kevin-August-2016-v2Featured Interview With Kevin Douglas Wright

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania and grew up in Willingboro, New Jersey. I now live in South Florida. I do not have any pets, but I love dogs. Back in the day, I was just “ok with cats”…until recently… when I saw a viral video where a cat saved a young boy from being attacked by a vicious dog. Now, I love cats. Forever!

I recently produced, wrote, and directed the psychological horror film, “Royal Love Story From The Grave.”

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I became fascinated with books after I graduated from high school. I started writing in 9th grade.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors to read are Tony Robbins and Napoleon Hill. My favorite genres to read are mystery, murder, private investigator, suspense, thriller, detective, and short story. I’m inspired by film and television in my writings.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a short story called, “Murders at the Fountain of Youth”. What do you know about The Fountain of Youth? Did it really exist? Discover the story behind the Fountain of Youth. Where was it? Where is it today?

Take a trip back in time. This is the story of a struggling private investigator hired to solve a murder mystery, challenged to be fair, and trusted to save a village full of innocent people including her daughter.

It took me about one month to write this book. It is Book #2 of my ‘Mystery, Murder, Suspense, and Private Investigators’-series of books. Book #1 is called, “The Mystery and Murder of the Dragonfly’s Daughter”.

JO_HeadShot1Featured Interview With Jolyse Barnett

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in upstate New York on the shores of Lake Champlain, where I spent a good part of my childhood summers swimming, riding my ten-speed bike on winding country roads, and playing with a horde of cousins at family picnics. Winter was another kind of adventure, with skiing in the Adirondack Mountains, trips to the library to feed my voracious reading habit, and skating on a frozen pond near our home. After graduating from high school, I earned a degree in writing and moved to Long Island with my husband where we continue to live our happily-ever-after with our two active kids and pampered feline today.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was an avid reader from an early age, then discovered the thrill of storytelling in fifth grade after my teacher encouraged me to put pen to paper. Soon, I had notebooks filled with poetry and later with stories about teenage angst. Although I continued to write creatively throughout college and into adulthood, it wasn’t until my first child headed off to college and a BIG birthday loomed over me that I began to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a published author. It has been six-and-a-half years now, and I’ve yet to regret taking that leap of faith.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Ah, such a tough question. I enjoy so many authors and I read a great variety. Due to my day job as an elementary educator, I’m well-versed in children’s literature, and among my favorite authors and poets are CS Lewis, Roald Dahl, EB White, JK Rowling, Lauren Tarshis, Kate DiCamillo, Patricia Polacco, William Steig, Mary Pope Osbourne, and Edgar Allen Poe.
Aside from my work as a teacher, I enjoy reading primarily romance but also gravitate toward mainstream women’s fiction and commercial fiction such as those written by Tom Clancy, John Grisham, and David Baldacci. Two of my favorite reads this year so far—among many other stellar stories that brightened my life—are Emily Bleeker’s When I’m Gone and Marybeth Mayhew Whalen’s The Way We Wish Things Were.
I have to credit my curious nature and overactive imagination with inspiring much of my writing, along with my admiration for all those wonderful authors who wrote stories which in turn impacted my little world in a myriad of ways. You know, I kind of view writing as my way of showing gratitude to those who gave me respite in troubled times by paying it forward to other readers seeking a romantic escape.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Years back, I’d shared with my husband my dream of crafting a series with magic and travel similar to Mary Pope Osborne’s Magic Tree House Series, but with romance for adults. A few days later, we were traveling upstate for Labor Day weekend when he asked, “Hey, how about a magic suitcase?” That must’ve been all the spark I needed because five hours later, we arrived at our destination and my journal was filled with notes. Later, those notes became the outline for this romantic suspense/magical realism series set in exotic locales, which I’ve named Mystic Escapes. I adore blending reality with the mythological/magic element because I believe there’s an element of the supernatural, the unexplained miracles or happenings that occur in our everyday life that gives us hope for something beyond our existence.
Mystic Escapes Book 1 is One More Sunset, releasing on Monday, October 3rd. This story took me about seven months from idea to polished version, although I wrote the bulk of the first draft in eight days at my sister-in-law’s house following Hurricane Sandy.

In One More Sunset and subsequent Mystic Escapes books, Lysis and Elpida are the two ancients who provide clues for their kori, or young woman, in the hopes she’ll use them to earn her freedom from that which traps her in life. When the magical suitcase appears at her door, Abby eagerly escapes her past—in the form of an ex-boyfriend-turned-stalker. Soon, she’s on a fast-paced adventure from New York City to Key West where she falls for a kind, sexy stranger while staying one breath ahead of danger.

