Featured Interview With Liela Marie Fuller
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Liela Marie Fuller. I was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey and I now live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I come from a loving family and I was primarily raised by my Mom, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother. I learned so much from these amazing women but growing up, most of what they taught me were not something I welcomed. They taught me how to cook, clean, and things I never thought I would use, like how to tie a tie. It was at their kitchen table where my love for writing began; My Mom, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother lived together for a long time. Back then my stories were simple ones, fairy tales mostly but I found my true voice in high school. What was once short fairy tales, became poetic words that allowed me to express love, fear, joy, and sadness. Writing helped me through one of the hardest times in my life – losing my first love. After processing that loss, I realized that I found my voice through writing and I have not stopped writing, it’s just taken on many forms.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started writing in elementary school around age 7. I started making up stories about princesses and princes because like most little girls I was fascinated with the idea of a knight in shining armor so that’s what my stories were all about. As I grew up, my writing developed into other areas.
My fascination with books started in high school. I fell in love with books like Beowulf, Macbeth, and The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I devoured books and even now if I see a book, I want I add it to my list of books to read. Now, I have an Amazon wants list full of books but back then I would visit the library frequently to get new books. I love books so much that my dream home has a large library full of books, chairs, and bean bag chairs for people to relax and read. In fact, any home I purchase will need to have a space for my books.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors to read change frequently as I discover new authors but here are a few from my current list: Robert Herjavec, Maya Angelou, Nikki Giovanni, Zari Banks, Mark Batterson, William Shakespeare, and John Eckhardt.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called Bag Lady. It’s a short story that I wrote after prayer several years ago. I was thinking about all the baggage we tend to carry around with us and how if we are not careful that baggage can affect other areas of our lives. Bag Lady is my first short story and I originally intended for it to be a play, but after sitting on it for a while, I released it as a short story and the readers love it. The main character, Bag Lady, has received an invitation to a new place and it’s something she’s been praying for but when she gets the invitation, the invitee tells her she must leave her baggage behind. The story follows her reluctance to give away what she’s carried around for so long.
