Featured Interview With Noel Wellington
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Born in the Soviet Union, during the Cold War, and now living in Canada, I have been producing volumes of high-quality technical documentation throughout my 25-year long software developer career. Writing technical stuff seemed mighty boring, and I started writing fiction on the side. Now, I have completely switched over to fiction. For the past four years, I have been working on the trilogy below, as well as on a number of short stories based on it, and a related novella.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading very early. When I went to school at the age of 7, I already knew how to read. Since then I spent all my spare time reading.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I grew up reading mostly works of Russian writers. Later I read Ray Bradbury, Stephen King, JRR Tolkien.
My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy.
My writing is mostly inspired by my family and the events in the world around us.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The God’s Bracelet is a trilogy, consisting of the books “Finding Ishtar”, “Double Hazard”, and “The Mute Eye”. It had started off as “The God’s Bracelet” per se, but it quickly outgrew a reasonable limit for a single book. Their genre is a blend of science fiction and fantasy. My goal in writing them was to be original. I had avid fantasy lovers proof-read them, with a single goal: to find any similarities to existing lore. They could not! Essentially, I have written these books for myself. They are my refuge from the grim reality of our world. Writing them, I laughed, cried, and froze in frightened anticipation of the culmination. My goal is fulfilled, even if none of them will ever be published, though they should be.
The main protagonist, Gerald Burns, is an officer, assigned to a space exploration mission. He touches an alien artifact, and all hell breaks lose. His life turns upside down, and mysterious events start happening all across our universe and far beyond. As the story unravels, the protagonist begins to change. The more he changes, the more he comes across strange creatures, and the more they keep changing him. Only one thing cannot change: his kindness. This is what this trilogy is about, and the actual sci-fi stuff is secondary to the trials and challenges that destiny subjects Gerald to. The trigger event plunges the protagonist into ages of loneliness, and he seeks love and friendship, which he eventually finds after many trials. He could rest on his laurels, but now that he has a soulmate, they together keep chasing dreams, discovering more mysteries, and putting their feelings to the test.
The first book, “Finding Ishtar”, is ready for print. The second book, “Double Hazard”, is nearing completion. The third book, “The Mute Eye”, is well underway. I have teamed up with an artist, who has done a piece of concept art and several cover pages and is working on chapter illustrations.