I chose Key West as One More Sunset’s primary setting because I view the romantic paradise as my home-away-from-home. I’ve traveled the Overseas Highway dozens of times, explored Old Town by bike and foot countless hours, learned the lore of Hemingway, and skimmed the island’s tropical waters by boat and Jet Ski. To me, Key West is the perfect destination to heal from a troubled past and start over. Of course, the past eventually catches up to Abby, and it’s only a matter of time before the red suitcase disappears…

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
By day, Toi Powell lives a double life like that of secret spy, working in New York City as an interactive digital advertising manager. Yet, under the cloak of night, she fulfills her soul’s purpose as a writer, passion pursuer and motivator. 10 years after finishing the initial draft of her first novel, Blood of a Queen, she pushed herself to no longer self-doubt, and to finally complete her book and self-publish.
Born in Jamaica, Queens New York to a family deeply rooted in music, Toi developed a love for music and art. Her humble upbringing enlightened her to important issues within her community. No matter how deep the struggles, it was apparent that there was healing in the power of art & music. Pairing the Blood of a Queen novel with her own original music written and performed by herself was a natural and unique idea for Toi. She’d never seen it done, so she was willing to be the first to explore this new frontier of literature, music and digital content.
By utilizing the 3D-augmented app, Layar, Toi gives the reader exclusive digital content like music, videos and updates to enhance the readers experience, simply by scanning the books cover. Working in the digital atmosphere has inspired her to bring popular technology to a demographic of readers who are eager to learn and experience a whole new world inside and outside of a book.
When she’s exploring new passions, Toi can’t help but to share and inspire those around her to do the same. She also takes joy in motivating young women and inspiring them to aim beyond the stars; becoming better, stronger and more compassionate individuals. Toi set out to build The T.O.I House where she aims to inspire others to take on innovation.
By launching her first fiction novel, Blood of a Queen, Toi brings to life unique circumstances through the eyes of her characters by using past experiences and common socio-economic issues within the urban community. She is releasing her debut fiction novel in summer 2016, video blogging her social book launch journey episodes along the way. She resides in Central NJ, never too far from close friends and her loving family.
“Knowing that our past choices have molded us into who we are and shaped our futures into where we stand, gives us the opportunity to embrace this miraculous moment of realization. This moment, if we let it, can be the catalyst that propels us into the people we choose to be moving forward.”

Featured Author A. Gavazzoni

AG_90-cFeatured Interview With A. Gavazzoni

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am from Brazil and I’m a lawyer and a writer…I love to dance, to work out, to read and to cook. I love to learn foreigner languages and culture ( I speak English, French, Spanish and Portuguese) and I travel abroad whenever I can. I love to know new cultures and to try different dishes. I love art, museums and history. I love animals and I have two dogs, two beautiful girls, Gaia and Juno.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I loved books before I could read them. My mom used to read to me, and I remember thinking each book was like a magic box, exposing me to a whole new world out there. When I finally learned to read at the age of six, I was already addicted to the stories found within the pages of books.
I started writing books when I was ten, but I was so afraid someone would read them. For some reason, I was embarrassed about writing down what I imagined. When I became an adult and started working as an attorney, I found myself constantly writing stories as part of my professional defense cases. Two years ago, I decided I would become a professional writer, and I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally be doing what I really love to do.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
So many marvelous writers have inspired me. To start with, there are the classical authors, such as Emily Bronte, Stendhal, Dumas, Saad Marquis and Margaret Mitchell. There are also quite a few modern ones—Marc Levy, Tom Clancy, Dan Brown, John Grisham, and Colleen McCullough—but I could list at least a hundred here…the poems of Alisson Matos, a Brazilian writer, and Baudelaire, Edgar Allan Poe…
I have no favorite genres at all. I will try anything, but I’m not a huge fan of horror novels.
All people—not just authors—inspire me to write. I love to observe people. I love to sit in a café, alone, and just watch the people who come and go… How interesting to imagine the lives of everyone who passes by. Some have sad eyes that make me wonder what kind of pain they take in their hearts; some seem amused and happy, and I think about what has brought a smile to his or her face. There is no one person like another. They are all unique. They are all inspiring.
But all that—people and things that have inspired my writing—is part of a post on my blog http://agavazzoni.com/blog/what-inspired-me-to-write-behind-the-door/

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Behind The Door is a psychological and erotic thriller. It’s a real roller coaster for the reader, as every page brings them a surprise, an unexpected detour. I can tell you it’s not predictable at all. It’s mysterious, sexy, and thrilling, and the reader is going to discover—if he dares to open the door—how many secrets and hot encounters hide behind it.

3Featured Interview With Amy Pattee Colvin

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado Springs, and stayed there until I left for college. (My mother still lives in the house in which I grew up from day 1.) I moved to Tacoma, WA for college, and after graduation I moved to Denali Park, AK for 8 years. I eventually moved back to WA, and now I live on the edge of the San Juan Islands and have the most kindhearted and friendly yellow Labrador anyone could ever hope to meet. She’s a great companion while I work on my book!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve loved telling stories since I was a kid, and even majored in creative writing (as well as communication theory) at the University of Puget Sound. I was the youngest in my family, and one of my brothers, 9 years and a day older than me, always seemed to like listening to my stories. After he went to college, I’d write him stories, complete with pictures I’d cut out from “Highlights for Children” or “Ranger Rick” magazines, then send them off every couple of weeks.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love to read mysteries and suspense novels… those genres are my “comfort reading”. I also really love true adventure stories, like “No Picnic on Mt Kenya,” (I climbed Mt Kenya once; I think that is part of my love for that book), “Out of Africa,” “Burton and Speke,” (a novel about the 1857 Burton/Speke expedition to find the source of the nile), and I most recently finished reading ” The Flying Carpet,” (written in 1932 about Richard Halliburton’s adventures exploring the world in a bi-plane).

