Featured Interview With Melanie Rodriguez
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a fantasy author living life’s adventures with my Shepsky dog, Shadow, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am also a gamer and a cosplay enthusiast! I was raised in New York, both in Queens and the Bronx; I also spent a great deal of time in Hoboken, New Jersey. I moved around a lot, but I feel that I can leave some roots here in the Southwest.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
For as long as I could remember, I had a book in my hands. Also a pen and a notebook. I first started to write when I was 11; once I found out I was moving to another state, I wrote a story about how my life could go. I was pretty afraid at the time and thought it would make me feel better. After that, I had a dream about a character and finally put that dream down on paper at age 13. The series I’m currently working on features the said dream and the storyline.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have a ton of authors I love and idolize, like Sara Douglass, Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, and so on. I mainly read fantasy and mysteries, with the occasional historical fiction.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
MISTRESS OF BLACKWEN is my most recent novel. It is the second of the Artemis Ravenwing novels, a YA coming of age fantasy tale. It follows the adventures of the main protagonist, Artemis, who discovers the truth about her dark bloodline. The supporting cast includes an elf soldier, a witch, an elf mage, another dhampir (half-human and half-vampire), and much more. In the first novel, the readers are introduced to Artemis’ struggles with prejudice. In this novel, you cheer on Artemis through the journey she undergoes to make things right.
