Featured Interview With Jay DeMaarten
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I live in Toronto and spent some time in Japan and Trinidad. I consider myself to be a bit of an introvert so social distancing and staying at home actually suits me fine, although I miss being in the midst of hustle and bustle on occasions. I don’t have any pets at the moment although I like the idea of having one.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was always fascinated with books, but it is only within the last few years I have dedicated myself to writing fiction. CARNIA is my first published work. I’ve actually been working on a much longer science fiction novel for some years now, but CARNIA is the precursor. I’m especially into dystopian fiction, and I would really like to see what sort of novels and stories come out of this current crisis. I’d much rather write or read about a world devastated by a virus than be actually living in one (fingers crossed).
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I honestly don’t have a favorite set per se, but I like Octavia Butler’s works, especially the ones about a post apocalyptic society affected by disease. I really also enjoyed 1984 George Orwell.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The novelette, CARNIA, is actually my first published work. I’ had been working on it since January this year, and within a month I finished the manuscript. It took another month or so to get it edited and formatted. At the moment it’s not up on any of the major retail sites, but it’s available for download on BookFunnel.
It’s basically about this youth who wants to find a mate in a world where mating and pairing is tightly controlled. So it’s interesting to see how he navigates this world to achieve his goal. He is a sort of underdog because nobody sees much in him, including girls. But fights to prove them wrong.