Initially I didn’t think that inspires my own work, but in truth, I think what I love about all those stories is the willingness to embrace challenge and be truly present with who you are. I would love to have adventures like any of those characters, and an underlying aspect of all of them is courage to face the unknown, and to make the best of all situations.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My current book is Cultivating Compassion: Simple Everyday Practices for Discovering Peace of Mind and Resilience. Though this book suggests ideas for developing a compassion meditation practice, it is far from what one might imagine a book on meditation might entail.

This book is for readers who are looking for simple, practical, everyday suggestions on how to calm the mind, and become comfortable in their own skin. It is set up with 66 daily chapters (66 being the average number of days current research suggests for developing new habits) each of which contain an inspirational idea, self-reflection questions, and suggestions for daily action. Each chapter builds carefully on the last, and yet can be enjoyed individually.

So, what inspired me to write this? It stems from the desire to help people thrive in their lives. All of us face difficulties and distress at one point or another. Sometimes it becomes easy to give up and not remember to see the positive things in life. Sometimes we just want to shove challenging moments under the rug. But, in doing so sometimes those challenges fester. This book invites people to take a look at some of the challenging aspect of life and offers suggestions for how to do so with comfort and grace.

Ultimately I just wanted to share some of the ideas I’ve learned through decades of meditation retreats in order to help other people thrive.

Surprisingly, once I decided on the format of the book it only took about 3 weeks to write. The fine tuning took a while, but the essence of it came together really quickly.

self2Featured Interview With E.M. Denning

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in a small town in central British Columbia. I still live here. Local folks like to joke that once you’ve lived here, you’re stuck and can never escape, but the truth is I like it here. It’s a beautiful area and the people are lovely. It’s been a great place to raise my kids, and my fur babies. I have three kids, two cats, and a husband. My heart is full.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was eleven and my mom finally let me read one of her coveted Dean Koontz books. After much consideration on what title would be appropriate for an eleven year old, she selected The Voice In The Night. I was hooked. I wanted to grow up and write books. I originally set out to write suspense novels, but discovered that romance is what I truly enjoy writing. I love exploring different relationship dynamics. I’m a mush lover from way back.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Dean Koontz, Diana Gabaldon, Terry Goodkind, Michael J. Sullivan, Justin Cronin, Colleen Hoover, JC Emery, Nazarea Andrews, L. M. Montgomery, and Elliot Wake. One of my favorite books is Unteachable by Leah Raeder (formerly Leah Raeder, he now writes as Elliot Wake) The prose is beautiful. The writing oozes with atmosphere and I just can’t get enough of that book. When I grow up, I can only hope to write with a fraction of his flair.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a romantic suspense novel titled Measure For Measure. It’s about an up-and-coming author who is being stalked. It’s my first attempt at a romantic suspense and the reaction from some of the early beta readers is really, really, promising. I started writing it probably about a year ago, but hit a wall, got distracted, and forgot about it. At the end of May, shortly after I signed a contract with them, my publisher asked me if I had a romantic suspense to submit for an up and coming box set. I immediately thought of Measure For Measure. I kept little of the original book, made some changes to the material I did keep and then wrote the rest. It took me about six weeks to get it all done and ready to submit (lots of coffee was consumed in the making of Measure For Measure) but I did it. I’m super proud of it. I can’t wait for everyone to meet Millie and Ryker.

Featured Author Harry Martin

Harry_Martin_AuthorFeatured Interview With Harry Martin

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Born in 1967, I grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA. After getting married and having two boys, my family and I moved to the Roanoke, VA area, where we live today. My interests have been computers, writing, chess, and creating animations. When I was in high school, I was torn between becoming a writer or a computer programmer. Although computers won out, the desire to write stories never left me. Along with being a computer programmer, I have also taught computer skills, ranging from how to use Microsoft products to programming using Java. Mysteries and mystery novels have always fascinated me. The Hardy Boy mysteries were one of my favorites when I was growing up.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have enjoyed mysteries since I was in grade school and I started writing short stories when I was in high school.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Franklin Dixon’s Hardy Boys mysteries inspired me the most.
Any mystery whether it is in book form, tv series, or movie is enjoyable to me.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Escape World Peace” is a mystery about the end of the world and a politician that takes over, after many people suddenly disappear. He promises world peace but, as the main character Johnnie finds out, this politician is really after something else. Johnnie first encounters this new leader while being chased by an angry mob.

Strange things happen to Johnnie. For instance, he almost gets run over by a car that had no one in it. Suddenly he is not allowed into his work place or bank to pay his car payment. Two strangers approach him with a warning and his Uncle forbids him to socialize with the neighbors.

