Featured Interview With Maria Retana
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is María Retana and I was born in the Island Cuba. I received a B.A. in Spanish and Comparative Literature from the University of California, Riverside. I am the author of more than twenty bilingual children’s books. In December 2008, The International Reading Association and The Cochise Area Council awarded my first literacy award. I live with my husband, Guillermo, in Tucson, Arizona, USA.
I am well known for my bilingual English and Spanish children’s books. I have published picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels. The genres I have written under are: Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Fantasy, Fiction, and Narrative Nonfiction.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always been fascinated by books! My first book The Pig that is not a Pig/El cerdo que no es cerdo. was published in 1996. Although the original version was done in black ink it is now available from Amazon in full color and illustrated by Salva Ferraando.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Two people have been my inspiration in my writing career: My storyteller, my grandma (Mamaita.) A few of my books are based on the legends, and stories I heard as a child sitting by her side in Cuba my native land.
In High school I had the privilege to have an excellent English teacher that introduced me to Agatha Christie the English detective novelist and playwright. Along with my grandma she was my inspiration for becoming a writer. I dedicated my January (2023) graphic novel titled Miles & Lee and the Ghosts from the Lighthouse/Miles & Lee y los fantasmas del faro to her.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Tender Memories of my Childhood/Recuerdos tiernos
de mi infancia is a bilingual (English and Spanish)
nonfiction picture book. It will transport
the reader to Cuba at the time when the author was
a child. This Cuban holiday season story of the
1960’s is tasty, colorful, and reflects not only Cuban
traditions but other Hispanic countries as well.
