Featured Interview With Susan Appleyard
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in England but now live in Canada 6 months of the year and Mexico for the other 6 months. I have 3 children and, unbelievably, 6 grandchildren who are the delight of my life.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I think I started writing when I learned how to write. Or perhaps even before then. As a child, I always had dolls in bed with me, and I would invent and act out little plays with them when I was supposed to be sleeping. So I suppose it was inevitable that I would become either a writer or actress. I wrote my first book when I was 17. I need hardly add that it was awful. It wasn’t until I wrote my first historical novel several years later that I knew I’d found my niche.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Sharon Kay Penman, Morgan Llywelyn and Hilary Mantel. I have learned from all of these and they inspire me to write better.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is a departure for me because it is a novella. It covers the last few months of the life of Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, and how his government conspired against him to bring about his deposition. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Bavaria during the course of my writing and visited many of the places associated with him – particularly the fabulous castles he built.
