Featured Interview With Roger B. Burt

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
For some time now I’ve been sitting here trying to figure out how to answer these questions. Naturally I was born in one place but after that my life became a series of awakenings and developments. I’ve lived in New York (as a child transiting between yuppies and great working class buddies), college was in Michigan (a major component of the sixties revolution was born on our Ann Arbor campus), graduate school at Duke in North Carolina (as the civil rights struggle exploded) then on to Maryland where I worked in inner city Baltimore poverty while living in a spirit lively glorious rural valley. Forays into Europe from an early age opened the world to me and a fifteen year adventure in the Caribbean confirmed my world citizenship. Now I live peacefully on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
While there have been marked demarkations in my life I do not define most of my life in terms of specific events. Books are part of opening the world and breathing diversity into our existence. I’ve written off and on throughout my life and the writing covered fiction and nonfiction. The books can be seen on my author page at Amazon. The Caribbean adventure is spelled out on my Word Press blog, caribbeandreamblog.com. Presently I address the world through my blog cuspofreality.com

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I don’t have favorite authors. I forage in the world of books. In fiction I lean toward fantasy and anything which is imaginative and intriguing. In nonfiction I cover the waterfront including such things as the real lives of ancient Amazon warrior women in East Asia or the possible future of our economy in postcapitalism. Presently I’m taken by our national crisis and the import of a world which is hanging on the edge of another catastrophic era. These latter real world issues are feeding my present writing.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Throughout my entire career as a psychologist I’ve been fascinated by mythology. In the turmoil of the 1960s I became an enthusiastic supporter of the beginning of the modern day movement to empower women. Recently these two things came together in my mind and weaving them in a work of fiction was irresistible.

More recently the work to end the subjugation of women has become insistent. What fascinates me is that at once we saw significant benefits for families, communities and countries. It is just possible that we may be seeing something which will be crucial as we enter a period of marked social and environmental crisis. And so I wrote of the Tethyan people composed of women living in the sea, on land in families devoted to stewardship and justice and warrior women called the Andromeda.

Our opening lead character is a young woman devoted to providing micro loans for third world women. She thought herself to be alone without a family. And then she learned she was from a Tethyan family. The shock from the import was more than significant. And from there we view the details of the people and their struggle. I thought it a trilogy. The first book Gaia’s Majesty-Mission Called:Women in Power has been published. The second book is advanced and there is a draft of a third. And now it seem a fourth book is becoming insistent.

Featured Interview With Cendrine Marrouat

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hello everyone!

My name is Cendrine Marrouat and I live in Winnipeg, Canada. Originally from France, I moved here after spending six years at university. I have a bachelor’s degree in English-to-French translation.

I have been a French instructor for 14 years. I am also a writer and author, photographer, and social media coach / trainer. For a while, I dabbed into journalism, art criticism, and playwriting. I even recorded a spoken word CD.

I have three adorable pets.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved books. When I lived in France, I used to go to old and used book fairs just to touch and smell them. It was quite an experience!

My office is actually full of books. My dream is to have a library like the ones described in classical novels.

I cannot remember when I started writing. It has just always been part of my life.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
One author makes my heart skip a beat every time I read him — Khalil Gibran. All his books have had an impact on my life. “The Prophet” and “Jesus, the Son of Man” are the greatest books I have ever read.

Right now, my favorite genre is historical nonfiction. I love learning new facts.

As to what inspires me in my writing, I would say that it’s pretty much everything. A conversation with a friend, a scene, etc. The world is a great source of inspiration.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Life’s Little Things: The Quotes” is my 10th book. It pays homage to the world around us through photography and inspirational words. Each page is an invitation to reflect on the human condition and our never-ending connection to nature.

Featured Interview With Angie Gallion

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised on the rhythm of night trains rolling through a small farm town in Illinois. My husband and I live south of Atlanta with our daughters. We have two dogs, Ruger, the Great Great Dane, and a Toy Fox Terrier, Bailey. The girls have two Dwarf Lion Head bunnies, Olive and Jo-Jo Fry.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was in the third grade I had a teacher who asked us to turn our spelling words into a narrative. I did and she asked me to read it in front of the class. She was the first person to ever tell me I was a writer and it was maybe the first time I ever stood out for anything, so it made a big impression. I have thought of myself as a writer ever since. Teachers make an eneormous impact on the children they teach.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
It’s a shorter list to tell you what I don’t like to read. I don’t zombies, I don’t like vampires, I don’t like anything that is graphically violent or explicitly sexual. Everything else is fair game, and if it comes from a small press or is indie published it may make an appearance on my review site, Gallion Picks at www.angiegallion.com.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’ve just released the third book, Icara, in the Alison Hayes Journey. I wrote the first book in this series in a college creative writing class and spent the next twenty-five years editing it. It transformed over the years and when I finally decided it was ready I reached out for recommendations for a good editor and negotiated with her to work with me. I chose to self-publish because it gave me so much control, I was in charge of my covers and when I released my books. I also chose to self publish because I didn’t want to wait for a hundred “no”‘s to get to one “yes.” I gave myself a “yes.” The second book was inspired by the responses I was hearing from readers, and I relaized that like them, I wanted to know where Alison went from there. I wrote Purgus in 30 days, and it was an incredible, cathartic experience. I started work on Icara in February and after exceelent work with my editor, it was ready to joins it’s mates in June.

