Featured Interview With Julia K. Poulet
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in the German countryside and I had the best childhood ever with lots of playing outside and running through the fields. I moved out from home to study and have lived in several different places and countries since including a year in Edinburgh which was amazing. I live in Leipzig now and share a flat with my partner, who has up to now vetoed my wish to own a cat.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was always a bookworm and read a lot. I started writing stories when I was eight and I wrote my first book (a high fantasy YA novel) when I was 13, giving it to a few friends of mine in daily installments.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I am a massive fan of V.E. Schwab and Maggie Stiefvater. But I also like Terry Pratchett and the world he created and I enjoy reading the classics more than any sane person should. Inspiration comes from so many different people that I can hardly put my finger on it. My favourite genre to read would probably be fantasy, though I prefer the fantastic angle on our world to actual high fantasy with a whole different world as the setting.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Prodigy” is my debut novel. It’s near future Sci-Fi. My friend Josh sent me an e-mail telling me about a violin theft in Berlin. Somehow this mixed with the current climate debate and ended up becoming this story. There’s a lot of music in it, because music is extremely important to me (I play seven instruments myself). It’s also not truly dystopian in my eyes. Society has changed a lot and puts an unhealthy emphasis on productivity – something that already happens on a much smaller scale today – and doesn’t allow for much personal growth and freedom, but the scientific progress is good. Without it, people would never have survived the climate catastrophe. In this setting, we meet Robyn, who is a street kid and lives the life of the Pointless – those people who did not fit in with the system. We also meet Akira, who is a world class violinist and a musical prodigy. They are almost complete opposites in character and their circumstances are also vastly different. But the reader soon learns that both of them are stuck. “Prodigy” is a coming of age story, a story about breaking free and finding your own way.
I started writing “Prodigy” in April 2019 and I had the finished book in my hands at the beginning of 2020. In between lay so many revisions and so many changes. Josh helped a lot, as did a few other friends – one of whom provided me with feedback during an hour-long train ride and I took notes with people around me staring at me weirdly as I said things like “Okay, more info about zip-cabs, got it. Explain more about the village… will do…”
