Featured Interview With Shaheen Darr
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Kenya but in the 1980s I left my home country to live my married life in Britain. I am a mother of three grown daughters who have brought a special meaning to my life. They are independent spirits with generous natures who enrich my every living moment. I am proud I have brought up women who can think for themselves and can fight for their rights should the need arise.
I have been writing for an online writing site on various subjects including business and finance but it is fiction and poetry that interests me the most. I have two projects in the pipeline, a book of short stories and a novel that reflects many of my own experiences as an Asian woman living in Britain.
I question life a lot and from the random pages of my diary the why’s and what if’s were finally self published in two books. “Soul Searching” and “The Spectrum of Life”. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
We had a family bookshop so I grew up around books, there was no avoiding them! I started writing about 6 years ago, at first it was mostly articles on finance and small businesses and then I started to delve into poetry and fiction.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Apart from the classic writers like Jane Austen, William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens some of the modern writers whose books I have enjoyed reading include Anudhati Roy, Monica Ali, Katerina Kenison, Khaled Hosseini, Dan Brown and Chinua Achebe. The list is too long so for the moment these will have to suffice. I enjoy reading fictional novels, poetry and autobiographies. Some of my favourite autobiographies are The Story of My Experiments with Life by Mahatma Gaddhi and The Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I have self published two poetry books on Amazon called Soul Searching and The Spectrum of Life. I question life a lot and these books contain diary entries from my life and what I see around me. I am currently writing a novel and another half finished project is a book of short stories
