Featured Interview With Devon Ellington
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a full-time writer, publishing under multiple names in multiple genres. I spent the bulk of my life and work in New York City, working backstage on Broadway and in film and television production. I used to live a block away from Times Square — you could see the ball on New Year’s Eve from my window. I now live on Cape Cod. I am owned by cats, although once I buy a house, I will add dogs back into the mix. I’m interested in almost everything, which means I write about almost everything. I’m also an internationally-produced playwright and radio writer. I’m passionate about radio.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading before I was three. I started writing when I was six. My first published work was in school literary magazines, and I started writing plays in middle school. I wrote for the local paper during high school. In college, writing took a backseat as I worked in production for theatre and film. I lived in San Francisco and Seattle for awhile, working my way up in theatre, and then back to NYC, where I worked my way up to Broadway. I started writing again while off-Broadway, Actresses were frustrated by the lack of good monologues; I started writing for them, and they landed jobs. That expanded into plays, and then I went back to writing short stories and novels, all while working full-time in theatre.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I read just about anything and everything, as long as it’s not written in the present tense. I can’t stand novels in the present tense. I read mostly historical fiction, mystery, thriller, suspense, fantasy, science fiction, literary, and paranormal. I read a lot of non-fiction, too, and I have an extensive collection of published women’s journals throughout history.
Shakespeare continues to be a favorite. He’s still relevant.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The book that released in October 2017 is PLAYING THE ANGLES, the first Coventina Circle novel, which is paranormal romantic suspense.
Witchcraft, politics, and theatre collide as Morag D’Anneville and Secret Service agent Simon Keane fight to protect the Vice President of the United States — or is it Morag who needs Simon’s protection more than the VP?
Witch and theatre professional Morag D’Anneville is annoyed when she’s assigned to dress the conservative Vice President as he makes a surprise appearance in his favorite Broadway show. Even more irritating, she has to teach Agent Simon Keane, part of the security detail, the backstage ropes in preparation. A strong attraction flares between them which they both recognize is doomed, and Simon must also fight his superior’s prejudice that Morag’s beliefs make her a threat to the Vice President. When Morag is attacked, Simon’s loyalties are torn between protecting the man he’s sworn to protect, and protecting the woman he loves.
