Featured Interview With Susan Rose
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Susan Rose and I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where I was born and raised. My town is situated between the mountains and the beach, so an adventure is always just a short drive away.
I have two cats and a dog, Pugsley. Pugsley, a blue heeler with one blue eye and one brown eye, was the inspiration for some of the legends in my new book, “Shattered Crust.” A friend once told me that Native American’s believe multi-colored eyes like his were used to view the world around them with the brown eye and the spirit world with the blue eye. I knew I could use this as inspiration for my story where Native American legends sure to life from beneath the crust at Yellowstone National Park.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was only nine when I first realized that I wanted to become an author. I remember typing up a two page story to give to my grandparents for Christmas. At the bottom of the story I signed it, “Susan Ellsworth, Author.”
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Stephanie Meyers. I think she did a fantastic job with the “Twilight” series and I’m so happy that I picked up that first book before it had been hyped-up by the media. It was exciting to me because I had no idea what was going to happen as I read it. That made it a very enjoyable story for me.
I think fantasy is becoming my favorite genre, but I love everything from non-fiction, to young adult, to fiction/fantasy and everything else in between.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Shattered Crust: Yellowstone Bites Back,” begins with Molly and her mother, Dana travelling to Yellowstone for a vacation. While there, Molly meets and falls in love with a park-ranger, Bryce.
Bryce and Molly learn about some of the Native American legends that surround Yellowstone. The legends start to come to life and it isn’t until Molly stumbles upon a cavern with Native American paintings, that she realizes she holds the key to discovering how to save civilization from the scary legends that are surging to life from beneath the earth’s crust.
It took me six years to complete this story and I’m very happy with the outcome! I have personally read it more than 100 times as I edited and tweaked it, and I’m still not tired of the story!
