Featured Interview With Susanna Rogers
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
As a child, I could never get my hands on enough books. It took me a while to discover the library where I found Donna Parker and Nancy Drew. At high school they didn’t have Nancy Drew but they did have Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange. My world changed.
I am now the author of kick butt books for young adults. I also write romance and at one point moved to a life of crime – you might be seeing more of that. I love writing young adult, partly because I’m an overgrown teenager and partly because I can write the kick butt heroines I adore.
Years ago, a fixation with Buffy inspired me to take up kickboxing and I now have a second-degree black belt. I teach as well as train. I have a dream too – of empowering girls and guys around the globe to believe in themselves, to take care and follow their dreams.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved books and reading and can’t imagine life without those things. That’s probably one of the things that led me to become a librarian. I love organising, so that also helped. I have an honours degree in philosophy (don’t ask me why!) and the title of my honours thesis is quite telling – How can we be moved by that fate of Anna Karenina? Looking back, it’s obvious I yearned to be a writer but somehow it took me a while to realise this. And since I started writing, there has been no looking back.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have too many favourite authors and I enjoy reading all sorts of books. I particularly love reading young adult fiction because it’s so much fun and we’re never too old to have fun! I am continually inspired by every good book that I read and by the people and events around me but if I had to pick one inspirational author, it would probably be Harper Lee. Because To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most beautiful books ever written.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Infiltration is the story of an elite teen soldier who is sent back in time to complete an important mission but when she gets there, she finds the world is not at all what she was expecting despite all the training she has had. She’s the kid who doesn’t fit in and who slowly discovers that the adults in her life have been lying to her and then has to make her own way in life.
