Featured Interview With Morgan St. James
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I lived in Chicago until I was thirteen and my parent moved to L.A. Remembering those chilly winds off the lake is why I don’t “do cold” today. After living in L.A. most of my life and traveling extensively, I settled in Las Vegas full time in 2012. Most people think of Las Vegas as “the Strip” but I live in a lovely residential community and believe it or not, it is quiet–very conducive to writing. My rescue dog Dylan always stakes out his spot under my desk.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
As far as fascination, I’ve been an avid reader from the time I was a kid. Most writers should be readers. Then in the 70s I wrote and illustrated my first and only children’s book, LaRue the Llama Helps His Mama, which was just released as a Kindle after about 36 years. LOL In the late 70s I wrote my first magazine article and went on to write many more. In the mid 90s my sister, Phyllice Bradner, and I teamed up to create the Silver Sisters Mysteries. The first one was originally published in 2006 and re-released in 2014. Since that first book, I’ve written 11 more and over 600 articles about the business and craft of writing. I co-host the Writers Tricks of the Trade show on Blog Talk Radio the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 6:00 pm PST/9:00 EST. All of the shows are archived for future listening.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading mysteries and thrillers with a touch of humor. Early on I was inspired by Mary Daheim. I also read The Cat Who books for awhile, but feared they were running out of corpses in that little town 40 miles north of nowhere. I love the sarcastic humor of Robert Crais’s Elvis Cole, and books by Michael Connelly, Vince DeMille and more. I guess you could say my tastes are eclectic in the choice of authors, because I like funny mysteries and also high-powered thrillers.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Rampaging Russians, Deadly Teapots, Twin Sleuths, Old Magicians and MURDER!
Twin sleuths Goldie and Godiva, the Silver Sisters, are at it again. This is the second book in the series, and this time they’re-tracking seven stolen teapots from Alaska to LA. To add to the fun, the twins’ eighty-one-year-old mother and uncle, Flossie and Sterling Silver who are former vaudeville magicians, get into the act! The Russian samovar teapots sell quickly, but people begin to die. We know (or think we know) the bumbling Dumkovsky brothers are at the bottom of the murders, but the question is “whydunit?” What makes those teapots worth killing for?
