Featured Interview With Kelly Meister-Yetter
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in a suburb of Toledo, Ohio, and still live in the area. My husband and I have four cats in the house, four domestic ducks in the back yard, and we lease a horse at a local equine rescue facility. My love of animals started at a young age. I enjoyed having hamsters, and the occasional cat would wander in and get adopted. Unfortunately, though, my mother could never see her way clear to getting me what I *really* wanted: a pet lion! LOL
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading at a young age, and have loved books my whole life. I started writing in grade school. I would take a fancy to a certain subject (usually weird ones for my age group, like death row, the electric chair, those men-of-war that live in the ocean and sting people), and write my own little books on the subject, complete with illustrations. Thankfully, my subject matter is much more pleasant to write about (and to read!) nowadays.
When I’m not hunched over a computer keyboard, I rescue and care for animals in need. I volunteer at a horse rescue facility, and advocate for animals, donating my time and resources to a number of animal welfare organizations. Best Friends Animal Society is one of my favorites because they have had so much success in improving the lives of our animal friends.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love non-fiction. Travel narratives by Bill Bryson top the list, along with the memoirs of my favorite critter-writer Bob Tarte, who has more pets than you can shake a stick at! I think the last count was 50+ animals in his care. C.A. Wulff also writes great animal narratives, and is a fellow champion of animal welfare causes. I would highly recommend those three writers! And, of course, you can’t top Stephen King for fiction! The Shining is my all-time favorite King book!
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book (No Better Medicine) is the follow up to my first critter-themed memoir (Crazy Critter Lady). In it, I detail my experiences with some really fun animals that I have known and loved. I share stories about cats, ducks, horses, dogs – you name it, I’ve written about it! No Better Medicine also explores my acquisition of a husband who seemed to think that he was at the top of the totem pole. You can imagine his horror when he learned that the critters come first! LOL
