Featured Interview With Matthew Paris
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Growing up, I loved Texas and the city of Houston. I had a very normal childhood. I played sports and graduated from high school. After high school, I attended Texas Tech University, where I majored in English Literature. College is where I learned about the form of writing and there are many different forms depending on what project you are working on.
I lived in Austin for about 14 years writing a few books and writing articles for The Sports Column. I have written over 300 articles and I’m the most widely read author on the column. I don’t have any pets as of now. However, I did grow up with a few dogs. If I had to have any pet it would be another dog. They get excited when you show up at the house. They’re happy to see you.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always had a fascination with storytelling, no matter what form. It could be books or movies. My favorite book is “I am Legend.” The author, Richard Matheson really wrote it well and did a great job putting you into the main character’s mind. The loneliness he felt and the need to survive. I think we can all relate to that.
I really hadn’t had any thought of writing when I was younger. I did really well in English class. My sophomore year of high school my English teacher came to me and said, “You are doing really well in this class. I think this is a talent and you should pursue this.” I was very nice about it and said thank you. However, I really didn’t get serious about it until college.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I like Richard Matheson, Chuck Palahniuk, and Stephen King. I like stories that keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m a big fan of “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk. The movie was great too. However, the book puts you into the head of the narrator and never lets up. It’s a real page turner.
What Inspires me? I think life in general inspires me. I can go out into the world and hear someone say something or talk about something and I’ll have an idea right there. Sometimes, I’ll let my mind wonder and think of a subject that might be interesting to put down on paper.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’ve written six books and all are available on Amazon. my latest book, “Honor Among Players” is set during the 1994 NBA Finals. The two teams that played were the Houston Rockets vs. The New York Knicks. It is set over the course of several days between game six and seven. The story revolves around a middle school basketball player who wins tickets to game 7. His journey within those days. The book deals with issues like bullying and friendships and how the city of Houston came together during that championship run.
