Featured Interview With Poppy Reid
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Scotland, and grew up all over the north of England. When I was eighteen I moved to York to study at university and at nineteen I studied in Tokyo, Japan. I now live in Nagano, Japan as an English teacher. I don’t have any pets yet, but I’d really like to get a puppy one day.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always liked reading ever since I was a little kid. I remember my aunt buying me a massive Jacqueline Wilson collection and reading the lot in just a few days. I’ve been writing for almost as long – I remember hoping for rainy days at school so I could work on my alien story – I vaguely remember a kid’s little sister being abducted whilst buying ice cream and the characters building a spaceship to get her back.
I used to sit in my room for hours typing away and working on my fire princess books. We lost most of them last time we moved, though. At the time I thought they were great, but I’d probably cringe if I saw them now.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I like a lot of genres. My guilty pleasure is drama and romance – the old style ones where a woman is swept off her feet by a strong man and he does anything to make her his. Fantasy is great, too – one of my favourite series of all time is a paranormal horror called the Darren Shan saga. I like all kinds of genres – if the book has a good story it can grab my attention.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Blood of the Fallen was picked up by Quest Publications earlier this year. It’s a high fantasy with a touch of romance about an outcast soldier framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and an Elf survivor of genocide, who must put aside their hatred and rely on each other to survive amidst war and chaos. I started writing it when I was seventeen and finally finished it last year. I enjoyed writing it a lot, and I’m working on the sequel, Blood of the Innocent, right now.