This book took me several years to write.

“Remembering September 11, 2001” is a poem, in e-book form, I wrote to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks.

I wrote this in a day or two for a class assignment I was doing, for art class. (I was studying to become a teacher, at the time.)

Featured Author Shaun Stevenson

Shaun-StevensonFeatured Interview With Shaun Stevenson

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Ah, the Pacific Northwest. Home of good coffee, evergreen trees, and rain. I don’t think there could be a better environment for an author. When I’m not writing, I do a lot of thrifting, pickleball, retro videogaming, and reading good books.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My great grandmother had a 1910 edition of THE WIZARD OF OZ, and when she passed away, she passed her set of L. Frank Baum books to my family. I picked up that old book as a second grader and devoured it. I loved the fantasy, the adventure, and I knew I wanted to tell those sorts of stories. In grade school, I was always the kid who wrote the seven page story when we only had to write two pages. I was the kid who spent extra time in the library, picking out a new book to read. The fascination has never stopped!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
One of my favorite sections of the bookstore is always the Middle Grade fiction. I love writing in that genre, and I love reading it too. Brandon Mull, Rick Riordan, P.W. Catanese, E.J. Patten, Jerel Law — I really love them all. Fantasy, adventure, action, a quest, I eat that stuff up for breakfast.

However, I also enjoy a good drama. Melody Carlson’s THE OTHER SIDE OF DARKNESS is still one of my favorite novels. I like diving into those sorts of characters and exploring where they’ve been and where they’re going.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest novel, THRONES #1: SECRET OF THE LOST KING is a fantasy adventure about three kids being hunted by the Emperor of the kingdom. Their only hope at freedom is to find the missing king who disappeared twelve years ago. If they can find him, they might stand a chance at defeating the evil gripping the land. However, this missing king has a secret — a devastating one that he’s hidden along with himself. And when that secret comes to light, nothing will ever be the same again.

THE MOUND is a unique, multi-faceted paranormal romance thriller about a young couple who live through harrowing assaults on their bodies and senses. On their wedding day, the bride’s parents gift the couple with an abandoned, neglected, ram shackled, century-old house on a large plot of land. The house had a widespread reputation of being haunted. The bride’s parents once lived in the house and experienced many hauntings that soon made them flee to safety. Their wishes for the newly-married couple were that they not move in, but sell the land. However, the young couple decide to refurbish the house and live in it. One peculiar unsettling sight was a huge mound that rose high above a vast level wasteland owned by the state adjacent to their property. Shortly after moving in to their renovated house they would learn about the history of the eerie mound, and soon begin seeing ghosts in their house that don’t seem especially threatening at first. And then shock sets in when they become victims of sexual abuse and brutality wielded by a devil spirit. THE MOUND is a story that embodies the belief that love lives within us beyond death for infinity.

