Featured Interview With J. K. Barber
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
J. K. Barber is pen name to Jay and Katie Barber. We grew up mostly in Atlanta, GA, moved to Fort Collins, CO for a few years while I (Katie) finished college. We moved back to Atlanta after I graduated to be close to our family.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
As a young teen I fell in love with fantasy books. I started writing in high school. Horrible horrible poetry! I joined the editing team for my school’s literary magazine “The Pen” and then went on to college to study English: creative writing.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Jim Butcher, R. A. Salvatore, Richard Knaak, and George R. R. Martin. Fantasy is my favorite genre. I am inspired by imagination and my kiddos, whose bright smiles and fresh minds open my mind.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Two days ago, my husband and I released our dark mermaid fantasy, “Mervidia.” Imagine “The Little Mermaid” meets dark elf society. The whole book takes place in the midnight zone of the ocean, so there is no sun. No humans. Seven races of what we call merwin live in a house-based society and are constantly scheming and grasping for power. When the last member of the royal line is brutally assassinated, the city of Mervidia goes into a frenzy, fighting over the crown.
