Featured Interview With Guillaume Maximin
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in France. Not the flashy touristic side, nor into an elegant city, but into a small town surrounded by cows and flat fields. I tried my best to escape into the world. As soon as I could, I started traveling around, making it a way of life. First within France, then within Europe, studying in north England and working in Spain. Eager for more, my career took me all around Asia, where I eventually met my wife and founded a family. We’re now living in Shanghai.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
From a very young age, I had a lot of ideas passing but getting stuck in my mind. So many that writing became the only way to take some of the noise out. The love of book became a consequence of this writing. One day I realized that great authors could shape their writing into amazing books, that not only channel raw ideas, but could inspire and create beauty.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My inspiration comes from all kind of writing. A fundamental author I couldn’t drop books of was James Ellroy. Another source of inspiration were american black and white graphic novels writers such as Frank Miller, Daniel Clowes or Dave McKean, In parrallel, chinese philosophy and poetry greatly impacted the way I perceive writing and structure. Li Qingzhao, Lao Zi, Mana’s epics, so many different ways of delivering an idea. Apart from classic literature, I’m also a huge fan of commercial literature, and especially leaflets. I have a huge collection of leaflets I gather from around the world, with so many different approaches from so many different culture. A real reflection of human diversity in presenting simple ideas. I even published some of these leaflets on my website, they are true gems…
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called “Hell Lingering Within”. It is a deep dive into mid-age crisis. The concept started with a very simple idea: how to balance youth’s idealistic ambitions with adults responsibilities. There’s a struggle here, a struggle out of which one has to give in somehow. For the book, I decided to make that struggle a bit more physical, with the youth’ inner self actually escaping and physically fighting against its older self. So the result is a psychological thriller, with guts out in the open… The hardcover is available through my editor at Effy Creations (https://effycreations.com), and the digital version can be purchased on most platforms, Smashwords, Kobo, Amazon and Google Play.