The overriding questions that walk through the series are: Who do you become when everyone around you has made all the wrong decisions? This is the question that Alison Hayes is asking herself through this first book, Intoxic, (released August, 2016). How do you become a person of quality? How do you stop being a have-not and become a have? How do you know what is right? We walk with Alison through her fifteenth year, a year that begins with her mother loosing yet another job, and the eminent loss of yet another live in father figure. The downward spiral escalates from there.

The second novel, Purgus, (released December 2016), steps right on the heels of Intoxic and Alison is released into the world to fend for herself. Her first year as an “adult” is confounded by missteps, by trying to make the right choice, but not fully understanding what that means. By the end of this book she has suffered heartbreak and has made a very mature choice pertaining to an unintended pregnancy. We walk with her through her heartache, through the small triumphs of the year, the beginning of her understanding that choices that will lead to a better life.

The third novel, Icara, (released June 2017), picks up a few days after the end of Purgus, and Alison is set to flee or fly, following a friend to California in hopes of building a better life. She is drawn into the a “big life” of a budding modeling career, and for a time she thinks she can trully escape the taint from her past. Ultimately, Alison’s past catches up to her and the broken shards of her soul spring forth. She finds a safe place to heal and grow and at the end of the novel there is hope, that Alison has finally come to terms with her life, and has matured to the point that she understands she must reckon with her past.

Featured Interview With Rhonda Smiley

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Montreal, Canada but moved to Hollywood, California when I was 12 to live with my dad and two of my three siblings. Now I live in Glendale, California with my boyfriend, James Hereth, who is also my sometimes-writing partner, and our rescue dog, Jojo (who is currently recovering from a torn CCL – the doggie version of our ACL). I make my living writing for TV, and only recently published my first book.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always enjoyed reading, and to this day I still long for a book of fairy tales I had that got lost during one of our moves. It was a huge, hard cover book, with every fairy tale in it (at least that’s how I remember it), and it made me warm and fuzzy inside. But I didn’t actually think about writing professionally until I studied Film Production at Concordia University in Montreal. Everyone wrote the movies they directed, so I started writing. When I graduated, I came back to L.A. and (long story short) started writing for TV. I love it, but after writing assignments for other people, you want to tell your own stories, and that’s why I started writing books. I recently published my first novel, and I’m now in the midst of a creating a graphic novel with my partner, James, while also writing my second book.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My reading list is eclectic. I try to support indie authors as much as I can but I also love John Irving, Nelson DeMille, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler, to name a few. So many writers inspire me. Any time I read a great book, I think, “Wow, I want to do that.” It’s a never-ending pursuit, which is good. Keeps you always striving to get better.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My recently released book, ASPER, is a young adult fantasy about a 16 year old sorceress who loses everything and is on her own for the first time in her life. She was raised by a father who sheltered her from the evils of their world, so she never took her lessons of sorcery seriously. But when he’s killed by the queen’s army, a need for vengeance boils inside her, and she’s determined to hone her skills so she can kill the queen. What happens along the way, however, is that she uncovers a past she never knew, a past that throws everything into question. Now, only she can answer to it.

I love this character because she starts out very innocent, and learns so much about herself, and the difficulties that life can present. She gets beat down, but not for the count. She always gets back up. And that’s inspiring.

I spent years writing it, off and on, between shows I was working on. I didn’t set out to take that long to write a book, but it was more important for me to learn how to do it well than to rush. I’m really pleased with the outcome and I hope people enjoy it.

Featured Interview With Phillip Vega

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Phillip Vega. I’ve always been a storyteller, but never put pen to paper until August 2015. Suddenly, I had a publishing contract, and in the midst of the vortex of marketing, analytics, refining, and continuing to write, I’ve discovered my true calling and passion. I’m now fully and happily immersed in the whirlwind that is the publishing industry, even as I diligently continue my work in software sales.

I’m a former-Long Islander with Hispanic roots, now living Florida, and it is from those memories of summers on Long Island that I crafted my debut novel, Last Exit to Montauk. Now I can’t stop my brain from working through new ideas for future stories, which is why I currently have sixteen other stories in various stages.

My hobbies, aside from enjoying my ongoing work as a published author, include many of the other art forms: singing, performing, and reading. The beach is always home to me. . . and laughter, whether my own or someone else’s, is an unsurpassed joy that I embrace whenever possible.

I live in the Tampa Bay area with my wife, four sons and “two and a half dogs,” which are actually four dogs, but three are Chihuahuas while the fourth is a shepherd, who thinks she’s a Chihuahua, so I call it “two and a half.”

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Growing up, I never really enjoyed reading books. As a teenager though, I started reading comic books, DC mostly. You know, Superman, Batman, Flash, etc. In my late teens through early twenties, I caught the “acting bug”, and began devouring plays. I loved Neil Simon, David Mamet, and other modern authors. I guess this is when I really started enjoying reading and gained a fascination with books.

Writing, on the other hand, just recently started, as a fluke, to be frank, on a rainy Saturday afternoon, in August 2015. My wife and I came home from grocery shopping, and after putting the groceries away, she turned in for a nap with the dogs, leaving me alone to watch TV.

