Featured Interview With Krystal Fernandes
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Krystal Fernandes and I am a children’s books author. I was born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts and I still currently reside here. The area has a lot of history to it, and some spots are truly beautiful. I also don’t think I could live anywhere other than New England solely because we get to experience all four seasons! I would never want to only experience one season year round. I like a little bit of everything.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always loved books and reading, but writing is something I’ve always had a passion for. Even as a young child, I’d say around nine or ten years old, I began writing stories. Some were written in rhyme and others were not. In my younger years, I dreamed I would become a published author, but of course I didn’t really think it would become a reality. For me, being an author isn’t about being the most famous or bringing in a ton of money- it’s about sharing my stories with the world. It’s about knowing that some child, somewhere, is curling up with my book and smiling because of the words I wrote. It’s about those moments when a grown-up sits down to take the time to read to a child. Just knowing you might be one child’s favorite author. That’s why I enjoy writing children’s books. That is what it’s truly all about.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I’ve always looked up to Dr. Seuss as an author and enjoyed reading his many books. I admire his ability to write a tale and carry out a plot, all written in rhyme. I think that is why strive to do the same. I feel like it’s a lost art and, not only do I get to tell a story, but I earn the chance to rise to the challenge of telling that entire story in rhyme.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
To date, I have two published books. My first story is called Jasper the Bold (ish) and it outlines the many fears a boy has- even though he claims he is the bravest around. It’s a lighthearted tale, written in rhyme, that exhibits the reality of fears, but does so in a humorous way. The most recent book that’s made its way to shelves is The Meany Monster. This monster spends her time trying to make Lucy feel terrible about herself. Its plot is geared towards teaching children self-love. I made the decision to use the uncommon spelling of “meanie” for a reason. If you read the story, you just might be able to figure out why!
