Featured Interview With Hayden Winston
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA where I received a strict Caribbean upbringing (my dad is from the island of Trinidad and my mom is from Saint Lucia). I grew up in the city and the nearby suburb of Glendale, where I first began copy writing after graduating from high school. I dropped out of community college in 2009, but went on to graduate summa cum laude from Purdue with a BSc in Criminal Justice this past fall. I currently live in Northern California with my husband and our cattle dog mix.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always been fascinated with reading for as long as I can remember, but I first became enthralled with writing at about age 10. I had these weekly journal assignments in school that I could not wait to complete. I even used to read them aloud to my family for critiques.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors include James Baldwin, George Orwell, and Haruki Murakami. I love a multitude of genres from true crime to sci-fi, but I especially enjoy reading dystopian fiction. I like that has greatly inspired my work.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Wildflowers is an evocative exploration of humanity’s inner craving for stability and the fragility of life. Set in the fictional town of Hunter, California, the story follows a queer, depressive, college dropout named Ansel Wallis, as he returns from Philadephia to attend his grandfather’s funeral and face his estranged family. The book took me about eight years to write, including edits.