Unfortunately, or fortunately I suppose, nothing caught my attention, so I turned on my iPad, opened Pages and started typing. Before I knew it, I was three chapters into my debut novel, Last Exit to Montauk. It was like a floodgate opened. Images began to play in my mind’s eye, like a video or movie, dialogue and soundtrack included.

Fast forward to the end of October 2015, and I had an 800-page story in my hands, and had no idea what to do with it. Writing a novel, let alone sixteen other ones, was never on my road map. I didn’t know publishers, or editors, and had no idea what to do next.

Over dinner with another couple, I mentioned that I wrote an 800-page story, in between providing an update on the kids and my job. My friend, Carol, brought me back to the story part, and began asking me what my plans were. When I told her I had no plans, she put me in touch with a friend of hers, author, Russ Elliott, who, in turn, put me in contact with my editor and publisher, Janet Fix, thewordverve.

Oddly enough, she wasn’t taking on new clients, but agreed to read my massive piece as a favor to Russ. A few days later, she followed up with me, shared with me the visceral reaction she had to my story, and asked to work with me, even offering to publish Last Exit to Montauk, which is what happened this year, on May 2, 2017.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have a few. I love Jack Reacher novels. I also enjoy Jack Ryan novels as well. Other authors/books I enjoy include, Joseph F. Girzone’s Joshua series, Harry Potter series, Hunger Games, Howard Stern, Stieg Larsson, Lawrence Kelter, Cheryl Bradshaw, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and others.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
It’s called Last Exit to Montauk. According to my readers, Last Exit to Montauk had them laughing and crying in the beat of just a few pages.

It’s a coming-of-age romantic tale of young love, based in the 1980’s and summertime on Long Island. Though the main characters are in their late teens, this is not classified as a new-adult novel, though it certainly could appeal to readers in that category.

Instead, I see it as a love story for any age. And my readership thus far attests to that, talking about memories of first love, or Long Island, or summertime anywhere, or the icons of the 1980’s—or all of the above. It’s also received endorsements from some heavy-hitters in the book industry as well.

Here’s a blurb from the back cover:
When he approaches her at the market, he has no idea the next three weeks of his life would change him forever.

It’s the late 1980’s, summertime, on the North Shore of Long Island. The air stirs with possibilities as it often does during this time of year. And so begins the romance between one Hispanic seventeen-year-old male, on the verge of manhood and ready to conquer the world, and one beautiful and intelligent young woman named B.

It is much more than romance, though. B will forever become a part of this young man’s soul. He will never forget her. This is a coming-of-age story, a love story, replete with milestones, tangled emotions, and adventures that are the embodiments of first love. Not just for the young, but for the young at heart.

The book is available in digital and paperback formats at all online retailers, including:

Featured Interview With Kyle Robertson

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Baton Rouge Louisiana in 1970. When I was 3 years old, my family;y moved to Milwaukee Wisconsin. I am an only child, and I believed no siblings originated my imagination. When you’re lonely, you make up siblings for sanity purposes. I went to the army after graduating from high school. After my stint in Milwaukee, and Germany, I returned to my birthplace. I live in New Roads, close to Baton Rouge. I have a dog. Duke’s a Boston Terrier, and I lose him.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was able to read, my fascination with books began. I remember my Encyclopedia Browns, Judy Blume stories, and those Choose Your Own Adventure books. Books ran my life.
When I began high school, I became addicted to comic books. I could draw, so I wanted to go to Joe Kubert’s Art School to be a comic book artist.
After working for 21 years, I had a chance to become an entrepreneur and published my first book in 2008

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Stephen King, Phillip Kindred Dick, Clive Barker, Anthony Robbins, Zig Zigler, Dean Koontz, Authur Charles Clark, and Michael Crichton. I like all forms of literary information, but my favorites are fiction and self-improvement.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest published work is a science fiction/fantasy tale. It deals with an unsuspecting history teacher from the 24th century having to confront a malevolent immortal with a thousand year grudge. Find out how or if she can beat an immortal.

It’s called The MillenniumMalevolence: The Time Spanning Revenge Endangerment.

Featured Interview With Catalin Marcu

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Romania, in the beautiful region of Moldova. Now I live in Iasi, the biggest city in this region, enjoying a great mixture between a relaxed lifestyle and all the benefits of a big city. From the top floor of the building I live in, I love to breath in the fresh morning air and admire the beautiful view of my city. A second later, I have to stop and go back to playing with my 1 year old son. Yes, I do my writing mostly at night!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always been fascinated with books and not only books, but with anything that let me peer into other worlds or into other people’s lives. Science fiction in particular appealed to me, as it tickled my imagination so much that I’d often stop reading the book and just let my mind create its own stories. I tried writing small things when I was in high-school, but they weren’t worthy of any reader’s eyes, so I figured it’s not my calling.

Through my career as a game designer I often needed to write, be it small excerpts of text to describe gameplay, characters or locations, to more fully fledged stories in the later years. With that practice came a bit of confidence and the desire to write something that stood on its own. Thus, my first book, Companion, became a reality.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre is definitely Science Fiction, but what makes it perfect is if there is also a bit of romance and politics mixed in there. My favorite author is Isaac Asimov, with Arthur C. Clarke close behind.

