Featured Interview With Laura Heffernan
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in California, but after living in Boston for several years, I fell in love with a Canadian and we wound up in upstate New York. We live in a house ruled by two cats who kindly let us stay with them.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been fascinated with books since I was a little kid. I would insist that people read The Giant Jam Sandwich over and over. When they all got sick of it, I learned to read it myself.
My first short story was written at 5. My writing has improved substantially since then.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I could spend all day listing my favorite authors, but the all time top 3 are probably J.K. Rowling, Tamora Pierce, and Sophie Kinsella. Rom com is my favorite genre, and I could spend all day listing authors in that genre I love to read.
Authors that have inspired me include Sophie Kinsella, Jane Green, Emily Giffin, Jennifer Weiner, Alison Winn Scotch, Leah Marie Brown, and Michele Gorman.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
After Jen loses her job, her boyfriend, and her home, she is cast on a reality show where she hopes to win the cash prize but finds she also wants to win the heart of fellow contestant Justin.
I’ve always been a big fan of reality TV and romantic comedies. After my best friend starred on a show the summer of 2013, I started thinking about what type of show might interest me. About a year later, I started writing. Taking a page from NaNoWriMo, I challenged myself to write 50,000 words in a month. The entire first draft took about 6 weeks. Editing took… a bit longer. 🙂 But I had a great time writing the book, and it’s a fun read.