picture1Featured Interview With Lashonda Beauregard

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Lashonda Beauregard, I’m from Alexandria, La, but I’ve lived in Lafayette, La where I attended college. I’m a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with a Bachelors of Science in Apparel Merchandising/Business but writing and music is my passion. I used to be really shy. I was actually voted for most bashful, shyest girl, back in high school. I’m the author of the book The Harlem Renaissance Time Traveler’s Diary, which is my first published book. In addition to writing stories I also enjoy writing poetry and music. I don’t have any pets, but I always loved dogs.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I enjoyed reading at an early age. I used to read mystery, fiction, and inspiration books that I would get from the book store and the library. There used to be this book exchange store that I would go to when I was younger. I always loved going to the book store and to the library. There’s something about an old book store, you never know what you will find. I still like to dig through books and I get excited when I find a book that looks interesting and I can’t wait to open it and start reading. I always loved music. I knew a lot of songs, so at a young age I started writing short songs and rhymes. My love of music helped me appreciate poetry so much more, because song lyrics are really just like poetry. I began to get more into writing poetry while I was in college. I was writing poetry and songs before I wrote my first published book.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I feel that there are so many talented authors and great books, so I can’t really say who my favorite author is. I enjoy reading historical fiction, literary fiction, I also read a little science fiction. I’ve always liked mystery books such as Sherlock Holmes. I like to read christian fiction stories and inspirational books by T.D. Jakes and Joel Osteen. It’s good to start your day by reading or listening to something positive. Of course I’m inspired by the all the great writers and authors that where writing before I even started. I thank God for giving me the ability and passion to write, because I really enjoy writing. I think that it is a wonderful feeling to write something, to take something from within and be able to share it with a lot people. You can inspire, move, and encourage people just by what you write down with a pen and paper.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My book is called The Harlem Renaissance Time Traveler’s Diary which is a fiction book. The main character in my book, West Barrington, is a musician from 1926 Harlem, awakes in 2016 Harlem after falling asleep on the eve of 1927. During West journey in the future he discovers the reason behind his time travel.
I was always interested in the Harlem Renaissance. I was drawn to this period of time because it was such an important time for African Americans and in music. There were a lot of talented writers and musicians during The Harlem Renaissance. In addition to being a writer I also loved music and the love of music also caused me to be curious about this period of time. I really enjoyed writing this book. Because I’ve always loved music, it was fun to walk in the shoes of a musician, which the main character of my book, West Barrington is. I’m thankful that I was creative with the characters in my book and I feel that the audience would really like and connect to the characters. If you’re a fan of time travel books, science fiction, mystery, historical fiction, a music lover, you would love this book. I feel blessed to be able to write as well as have a fiction book published that is based on The Harlem Renaissance.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
David started writing as a hobby in the 1980s. He interviewed Lynne McGranger, the Australian actress from Home and Away, when she was appearing in pantomime in Torquay, Devon. Surprisingly, his interview with her was published in People’s Friend, a UK magazine. Since then, he decided he would spend more time on writing.
He wrote his first poem, God’s Garden, which is featured in the Best Poems and Poets 2012.
Though he’ll forever be an Englishman at heart, he now lives in Mexico with his 3 dogs, Chula, Sooty, and Benji.
If he’s not working on his latest story, you can find him walking his dogs or watching Discovery channel.
David says that he and Bear Grylls have something in common: adventure.
David’s adventure is writing books!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always been interested in books. I started writing in the 1980’s.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I like reading paranormal stories, anything to do with things that are difficult to explain, so these authors inspire my writing.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Hasta Mañana is a story based on real life events and is about a person who was murdered because he was involved in an argument with the narco who controlled his town.
After the funeral, his partner and family seek the help of a lawyer, from the city, to start an investigation into his death.
Not surprisingly, they come up against many obstacles – drug dealers -corruption within the legal system – falsified death reports, and friends of the victim who are afraid to tell the truth!
The story reflects the REAL Mexico and not the Mexico you see on travel programmes.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Raised by two mothers on the Lower East Side in New York City, I grew up in a home full of books, and always dreamed of being a professional author. (My last name is even pronounced “writer”!) The city’s diverse and ever-changing culture has influenced my work, but it became too hectic and expensive to live there as a creative artist. As a child, I fantasized about owning a Victorian house with a tower and a bay window in Western Massachusetts, where our family used to take vacations. Well, now I do! The cemetery across the street is a good place to walk off writer’s block.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been losing (or finding) myself in books from my earliest childhood years. Before I could write, I dictated poems to my parents about princesses and magic. Poetry was my first genre. I began publishing it professionally as a high school senior when one of my poems was reprinted in Best American Poetry, and other publications soon followed in journals such as Poetry and The Lyric. In my 30s, thanks to greater life experience and longer periods of time to write, I started learning the craft of fiction. Since 2001, my husband and I have operated WinningWriters.com, an online resource site for creative writers. Judging literary contests teaches me so much about the qualities of good writing.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genres at the moment are gay literary fiction and M/M, graphic novels, poetry, feminist and queer liberation theology, and science fiction. Authors who inspire me include the poets W.H. Auden, Anne Sexton, T.S. Eliot, Mark Doty, and Ariana Reines, and fiction writers Alexander Chee, Donna Tartt, George Saunders, Pat Conroy, and Wesley Stace. See more of my book recommendations on our WinningWriters.com useful resources pages:

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Two Natures (Saddle Road Press, 2016) is the spiritual coming-of-age story of Julian Selkirk, a fashion photographer beginning his career during the 1990s AIDS epidemic in New York City. Though success comes easily to him, he struggles to feel worthy of love because of his abusive childhood and social prejudice. At the time I started this book, my Christian community was being torn apart by the debate over affirming LGBTQ relationships and identities. Standing up for Julian made me clarify what I believed about love and knowing God for myself.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I live in North East Victoria with my husband and two young children. I grew up in the city mainly, but now live in a regional town and love country living.

We have 4 chickens and I used to have a horse until he passed away at a ripe old age. We will have horses in the future.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember! More often than not horse stories and as I grew older, Christian fiction and non fiction and finance books.

I have always enjoyed writing, but started seriously writing around 2003 or so. It wasn’t until 2012 that I was first published.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading Christian romances and horse related stories, so Lauraine Snelling, Francine Rivers and Tamera Alexander.

I love reading a good story and any that I have enjoyed inspire me to write stories that others will enjoy.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
B and B is set in Australia and focuses on a thirty-something male who isn’t a fan of people. He’s more than happy to focus on the horses at the trail riding place where he works. A new cook and her daughter are soon hired for the business and he finds himself drawn to her, in spite of himself. She isn’t interested in romance, she just wants to carve a future for her and her daughter.

