Featured Interview With Roger B. Burt

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
For some time now I’ve been sitting here trying to figure out how to answer these questions. Naturally I was born in one place but after that my life became a series of awakenings and developments. I’ve lived in New York (as a child transiting between yuppies and great working class buddies), college was in Michigan (a major component of the sixties revolution was born on our Ann Arbor campus), graduate school at Duke in North Carolina (as the civil rights struggle exploded) then on to Maryland where I worked in inner city Baltimore poverty while living in a spirit lively glorious rural valley. Forays into Europe from an early age opened the world to me and a fifteen year adventure in the Caribbean confirmed my world citizenship. Now I live peacefully on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
While there have been marked demarkations in my life I do not define most of my life in terms of specific events. Books are part of opening the world and breathing diversity into our existence. I’ve written off and on throughout my life and the writing covered fiction and nonfiction. The books can be seen on my author page at Amazon. The Caribbean adventure is spelled out on my Word Press blog, caribbeandreamblog.com. Presently I address the world through my blog cuspofreality.com

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I don’t have favorite authors. I forage in the world of books. In fiction I lean toward fantasy and anything which is imaginative and intriguing. In nonfiction I cover the waterfront including such things as the real lives of ancient Amazon warrior women in East Asia or the possible future of our economy in postcapitalism. Presently I’m taken by our national crisis and the import of a world which is hanging on the edge of another catastrophic era. These latter real world issues are feeding my present writing.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Throughout my entire career as a psychologist I’ve been fascinated by mythology. In the turmoil of the 1960s I became an enthusiastic supporter of the beginning of the modern day movement to empower women. Recently these two things came together in my mind and weaving them in a work of fiction was irresistible.

More recently the work to end the subjugation of women has become insistent. What fascinates me is that at once we saw significant benefits for families, communities and countries. It is just possible that we may be seeing something which will be crucial as we enter a period of marked social and environmental crisis. And so I wrote of the Tethyan people composed of women living in the sea, on land in families devoted to stewardship and justice and warrior women called the Andromeda.

Our opening lead character is a young woman devoted to providing micro loans for third world women. She thought herself to be alone without a family. And then she learned she was from a Tethyan family. The shock from the import was more than significant. And from there we view the details of the people and their struggle. I thought it a trilogy. The first book Gaia’s Majesty-Mission Called:Women in Power has been published. The second book is advanced and there is a draft of a third. And now it seem a fourth book is becoming insistent.