I don’t have any one inspiration when I write, I tend to draw from the entire myriad of entertainment sources I consume. What I want most is to write things that are very accessible to anyone, but also provoke the reader to come up with questions and answers to things he may never thought of before.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Companion: A Novella is a book about what I think is a very close-by future. It analyzes how the evolution of technology, artificial tissues and artificial intelligence will finally produce the sort of robot that will make us forget it’s not human. And when that happens, how will we react? Will it be fear, superiority, contempt? And, most importantly, how will love fit in this picture? Even if it took me an year to finish, Companion is a short, light reading, but hopefully it leaves you with big questions. Because at the end of the day, that’s what I love most about books, not the stories they tell, but the questions I’m being asked while looking beyond the narrative.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a Scottish guy. I grew up in Dundee, but now live in the suburbs of Paris with my wife and two daughters.
I’ve written one book so far, “The Witch’s List”, and am hard at work on the second one – in what I plan to be a trilogy.
No pets, but there was a huge magpie on my window-sill this morning!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I keep a daily diary, and write travelogues when I go travelling. I suppose I’ve always been writing bits and pieces. My fascination with books is how they can transport you to another place, another time and make you see things from the viewpoint of different people.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Favorite authors include:
– Paul Auster
– Iain Banks
– Tahir Shah
– Eowyn Ivey
– Kazuo Ishiguro
I dabble in a lot of different genres. Especially enjoy travelogues, adventures, culture-clash, mystery, thriller and horror.
Also get inspired by movies from directors like David Lynch, Martin Scorcese, Roland Joffé…

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Sandy Beech doesn’t believe in witches and the supernatural. However, certain strange events occur which put his scepticism to the test: a burning book, a falling crucifix, a mysterious illness, and a fire in a convent which kills all twelve nuns. On her deathbed, Bernadette, the last surviving nun, warns him to control his lusts and avoid African women. Sandy finds this difficult, since he is attracted to exotic, dark-skinned women and after his hedonistic university exchange year in Paris, marries Rocky from the Ivory Coast. Five years later, childless and with the marriage souring, they decide to visit Rocky’s home country. Sandy is drawn into a world of strange beliefs and practices: he finds out about the Witch’s List – a list of people destined to die, and is attacked by various animals starting with a ferocious dog in Abidjan. He delves further and further into the realm of African witchcraft, but the horrific truth remains obscure… The Witch’s List is the first of a trilogy.
It took me about a year to write and is actually based on some of my experiences and stories which I heard on a visit to The Ivory Coast, and also by my experiences of growing up in Scotland and moving to France where I’ve lived/worked most of my adult life.

Featured Interview With Marc McLean

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m Marc McLean, a 35-year-old online personal training and nutrition coach and health and fitness author. I’m a former newspaper editor who switched to the health and fitness industry a few years ago to combine my writing and my long love affair with weight training.

I live in the Loch Lomond area in Scotland (amazing scenery – you gotta visit). I don’t have a partner or pet but my mum has a wee border collie called ‘Summer’ who has got more brains than me.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was not a big book lover during school. In fact, I didn’t properly get into reading books until I was 18 or 19 and then became hooked; reading 1 or 2 per week. These were mainly true crime and history books at first, but then I started reading lots of health and fitness books and titles from the personal development genre.

I basically started writing when I got my first job in the media industry as a junior newspaper reporter in 2000. It was at my local newspaper and didn’t pay very well…but I was just happy to get my byline in the local paper every week and to be able to scrape enough together to get a mortgage for my first flat.

I ended up spending 12 years in the media industry, editing two weekly newspapers, working as a news reporter at a top tabloid in Scotland, and also a spell in PR.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’m really into the personal development/improvement genre, and learning about how the minds of the most accomplished people past and present really worked. How they operate every day, what habits they have, what makes them really tick….I find all of that fascinating. There are countless amazing people out there doing incredible things worth reading about.

I’m talking about people like Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss, Jim Rohn, Gary Vaynerchuk etc. These are the types of people who inspire me to share my own personal experiences and knowledge with the world.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’m author of the Strength Training 101 book series on Amazon, which basically shouts about the many benefits of weight training for men and women.

My latest book ‘Strength Training For Women: Burn Fat Effectively…And Sculpt The Body You’ve Always Dreamed Of’ is the fourth title in the series and is already proving to be popular.

It was inspired by me seeing female friends, relatives, ex-colleagues etc doing standard cardio exercise like jogging and aerobics classes 4,5,6 days per week and getting nowhere. Seeing them being miserable eating boring, bland diets for weeks…seeing no difference…going on a junk food bender in frustration…and then repeating the cycle.

It was also written to encourage many women who have fears/insecurities that hold them back from taking that first important step into the gym. The book underlines that we all have to start somewhere, that other gym-goers are not judging you, and that you are a MUCH stronger person than you actually know.

This is also backed up with real life case studies of women who admit they were clueless about strength training and were worried they would look stupid in the gym. They share how they overcame their fears and have become hooked on lifting weights after experiencing amazing results.

Weight training not only raises your metabolism levels, but it can create an after-burn effect for the next 24 hours. This means that your body is continuing to strip excess bodyfat, while developing toned muscles, even while you sleep. When you train like this consistently you don’t need any fad diet to lose weight and you’ll see clear, physical changes in your body.