Website-avatarFeatured Interview With Des Birch

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Limerick, Eire, but I came to England when I was a baby. I lived in Buckinghamshire until I was ten and then moved to Norfolk. I raised two children, on my own for the majority of the time. I spent a few years living in Europe: Holland, Germany, and Spain, which was where I wrote the Diary of an Innocent. I married Julie eight years ago and we now live in Norwich. Since Our respective children have left home, we live with two stuffed elephants who, coupled with a fossilized shark tooth, sometimes help me to write. People see me as a little crazy; can’t think why.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was born with stories inside my head. I learnt to talk so that I could share them with my friends. Then I learnt to write and I found that I could share these stories with many more people. It is an ambition of mine to let people see the natural world, just as I see it.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Shakespeare has to be top of the list, but I don’t follow any one author. I am a searcher; always looking for that one book that gives me something extra. As for genres, I read most, although I’m not as keen on science fiction.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Beyond Dark Waters is an exciting adventure for young adults, which not only entertains but seeks to educate. It mulled in my mind for around two years, until it was complete. Then I wrote it in around 6 months. Here is the story;

From being cast out from the group to losing his way in the dark lake at night-time, Ben will never betray his friends. Even when he feels a vicious fang slowly piercing his flesh, he knows what he is doing is right. He will never submit to the bullies, racists or indeed anyone who tries to steer him from the path he is taking. Ben is growing up very quickly and soon he gains many followers. This leads to a multitude of challenges and to one of his friends giving his life for Ben. As an eleven-year-old, he manages to avert a war and bring pride to different communities. For Ben, falling into the lake and entering into different species presented many challenges, but the rewards will stay with him forever. Beyond Dark Waters plots a young man’s rite of passage into adulthood, seen from the viewpoint of different species in and around a lake

I was lucky enough to win the ePublishing Writers Award of Merit for this book. This is what they had to say:

Beyond Dark Waters by Des Birch presents a totally original story precept. The author succeeds in weaving facets of life that all face including fear, misunderstandings, courage and compassion. The main character is transformed into the necessary forms to understand how all of life is connected. It is rare to find a book that can be highly recommended by many. Beyond Dark Waters goes beyond this expectation and should be mandatory reading for all people.
Beyond Dark Waters is hereby recognized for story originality, depth of interwoven plotlines and delivering a significant message during the rights of passage into adulthood. Des Birch has achieved an accomplishment with this book as well as other published works and this has earned him the ePublishing Consortium Writers Award of Merit.

me2Featured Interview With Gloria Oren

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was adopted at birth and discovered this at the age of four thanks to a teenage neighbor. I lost my father on my eleventh birthday and my mother at age twenty-three. Two months later, I married and shortly after began raising my own family.

Within the year I became a mother and named my son, Chanan, after my deceased adoptive mother. Sixteen years later, I learned it was also the name of my biological maternal great grandfather’s name, too.

My second son, Shai, was born during a 1983 doctor’s strike. He could not hold his weight. The fear of losing him motivates me to search for my roots, or at least my medical history despite warnings that the effort is in vain and meeting obstacles wherever I turn.

Moving to Seattle, Washington in 1985, I discover that I am pregnant again resulting in the birth of my daughter in February 1986. In July 1990 diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, I undergo two months of radiation treatment followed by remission. I realize that I am given a second chance and am again motivated to search. With each additional medical setback, my motivation to search grows.

From a rabbi, I learn that my birth mother was from Nova Scotia, Canada. However, an aunt tells me it was Montreal and her first name is MARCIA. Meanwhile, my birth mother goes to New York to get a copy of my birth certificate but goes home empty handed after making the mistake of telling who she really was.

My birth mother seeks help from a cousin’s husband. Eight days before my forty-first birthday YEHUDAH locates me through my father-in-law. He tells me that my birth mother is his wife’s cousin and that she’s waiting for a call from me. I make the call. I speak with my biological mother for the first time in my life. That same day I speak with my grandmother.

I wrote about all this in my memoir. Bonded at Birth is a story of loss, survival, determination, and persistence covering sixteen years of searching and nearly forty-one years of separation. Many coincidences appear along the way. Years of surviving cancer and overcoming other health issues, an inexplicable dream, and finally being found bringing closure and reunion with her birth families.

I’m a dog lover and had three dogs enter my life. I am currently seeking my next canine friend.

I am the the mother of three grown children, and lives with her husband of thirty-seven years and one of their sons.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was fascinated with books since I was about six months old. I would look at the pictures. When I learned how to read, books seemed to be glued to me. I read all the time. In fact, the library had trouble keeping up with me.

My journey as a writer began years ago. My first published piece was a poem in a camp newsletter. I seemed to be writing something all the time. It strengthened during the “Breaking Into Print” course.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors are Belva Plain and Jodi Picoult. I read memoirs, nonfiction, and fiction. Fiction has to be either family sagas, stories based on true stories, or else wise interest me.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Gloria Oren’s adoption memoir Bonded at Birth: An Adoptee’s Search for Her Roots is a story of loss, survival, determination, and persistence. It covers one state, three countries, and two continents. It covers sixteen years of searching and a little over four decades since her first adoption. After growing up under the umbrella of secrecy, Gloria sets out to find her birth mother with all she knew about her: she was a Jewish teenager. Despite being told by anyone and everyone that it would be an impossible feat, her determination and motivation increased. Learning her birth father’s name upon reunion with her birth mother and a short time later that he passed away eight years before led to her getting involved in genealogy and through this research medium she discovered that her first cousin seven times removed was Col. William Prescott of the Battle of Bunker Hill fame and more. Seven years later her story is brought full circle.

