Featured Interview With Florence Osmund
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in a small town in northern Illinois, then moved to downtown Chicago where I lived for close to 30 years. I recently moved back to the far north suburbs, with my 20-year-old feline friend Miska, where I live on a tranquil lake–the perfect setting to write more books.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I knew from an early age that I wanted to write novels in my retirement. With that in mind, for years I jotted down my thoughts on possible story lines and stashed each one in a cardboard box. When it came time to start writing (at the tender age of 60) I sorted through these hundreds of scraps of paper and several stories emerged. I wrote my first four books based on these earlier thoughts.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love literary fiction, where the story is character driven (as opposed to plot driven) and challenges my own value system and beliefs. Margaret Atwood could be my favorite.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My current project “Nineteen Hundred Days” will be released in March and is told by a young man looking back to when he was twelve and his sister was six and they were left to fend for themselves when their parents didn’t come home after work one day. It usually takes me five months to write the first draft of a book. I wrote this one in five weeks. It also required the least amount of editing of any of my books. I can’t explain it.
