Featured Interview With Perry Williams
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in a small town near San Diego called National City. After high school I felt I had no place to go so I joined the U.S. Navy where I was promptly sent to Vietnam where I learned the true value of human life. After the service I used the GI bill to attend San Diego State University. There is where I got started in writing and acting. I now live in Hayden, Idaho on 12 acres and almost all the wildlife you could think of. People travel thousands of miles to see a bald eagle – I got one in my front yard living in a huge nest on a very large tree. I also have two rabbits living near my front lawn and somehow, they are fast enough to survive everything that wants to eat them. It’s very quiet here compared to where I last lived and that would be Venice Beach in Los Angeles. I don’t miss the helicopters flying overhead for hours and of course the numerous police cars with all the noise they make. But I do miss the many fine restaurants. Everything is quiet where I live and I like it.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started writing while attending San Diego State University. I have a degree in drama and a minor in music. Very quickly I became quite popular and almost everything I wrote was performed in some way or another by actors and I loved it. After graduation I moved to L.A. where I got a job at Paramount studios where I acted in such shows as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and
Bosom Buddies and many more. This is where I got my first professional writing job. I actually wrote an episode of Laverne & Shirley. I still get residuals for it though not very much. I prefer writing screenplays but lately, I switched to novels because you are not restricted by needing to keep it to two hours or less. With a novel, you can write all you want. When I convert Saving Christ: Starway Seven to a screenplay it’s going to be very difficult cutting a 114,000-word novel to a 120-page screenplay, but I will do it.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite writer is Ernest Hemingway but I now enjoy writers such as Stephen King and Michael Crichton mainly because everything they wrote got made into a movie which is precisely what I want for Saving Christ: Starway Seven. This movie would be something totally new but very, very familiar. I like to write with big meanings. My other book, Pollen and the Ring of Harmony is about an alien with amazing powers sent to earth to protect mother nature from us humans. And of course, there is nothing bigger than Jesus, still to this day the most known person on earth.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Saving Christ: Starway Seven is first of all a new and fresh telling of the greatest story ever told. Its basic premise is that it is a love story between Jesus and a modern-day woman sent back in time to be with Jesus for his last seven days. It has action, adventure, romance, time travel all in one. When I say romance, I mean pure and clean romance with no passion. Nothing is inappropriate in the book and everything in it happens according to the bible. There is also tension as one of the time travelers sent back in time has instructions to kill Jesus before he gets on the cross thus changing religion forever. Jennifer, my main character must save Jesus only to know he is going to die on the cross a day later. A true tragic love story. I wanted to show the human side of Jesus as if he was your friend and of course, you get to meet all the various characters from the bible but from a different viewpoint, that is from a modern-day woman who will not tell Jesus or anyone she is from the future. Jennifer even at the end tries to save Jesus with a machine gun no less but God won’t let her. The greatest love she has ever known will soon die on the cross but she ends up with a great gift, that being faith.