I also wrote this book to:
* Clear up lingering myths that weight training makes women ‘bulky’ or ‘too masculine’;
* Educate women on why this form of exercise is ultra effective for burning fat and developing a lean, toned body with curves in all the right places;
* Convince women that they are much stronger than they think;
* Prove that the weights section in the gym is no longer male dominated – and explain why women should be training just like men do;
* Help women build up their confidence in a gym environment and take steps towards becoming stronger inside and out.

The book also features two chapters with women’s strength/wellness coach Marianne Kane, co-founder of Girls Gone Strong and the renowned Get Glutes training program. She shares her expert advice on how women can develop a toned butt and transform their bodies overall.

I really enjoyed writing this book and I’m sure it’ll help a few more people join the ever-growing army of women who are becoming stronger, leaner and healthier every day.

Featured Interview With Laura Heffernan

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in California, but after living in Boston for several years, I fell in love with a Canadian and we wound up in upstate New York. We live in a house ruled by two cats who kindly let us stay with them.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been fascinated with books since I was a little kid. I would insist that people read The Giant Jam Sandwich over and over. When they all got sick of it, I learned to read it myself.

My first short story was written at 5. My writing has improved substantially since then.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I could spend all day listing my favorite authors, but the all time top 3 are probably J.K. Rowling, Tamora Pierce, and Sophie Kinsella. Rom com is my favorite genre, and I could spend all day listing authors in that genre I love to read.

Authors that have inspired me include Sophie Kinsella, Jane Green, Emily Giffin, Jennifer Weiner, Alison Winn Scotch, Leah Marie Brown, and Michele Gorman.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
After Jen loses her job, her boyfriend, and her home, she is cast on a reality show where she hopes to win the cash prize but finds she also wants to win the heart of fellow contestant Justin.

I’ve always been a big fan of reality TV and romantic comedies. After my best friend starred on a show the summer of 2013, I started thinking about what type of show might interest me. About a year later, I started writing. Taking a page from NaNoWriMo, I challenged myself to write 50,000 words in a month. The entire first draft took about 6 weeks. Editing took… a bit longer. 🙂 But I had a great time writing the book, and it’s a fun read.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Raised in Belgrade, Serbia, with a soul of a nomad, visited more than 50 countries, set foot on all the continents, and lived in five (UK, Holland, New Zealand, Serbia) and my home is at the moment in Malta, in the midst of Mediterranean. This magic place at the edge of Europe is full of ancient Temples built 7,000 years ago. and surrounded by the forever expanding Blue. In here there is the most unusual mix of nationalities from all around the world.
We offered our home to a black and white cat called Tobby. She is the queen of our neighborhood and she considers our little family “hers”

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Poetry has always been my way to express different states of mind. Hence my two poetry books (Art of 4 Elements and Tree of Life). Getting lost within a book and writing were my first fascinations. Read at least a 1,000 of books and wrote a 1,000 of pages…

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Both Hesse and Tolstoy were my first Spiritual Gurus. Through their deep insights and soul-full messages I for the first time experienced the world of spiritual growth and meditation. I was 16 when I discovered them and since they followed me through my learnings. Many artists inspire my writings, especially the ones that lived some centuries ago like; Leonardo da Vinci, Lao Tzu, Giordanno Bruno…
I am deeply attracted to the insights a mix of different cultures offer. My kids are from Ethiopia, they speak Serbian (my mother tongue) fluently and consider themselves to be Serbian-Maltese Ethiopians. Ama, the protagonist of my historical fiction novel, comes from Kenia and lives in Macao (China) during the 17th century. Her father is a Portuguese Alchemist, her mum a Kenyan Queen and her friends are from all around the planet, finding themselves in the midst of this complex blend of Chinese, Portuguese and Africans that live together on this little peninsula during the 17th century. Ama as an African Goddess living in China, came to my worlds before I had an idea to adopt children from Addis Abeba.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The one released this year is Conscious Creativity: Mindfulness Meditations (Alchemy of Love Mindfulness Training Book #7). Within the book I explore various creativity tools to better deal with life’s issues, competition oriented culture, stressful work environment and parenting problems. All of the Alchemy of Love Mindfulness Training books are based on the practical, day-to-day spiritual and well-being exercises. The personal and self-development tools within this book include activities that improve creativity, mindfulness, awareness and ultimately, we hope, enhance one’s quality of life.

My fiction book “A-Ma Alchemy of Love” lived with me for about 10 years and non-fiction books were inspired by my endless search and fascination with meditation, prayer, music, dance, singing, within questions: Where do we come from? What is our purpose on Earth? What is consciousness? How to live our highest potential? How to stay healthy and happy? All the non-fiction books: Mindful Eating, Mindful Being and Conscious Parenting were born during this search. Alchemy, Love and Mindfulness found their merge within this mission: Alchemy of Love Mindfulness Training.

