Featured Interview With Kyle Stück
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Kyle Stück and I was born and raised in the jungles of Ecuador. I now reside in the Ozarks and write a mixture of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and Weird fiction. No pets at the moment but someday I’d love to have a dog and cat.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’m not sure how old I was but in 8th grade my family temporarily left Ecuador to live in the United States. Before school started, I had a whole summer where I didn’t know anyone or have much to do, so I started reading to fight the anxiety and sadness of starting life over in a place where I didn’t feel like I belonged. It was a lonely time but that’s when I fell in love with reading and am eternally grateful to all those books for keeping me company. In college I took a screenwriting class and fell in love with it, but it wasn’t really till after I graduated that I got serious about writing. My first year out I started writing poetry and soon after I started working on comics; after that came short stories. I love them all but comics are where I feel most comfortable.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorites to read include Richard Matheson, John Langan, Christopher Moore, Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, Manly Wade Wellman, and Thomas Merton. My favorite genres to read are horror, theology, Weird fiction, and fantasy. I like almost every genre though if the story is good! Algernon Blackwood, Robert Chambers, and Brian Jacques are probably the biggest inspirations in my actual writing.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Evil Cast is a comic book bathed in blood and self-awareness and a love letter to horror, its conventions, and its fans. Think Evil Dead meets Scooby Doo. It’s illustrated by Enrico Orlandi, creator of Dark Horse’s The Flower of the Witch and features the recreation of classic horror movie posters for each issue. Folks have said it’s a must-read for fans of the genre; deaths are bloody, jokes are sharp, and horror easter eggs abound. I started working on it in 2018 and in 2021 we finished the 6th issue. After that, we created a pitch doc and started shopping it around. In 2022 we found a publisher and now in 2023 it’s finally coming out (begins to weep). It was a LOT of work but I learned so much over the past couple of years about writing, comics, and collaboration and am excited to apply that knowledge as I continue to work on Evil Cast: Volume 2 and my many, many other projects. Hopefully I can sleep a little more this time…
