Featured Interview With Liz Flaherty
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up on a farm in central Indiana with the intent of leaving the area as soon as was humanly possible. Several decades later, my husband, four cats, and I live happily back a long, gravel driveway six miles from the family farm. We also have a bunch of grandkids, the actual Magnificent Seven. Did you want to see pictures?
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I don’t remember when I wasn’t fascinated by books, and by the time I was nine, I knew I wanted to write them. (I also wanted to be rich, famous, and reclusive–none of those panned out.)
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love reading Kristan Higgins, Nan Reinhardt, Janie DeVos…so many more than I can name. While romance was my first love, women’s fiction has taken over the top spot in my reader’s heart.
As an essayist who’s released one–and almost two–collections of newspaper columns and blog posts, I love slice-of-life essays, too.
I am inspired by everyone who sticks to it. My favorite piece of paper is one on which author Muriel Jensen wrote, “Never give up. Never, ever give up. I didn’t. Thank you, Muriel.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
In THE HEALING SUMMER, when Steven Elliott accidentally rides his bike into Carol Whitney’s car at the cemetery, the summer takes on new and exciting possibilities. Long friendship wends its way into something deeper when their hearts get involved. Feelings neither of them had expected to experience again enrich their days and nights. But what happens when the long summer ends? When Carol wants a family and commitment and a future, Steven isn’t so sure. He’s had his heart broken before—can he risk it again?
THE HEALING SUMMER is a sequel to ONE MORE SUMMER, still a book of my heart, and was one of my favorite ever books to write. Steven and Carol are broken, which is just how I like start, and the joy of putting them together again–albeit with some of the pieces a little crooked and scarred–is beyond measure.