Since March 2014, Artof4Elements developed and with 7 Authors published the Alchemy of Love Mindfulness Training Series of 9 fiction and non-fiction books focusing on spiritual growth, creativity and mindfulness.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always loved reading which was a nighttime activity when I was a child and then reading to my children. I often thought about writing a book long before I actually did, which was only this year

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I am a reader of natural health, live experience mainly in my adult life.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Inspired by my research into my own health, tiredness, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, increase in weight, aches, nausea. To me all unexplained as I have an active, eat well (so I thought) it just made no sense to be feeling so weak all the time. I cam across many articles on parasites, now we all know we need to worm ourselves but I was astounded to find that these creatures cause many of the simplest ailments, that the whole cycle of killing and re-infection is part of the problem. What I did not know is how easily we are infected, in fact we have created the perfect breeding ground for these monsters to grow and be spread. I also found that I spent hours upon hours searching for information (there is so much out there but not consolidate and really most people just don’t have the time or the inclination plus it is also a subject many do not talk about, and therefore do not realise how rampant a problem it is, and so here is my book for those who do not know how to protect themselves, why they need and how it is really simple to do so…. they could start feeling better.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Although I have moved quite a bit during my life we seemed to gravitate toward small towns in Kansas and Colorado. So I don’t really have a “home town” so to say but I feel comfortable in the Midwest. Right now my family and I live in Kansas where the weather is less than desirable but the people are friendly and caring.
You asked if I have pets, well yes you could say that. Right now we share our home with two dogs, Mama a shepherd mix that lived as a stray on a property we moved to years ago. After we moved she came with us because she is family. And our newest furry family member is a 60+ pound six month old Great Pyrenees puppy named Woofy. We also have five cats, Dolly, Spike, Goblin, Tommy, and Ghost. I have always had a soft spot for animals. Truthfully I can’t imagine not having pets in the house, it would seem so empty. My kids have inherited my love for animals and my daughter has told me we need a bigger house so we can get more cats.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved books and writing. I have piles and piles of partial books and poems all over the house. And to be truthful I always have. But only recently did I decided to publish my books and make a career out of something I love to do. For almost fifteen years before this I worked in an asphalt laboratory. It paid the bills but it was not what I was meant to do with my life. I always knew that but in life sometimes you just get to a place that you think is just temporary. You think you will just stay there for a little while until you get to where you are really suppose to be. But then you blink and you realize you’ve been in the same spot for years. So I guess that’s what happened to me. So I finally ‘woke up’ I guess you could say, and published my first novel this year and started to be true to who I really am.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have several favorite authors. I’m a sucker for Edgar Allan Poe. I love the dreamy dark quality he has. I also love Mary Stuart, she is so descriptive with her works that you can actually feel what the characters feel. There are some indie’s out there right now (two in particular that haven’t actually published their works yet.) I was lucky enough to read a little of what they are working on and WOW! Absolutely amazing! I am so excited for them to publish so I can read more. (I’m talking to you Basil and Savvy!) 😉
I also am fascinated by real people so I read a lot of biographies and I also read true crime sometimes. (Anne Rule is a great writer.) The list of who inspired me could go on and on. I have unpublished copies of memoirs family members of mine wrote before they passed which inspired me to actually publish my work.
It’s unbelievable how many great writers are out there. It’s also a little sad too because many of them wont follow through with their writing dreams and not only will they lose but we will too if they for whatever reason decided not to follow their dreams. Imagine if Shakespeare had decided to pursue another career.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Fall of the House of Queens is a historical fiction that takes place during the Tudor period in the court of Henry VIII. Originally I planned on writing through the eyes of Bessie Blount but when I put pen to paper it was Henry’s fool William Somers that showed up. So I just went with it. I didn’t have an outline or a plan I just sat and wrote whatever came out. I remember when one of my characters, Luke, showed up. He wasn’t planned but all of a sudden there he was on the page and he just permeated the story. Now I can’t imagine the story without him.
It wasn’t easy to write Fall of the House of Queens because I was working full time and my kids were really little so for a couple of years I would wake up and try to write a little before it was time to get them up and off to daycare then get myself to work so that often meant waking at four in the morning to try to get a little writing in. Or I would try to sneak in writing like when they were taking a bath I would take my notebook in while I kept an eye on them and try to write a few lines. I couldn’t write every day so sometimes I would go weeks or months without writing but eventually persistence paid off and I had it all down in my yellow notebook. THEN I had to get that all copied onto the computer.

Featured Interview With Fiona Rintoul

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a Scottish writer based in Glasgow and on the Isle of Harris. I flit between these two very different places with my husband and our two Labradors. I grew up in East Kilbride, a new town on the outskirts of Glasgow, and spent many years living and working abroad and in London, before returning – gratefully – to Scotland in 2005.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was a voracious reader as a child and have always loved writing. The first time I remember being really excited by creative writing was aged about 12 during a school test, when I felt I’d nailed a description of some trees. However, I love all kinds of writing – not just fiction writing. Anything to do with words interests me. That’s probably why I ended up working as journalist for years. I wrote about investment, which as lot of people think is a dry topic, but I enjoyed the challenge of writing about it in an interesting way. I also love translating. I studied French and German at university, and in 2014 I published my first full-length literary translation, Outside Verdun by Arnold Zweig. The book is a German classic of the first world war, overlooked in the west because Zweig was a communist. It was incredibly complex to translate, with a lot of military vocabulary and dialect, but I enjoyed every minute of it. The thrill of finding just the right translation was the same as the one I got when I nailed the trees.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
When I was young I loved ‘the Margarets’: Margaret Atwood and Margaret Drabble. They portrayed women who were feisty and fit for the fight, and they wrote, I felt, with great humor. Then I got into ‘the Ians’: Ian McEwan and the Scottish writer Ian Banks. They too both wrote with humor, and there was often a mystery at the center of their books. I love books that unveil a secret or some terrible event from the past. One book in that vein that I love is Out Stealing Horses by the Norwegian writer Per Petterson. Another is In Times of Fading Light by the East German writer Eugen Ruge, which keeps circling back to one event on 1 October 1989 shortly before the Berlin Wall fell. I also love books that somehow make the world sparkle in new ways, even if sparkles rather darkly. The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami does this, as does Jenny Erpenbeck, another East German writer.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
In The Leipzig Affair, which is my first novel, I tried to create the kind of world I like to read about. The book is set in the former East Germany and has at its heart a series of secrets and betrayals, which are slowly unveiled. I lived in East Germany as student and I wanted to show what it was like to live in a fairly grim dictatorship, where betrayal was common currency. However, I also wanted to show the country’s romantic side – because it certainly had one. There was always something a little bit glamorous about the border crossings, the guards, the dusty, car-less streets. And it was fascinating to live in a country where money wasn’t that important. People had big, book-lined flats in tumbledown, turn-of-the-century apartment buildings. They went on holiday to Bulgaria. And there was a thriving arts scene that was all the more exciting because it was underground.

