Featured Interview With Juan Carlos Hoyos
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Cali and lived there until I was 17 years old. Now I live in Bogotá since 1982.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was lucky to study in a bilingual, gringo school, which had a huge library with 20,000 books. My first grade teacher took us to the children’s section to read and noticed that I did not choose any book. She approached me and asked why? I replied that I had already read them all. She didn’t believe me and took me around the shelves suggesting several, but I could tell him what each book was about. Then he saw that I was telling the truth and he took me, I still remember going through that corridor, to the “grown up” section and told the librarian, as something special, to let me get books out of there. A huge world opened up for me. I have always been an insatiable reader. However, I believed that I wanted to be an architect. In high school they gave us an exam, with a number 2 pencil, which was reviewed by a computer, and the results said that I had a vocation as a writer, but I did not give any credit to the exam. When I was already in my 5th semester of architecture I made a change to Literature, and I have been writing seriously since then (1984).
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I read mostly philosophy and history. Authors like Herodoto, or Nietzsche really inspire me.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
New Arts, Eighth and Ninth, is and essay that took me 25 years of thinking and practicing as a transmedial artist.
