Featured Interview With Ky Bateman
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Through a quirk – which his doctor’s insist is a mental illness – Ky’s nightmares have had a coherent plot and character development since he was a teenager. Now, he is writing them down.
Experts agree, they will feature heavily in his murder trial.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
At age fourteen Ky and his brother completed Final Fantasy 9 on PS-1. From then, he was determined to write a sprawling fantasy with an ensemble cast.
Once he learnt that copyright was a thing, he decided to create his own characters instead.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Richard Matheson, of I am Legend fame, is largely the author I seek to emulate. His economy of words allows a vivid, and downright frightening, image to be conveyed in a short sentence. Sadly, this is something lacking from the Fantasy genre as a whole, where authors are prone to expansive world-building passages, or gigantic tomes chock full of what foods the characters are eating.
I aim to fix this and bring a Thriller style of writing to the Epic Fantasy genre.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Fear the Cold is a vivisection on the corpse of the hero archetype. It is a world of consequence and danger, where a soldier is more likely to flee from battle than rise to the occasion. It is a harsh and realistic version of a fantasy world that aims to rekindle the sense of wonder and magic which the latest slew of “grim-dark” fantasy has butchered and buried.