The glamorous side of East Germany is embodied in the central character of Magda. She’s a strong-minded, independent young woman who can be quite ruthless. But, of course, she also has feelings and vulnerabilities, and her trust in one particular friend is in the end her undoing.

The book took me a long time to write: over a decade from conception to publication, though I wasn’t working on it consistently all that time. It took me so long because there was a doubt at the back of my mind about whether I was ‘qualified’ to write it, as I’m not East German. A trip back to Germany quashed my doubts. I realized there was still so much suspicion between east and west that an outsider was probably the best person to write the story.

When the book was published, my favorite response was from an elderly woman in Dresden, who wrote to thank me for writing it because she said it perfectly captured her memories of what it was like to live in East Germany both before and after reunification. She said she appreciated that I was neither an ‘Ossi’ nor a ‘Wessi’. That was a lesson. You can write anyone, because the character you are creating is unique.

The Leipzig Affair is in two parts. The first part takes place in the 1980s during the communist dictatorship, and the second after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the second part, Magda begins to uncover some of the secrets that so affected her life during communism. The second part also tells the story of German reunification, which was much more complex, particularly in the eastern part of the country, than the dominant narrative allows. This is topical again today because of political developments in the European Union. It is poignant that Helmut Kohl, the architect of German reunification and of the single European currency, died just as talks on the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union began.

We’re entering a new period of history in Europe and a time of great uncertainty. I hope The Leipzig Affair helps a little to illuminate what went before.

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a full time author living in Auckland, New Zealand. Apart from a year working and living in London, I’ve always lived in Auckland. I do travel extensively. You have to living at the bottom of the world!
We’ve just adopted a crazy tortie cat from the SPCA, to replace our beloved stray who lived with us for eighteen years and died just before Christmas.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved reading. And my room at home was packed full of first editions of The Famous Five, and every other Enid Blyton book under the sun. I only wish I’d been more careful with them!
I was a customs officer for fourteen years, which I adored, but my father died suddenly, so my brother and I took over the running of the family antique business. It was working at Antique Alley that I started writing, basing my work around the objects that came into the shop. And some of the more eclectic customers! Imagining their stories and the stories behind how the objects came to be in the shop.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favourite authors are, Enid Blyton of course. I will love her for ever. J.K. Rowling – because anyone who can inspire such love for reading in such a diverse planet deserves our adoration. Edward Rutherfurd for his epic tomes. He ability to weave stories though multi generations is inspiring. G.R.R. Martin for his descriptions. You don’t need to watch the Game of Thrones series – you can see the characters and their outfits and their worlds on the pages of his books. And Deborah Harkness, a historian turned storyteller. Her books really inspired me to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
After writing two time slip books, I’ve tipped one bloody toe into the realm of horror. My first horror novel, PAINTED, will be published on the 30th June 2017. PAINTED is centred around an art appraiser sent to catalogue a collection of portraits. PAINTED touches on all things antique. The genesis for the book was the upstairs art room at Antique Alley, our antique shop. It’s the sort of room you don’t want to be in with the lights off… One reviewer called it ‘Caravaggio meets Poltergeist’, and I couldn’t ask for a better review than that!

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Born and raised in Texas, I married my high school sweetheart and we set out to see the world courtesy of the air force. We moved from Texas to England, then to Florida and many states in between, and finally landed in California where we’ve lived for twenty years. We have a married daughter who’s given us a granddaughter to spoil, and also a married son. We’re moving into our motorhome we’ve named Flight Risk to explore the backroads and national parks, small towns, and other interesting gems at a slower pace.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My first book was about a line that wanted to join a parade. My mom quickly noticed my talent and stapled the pages together, so I became a published author by the age of 6.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’ll read in just about any genre, but nonfiction books about expats, travelers, and enjoyers of nature are my current favorite for fun reads. I’ve just finished a long list of true-life spy stories for my latest book, and I’ll continue reading spy novels now that I have time.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Misdirect, a Novel of Spies, the Sahara, and Searching for God” is the book that I told my family and friends was kicking my keyboard to the curb because of the details, research, and complicated plot. I wanted to not only write about the world of espionage, but also include the reader in what it must be like to live essentially telling lies, or misdirecting as they call it, in order to get the job done. Because of the details and plot I had to weave together without giving away the ending, I had to re-do and re-write this story many times.