Bonded at Birth will interest adult adoptees who wish to search but hesitate, adoptive parents confronted by their adopted child’s wish to search,, and by birth parents who fear searching not wanting to intrude on their biological offspring’s life. It will attract memoir readers who enjoy a unique story. And couples contemplating adoption will learn the damage secrecy can lead to, and with hope, this book will ensure that they will be the ones to talk to their adopted children about their adoptions.

David-Hammerstein-Mar-2016-PhotoFeatured Interview With David Hammerstein

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Washington, DC where I grew up. My parents fled Nazi Germany. Although I had lived a tranquil and sheltered childhood, I always sense the upheaval my parents had experienced in Germany.

I attended Colgate University where I majored in psychology and German, having spent my junior year at the University of Vienna. I studied finance at the University of Chicago.

During my first career, I advised institutional investors such as pension funds, endowments and foundations. In 2013, I retired early to pursue my second career in writing. I focus on Jewish themes. In March 2016, I completed my first book, Kelev’s Journey, a Jewish Dog Wanders Home. Our family once had a dog, a lively American Eskimo named Snowball. Snowball helped inspire my book.

I currently live in Pittsburgh with my two children and three grandchildren.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I became enamored with books at the age of three or four when I started browsing shelves of books that my father saved when he fled Germany. I vividly recall the books with old German type. My parents bought an encyclopedia set when I was nine. These volumes intrigued me. I probably read the entire set during childhood. I focused on history and geography.

I began writing at the age of five when I entered first grade.

During my career in investment management, I wrote many educational papers about investment issues. I began to write a book about the institutional investment management process, but I found it difficult to finish it. I abandoned the investment book project.

After I retired in 2013, an acquaintance who had observed my vivid imagination suggested that I try creative writing. The notion of writing fiction had never occurred to me; I thought I lacked the interest and talent. But I began to write, and the words flowed. I wrote about a Jewish dog named Kelev (Hebrew for “dog”) who embarks on a journey to dig up his roots. I conveyed the Jewish experience through a dog because I believe that the dog’s innocence reflects the purity of spirit to which Judaism aspires.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My early interests focused on history, travel and cultural issues. During my working career, I read extensively about economics and finance. I have recently added novels to my reading list. I enjoy books by Michael Lewis, particularly The Big Short. A recent favorite is The Temple Bombing by Melissa Fay Greene.

My parents provided the most inspiration for my writing. I admire their idealism and faith, despite their trauma from being uprooted from their homes in Germany.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
What does it mean to be a good Jew? I explored this question by writing about a Jewish dog who explores the roots of his faith.

Several years ago, I witnessed a seeing-eye dog—a black Labrador retriever—lead a blind woman across a busy intersection. Other pedestrians’ casual demeanor contrasted sharply with the dog’s intense focus on leading the woman to safety. That scene touched me deeply. It provided the idea for Kelev, the black Lab in my book.

Few humans feel the unconditional devotion to G-d that Judaism calls for. But it occurred to me that appreciation of a dog’s innocence, and his unconditional devotion to his guardians, can help guide us along the path to a deeper Jewish life with its ideals of benevolence, compassion, tolerance, and charity. In Kelev’s Journey, I convey the Jewish experience through a dog’s eyes. I believe that a dog’s innocence reflects the purity of spirit to which Judaism aspires.

When Kelev learns about his Jewish heritage from his beagle buddy Schmalzie, he embarks on a spiritual journey. Nosing through a thicket of thorny questions about Judaism in a quest to heal the world, Kelev becomes a leader among local animals, resolving disputes and helping neighborhood cats and dogs discover their own Jewish faith. His exploits range from facing off against a tough Doberman named Shlimazl to making a connection between Borscht, the Russian bulldog, and the beautiful golden spaniel Schmoozie, a “Jewish-American Puppy.”

I wrote the book in six months.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born, raised and continue to live in Redondo Beach, California. In short, I am a beach girl. Any day that includes a walk along the shoreline is a great day for me. I live for a good sunset and love to have my toes in the sand and surf. Our dog is long since gone and so my walking partners include my husband, kids, sisters and friends. If I’m not writing, walking on the beach or traveling – I’m sewing or quilting my day away.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have loved to read since I was a little girl. My mom used to drop my three sisters and I off at the library park in the morning and pick us up at days end. Our long days were made all the more tolerable, interesting and fun as I learned to read to and with my sisters. We all liked different genres so boredom was not an option!
Although I wrote newsletters and articles all throughout my career in education, I did not write anything publishable until I retired a few years ago. I started off in non-fiction writing parenting books and running a parenting website www.project-parenting.com and quickly gave in to my desire to write a non-fiction series. I’ve always had a fascination with witchcraft and so The Witches of New Moon Beach became my first fiction series. So much fun!

