, and First Taste). I don’t want to say final either as you never know if these Heartbeat characters will come back in my mind to write more.

I also have another complete series The Crossing Series (The Knot Hole, The Passage and The Muse) to debut all together soon as well.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hi everyone, I was raised in Virginia and have lived in North Carolina since I was a teenager. My novels are versified, some romance and others only elements of romance. Between being an associate pastor’s wife, looking after aging parents and keeping a grandson, life is pretty hectic.
Writing inspirational books is one of my relaxing venues.

I have three novels out and two novellas. They can be found on Amazon at: http://www.amazon.com/Mary-L.-Ball/e/B007O97Y0E/ref=ntt_athr_dp_pel_pop_1/192-2517852-7109947

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always enjoyed reading, it started with Nancy Drew. (Oh my, I’ve told my age) LOL
When I quit the professional world to became a stay at home nana I started writing.
At first, it was the church newsletter and Christian articles. The passion to scribe just blossomed toward fiction stories.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Nicholas Sparks inspired me, but most of my reading now comes from the many talented authors online. I like to read any kind of novel that has an inspirational element to it.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I have two new books this month. A holiday novella, Christmas at Angel Ranch, out now on Amazon. I also have an inspirational novel, Redemption in Big Fork Lake scheduled for release Nov. 19, 2014. Below are the blurbs for both books.

Christmas at Angel Ranch

Kayla is a home designer for a well-known company, or was, until a police raid proves the decorating company is laundering money. The investigation shows her innocence, but she’s without a job, no prospects for employment.

To get away from the dishonesty surrounding her, Kayla returns home to the mountains of North Carolina to help with the family business until the New Year.

Angel Ranch is a hunting lodge that caters to elite hunters, and Reed Jessup is ready to trade in his corner office for a few weeks of R&R. He arrives with his rifle and a trophy buck on his mind.

When Kayla and Reed meet, two mistrusting hearts collide. Can love prevail, or will it take a Christmas miracle?

Redemption in Big Fork Lake

Can he be forgiven?

Only after Robert Turner hurts a woman does he realize how much of a hold alcohol has on his life.

For Robert, a chance meeting with an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor offers hope. A new devotion to the Lord and a relationship with Belle McBride gives him expectations for a better future.
His life appears to be on the right track, until he comes full circle with his past and faces the one mistake that haunts him daily.

wendyheadshotsquareFeatured Interview With Wendy Knuth

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I currently live in Arizona with my husband, the old, bald guy, and our two boys. We have a dog named Tucker, who was the inspiration behind the zombie dog, Wolfbag, but there is no resemblance. My boys and I enjoy making youtube videos aimed towards the younger audience.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading at a very early age and as a parent I am still a strong believer in early reading. We didn’t used to have 24 hour a day television and therefore we actually played outside a lot, and read a lot. I’m dating myself, but those were the days before cable tv and the internet, let alone video games and cell phones. Can you imagine!? I also started writing at a very early age. I requested a diary for Christmas one year and couldn’t wait to get it. Keeping a diary is an interesting thing, because reading it 20 years later almost seems as if you are reading someone else’s work. I can hardly remember most of the entries I made at an early age, let alone later ages, even though it is/was a day to day, first-hand account of goings-on. Very odd feeling.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Since I’ve written a children’s book, I’d have to say that I am inspired by authors who lay out a story that inspires not a lecture, but discussion, no matter how light-hearted it is. There are really too many authors to name. I also highly recommend reading numerous genres, as well as visiting the library and letting the little ones choose books for themselves, in addition to the ones adults choose to read to, or with, them. I also really enjoy books that include subject matter either in the wording or the pictures, or both, that have a little something for different ages. That way, both children and adults can enjoy them (and therefore enjoy them better together) and the book can be read again with new finds you didn’t catch the first time. For great examples on this I would have to turn to the movies and recommend Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Finding Nemo as great examples of what I am trying to convey.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The book I have written is called Moore Zombies: The Search for Gargoy. It is a 34 page children’s book illustrated by Brian Allen of flylanddesigns.com. Brian Allen’s drawings are amazing – check out his website! This is a good looking zombie family, with nice zombies who are afraid of humans, including: Baby Zom (small and strong with a cute little bow next to her partially exposed brain), Kamper (dirty little boy who likes to camp and say goofy things), Broheimer (preppy boy zombie who is very smart, as he is an avid reader) and Gothina (teenage girl zombie who is into Goth, and critter-inspired fashion). These kids love tomato juice and have a stay-at-home Mombie. This book took me approximately two months to write, and about 7 months to have illustrated. I did change some of the writing during the illustration process since I felt it would go better with the pictures.