To add credibility, I researched the world of espionage and had the opportunity to interview two intelligence experts. I can’t reveal their names, but trust me, these are fascinating people!

I believe I accomplished my goal because the first reviewers made comments like, “a climactic, incredible ending,” and “the author seems to have more than a passing knowledge of how the CIA would carry out a field operation of the kind described. It is well researched — either that or Nault has a gifted imagination.”

Featured Interview With Katerina Baker

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a mother to two witty girls, a project manager at a large corporation in New York City, and a writer at night, the only time of the day when I can be sane while plunging my characters into insane situations.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I wrote my first book in middle school, although I doubt you’d be interested in reading it. Since then, I can’t remember the time I wasn’t writing.

I think most authors have these “voices” in their head that keep changing the outcomes of reality. For example, I am crossing a street and a huge ass SUV pulls up with tinted windows. I can hear arguments inside it and some female voice. I begin to imagine that the guy is an undercover cop who is pretending to be a driver of a mafia leader and the girl is the bad guy’s daughter who never stops bickering with her “driver”. A story forms in my head and then windows roll down and I hear baby’s cries. Turns out the woman is upset her husband woke up their son. Reality is sometimes mundane, but writers grasp onto some tiny inspirations thrown at them all around and create fiction that’s entertaining to read.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’ve recently read and highly recommend Camilla Monk’s Spotless series. I love Camilla’s dark humor and voice, and this series will make up stay up reading and laughing. What can be more fun than a serial killer with an OCD paired with a nerdy IT programmer who loves romance novels?

Tell us a little about your latest book?
The Corner Office is a story of a thirty-something year old female executive and her journey to “achieve it all”: in career and personal life. It’s about the mistakes that she makes along the way, including her affair with her subordinate that almost destroys everything she worked for. He is very different from other men she is around: a tattooed biker who is intense and domineering in bed, he is set on pursuing her, and she is initially drawn to him.
But the novel is not just about work. The Corner Office is a fun, fast-paced story that centers around two characters who spent years hating each other and fighting. They are competitors in the office, but their feelings lie deeper than hate, and each of their interactions are explosive.
I wanted to layer in fun scenes and situations to offset topics that would be dry on their own. I threw Tara into awkward situations. For example, the guy she ends up having an affair with meets her on a bike, and she refuses to get on at first. She is wearing her work clothes: pencil skirt, tight shirt, high heels. There is a masturbation scene; here is a short excerpt:
A woman had other ways to satisfy her sexual cravings. Mine came in trendy silver, with an electronically operated, “modest-sized” device designed specifically for ”her” pleasure. It was there for me when I needed it, it didn’t require any work on my part to get it ready, and it didn’t ask to rank our latest adventure when we were done. “Tara, sweetie, how was it? I feel like this one was at least a solid eight.” My Adam & Eve had a bit more common sense than that.

Featured Interview With Aislinn Kearns

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hi! My name is Aislinn Kearns and I write romantic suspense with ex-military heroes and heroines. In the Soldiering On series, a group of friends that were injured in the line of duty band together to open a security company to show the world they still have what it takes, and fall in love along the way.

I was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia, and have recently come back from a two-year stint working in Qatar. It was a fascinating experience.

It’s no secret that I adore dogs and would probably own 20 if my tiny apartment would hold them. Alas, I have to wait until I move to somewhere with a yard before I can fulfill that dream.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Oh, I’ve always written stories, ever since I first knew how to write. I used to write little stories when I was young – in between my voracious reading, of course! I think I read every book in my school library when I was a kid. But I first started writing books seriously when I was doing the final semester of my Masters degree. I wanted something to take my mind off my studies, so I wrote a historical romance novel! That one won’t be published any time soon, though. 😉

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’ll read any subgenre of romance – as long as it has a happy ending, I’m there. This includes historical, suspense, steampunk, contemporary, sci-fi, and many more. (Occasionally I dip into crime, particularly on audiobooks, but I’m very selective.) I love beta heroes (or at least not alphaholes!) and all kinds of tropes, such as snowed in together, fake dating, and survival in the snow or jungle.

Some of my favourite authors include Suzanne Brockmann (who is a huge influence on my writing), Jayne Ann Krentz, and Lisa Marie Rice.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is book #4 in the Soldiering On series, called Hotel Hideaway. Out June 30th! It features a female bodyguard protecting a CEO with assassins on his tail – but both have secrets they’re unwilling to share.

When Sam foils an assassination attempt against a handsome stranger, she’s given a dangerous opportunity. A few months prior, her friends were caught up in a deadly hostage situation, and now she has one chance to go undercover with the people her boss thinks are responsible. Only Sam isn’t good at lying, particularly not to the sexy CEO whose life she saved. But was he the one that ordered the terrorist plot that nearly killed her friends?

Cameron Lawrence has his own reasons for working at Beaton Security—reasons he can’t share with Sam. No matter how intriguing he finds his new bodyguard—or how beautiful—he knows she’s hiding something, and he needs to find out what before it puts them both in danger. When a second assassin strikes, they have no choice but to work together. But can they also learn to trust each other, before it’s too late?