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I am an eclectic reader, I love to vary my reading genres. However, right now I am enjoying Amanda M. Lee and her witch stories, Rebecca Forster and her women’s thrillers, Amanda Lee and Paula Hawkins for their mystery stories and Eric Czuleger for his PsyFi books. I am really into mysteries and thrillers right now. I enjoyed and found inspiration when reading Amanda M. Lee’s quirky witch stories. Love the freedom she takes with her characters.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest books are a series entitled The Witches Of New Moon Beach. I have had so much fun creating this beach town, modeled after my home town of Redondo Beach. New Moon Beach is a charmed hamlet by the sea. But when Olivia Merriman returns home from college to open her dream shop, Mystique Creations, the entire town erupts in magical chaos. Happy to be reunited with her sorceress sisters – Constance the baker and Harmony the town mayor, Olivia is determined to forget Jonathan Maxwell, the man who broke her heart. Unfortunately life gets in the way as witches seem to pop up everywhere, ghosts move into her home, her magical cat has plans of her own and her father is determined to get in Olivia’s way.
As if that’s not enough, someone is brewing up a plan to ruin the dream future of Mystique Creations. A fancy resort is being built right on her beach and is sure to destroy her brand new shop. And when Olivia finds out that her ex-boyfriend is leading the construction team she takes matters into her own hands. Not known for her spell casting talents, Olivia Merriman stops New Moon Beach in its tracks when her spell goes terribly awry.
Just how much trouble can this young witch get herself into? It may take more than just a little morning magic to set it right; especially when an evil wizard steps in.

If you love the beach and witches you’ll love the Merriman sisters and their hometown of New Moon Beach!
I started writing this series about nine months ago and have worked non-stop (accept for two weeks in Florida) since. I can’t tell you how much fun it is to create characters and to bring them to life. If you know Redondo Beach, you’ll recognize the bakery, coffee shop and more. I encourage you to jump right in and enjoy my little beach city by the sea.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Florida, a native who never crossed the state line until I turned twenty-one. Since then I’ve lived in four other states, and at the present reside in the Midwest. Married for twenty-six years, we have two children who also ride motorcycles. Other than Harleys, horses are my passion, and for a time I had a small equine rescue ranch. At this time I have no pets, but do have a couple of ‘Iron Horses’ who chomp at the bit out in the garage!
I write non-traditional Biker Fiction with very unique storylines, and a much different feel than the traditional books about bikers. One look at my reviews and you will see that my readers have enjoyed a new and different reading experience. This would be the perfect time for interested readers to pick up one or more of my books, especially the trilogy’s, as I am having a ‘Back to School Sale’ and each of my books have been reduced to just 0.99! (This week only!)

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Okay, I’m about to date myself here, but the truth is I was hooked at ‘See Spot run!’ I devoured my elementary school library and it only got worse from there. I wrote and published my first book in mid-summer 2014. At this time I have eight published works and three in progress.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Tolkien and King. I’ll read anything, but I lean towards Fantasy and Suspense. Thus far, my characters and storylines have begun from life experience. You know, the things we’ve done, people we’ve known, events we’ve attended, things we’ve said and heard. Once a memory kicks my imagination into gear, the ride is on!

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Brenna’s Club, the third and last book of ‘The Brenna Series’, which is a unique take on MC Romance, Erotica. The passion is raw and fierce, and can stir unexpected emotions as the story unfolds. My advice is to read the reviews before you commit to this one!

Screen-Shot-2016-08-18-at-8.38.18-AMFeatured Interview With Tiffany Dingley

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Rhode Island and raised in Florida, where I live now with my family. I currently have a pet dog named Boo; he’s a Pekingese and Poodle mix. He can be a little crazy sometimes but is absolutely adorable.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
From the time that I could read, I was obsessed with it. I have always been the type to check out four or five books and finish them in a week. In doing so, I learned a lot about not only book structure but the world around me in general. I wrote short stories and poems even as a little girl, which turned into lengthier and more detailed works and I’ve grown.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Aligning with my varied interests, I enjoy several different genres, and what I read often depends on my mood. There’s a good chance I’ll always have some murder mystery or science fiction novel around. Alongside this, I always enjoy heavily researched books having to do with health and the human brain. Psychology has always fascinated me. The only other big topic that I can think of off the top of my head is minimalism. I really resonate with this concept, and read about it often; seeing different perspectives and applications of a simplistic lifestyle always has me engrossed. To sum all of these things up, I will pick up anything that could possibly expand my perspective. Some authors I particularly enjoy are Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ryan Nicodemus, and Joshua Fields Millburn.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My first and latest book is titled Engage, Enlighten, Evolve and was inspired by an extremely long car ride… Over the last summer I went on a trip with my family that involved a 24 hour car ride, which pretty much eliminates any distractions that were preventing me from actually embarking on the long term goal of writing a book. I had always wanted to pull my thoughts together and put them out there but never seemed to find the right scenario. Once I started though, I kept working and editing for months.
