Featured Interview With Dr. Dawn Menge
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Dr. Dawn Menge has won fort-one national awards as the author of the Queen Vernita educational series. She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction, a master’s degree and a Clear Credential in moderate/severe disabilities, and a bachelor’s degree in human development. Dr. Menge has been teaching severely handicapped students for nineteen years. She has three children and five beautiful grandchildren and lives in Southern California.
I grew up in a small town in the mountains . We snow skied in the winter and hiked in the summer. We camped a lot when I was young and my parents owned a sailboat for many years .
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was young I had trouble reading . My father sat down with me every night in the third grade and read with me. I started writing Queen Vernita when I was working on my credential . It was assignment in my math class . Queen Vernita’s visitors is named after my grandmother and all of her adventures are my real adventures . She visits with a new friend each month of the year and each book is about a different region in her kingdom.
The Queen’s adventures has won 41 awards including inclusion in the conquering Disabilities through film, Action on Film and Hollywood Dreams Megafest in Vegas .
The Queen has traveled to the Blue Ice Mountains, Gator country, learned Astronomy with Sir HeathyBean, Baja Quails, had a magical train ride with Santa 🎅 and Conquered the Volcanic Islands.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My writings are a mixture of Dora the Explorer and Magic school bus. My personal life experiences and my friends inspire my adventures .
I enjoy reading Stephen King, and Nancy Drew, The Box car children and the outsiders when I was growing up .
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I’m currently finishing a pre-K-1 grade book based on our family trips to Jalama beach . There will be kite flying, sand castle making , wind surfing , raccoons , an Ostrich Farm , and S’More making .
I am also working on a book based on The Haceinda Linda in Tucson, Arizona . This will be a 6th grade level based on the desert environment . The Queen and Chango will learn about Hummingbirds , the Day of the Dead, The Festival of Lights, and The Queen will ride a camel on her birthday .
I just released a pre-K-1st grade book on a train ride with Santa. The Queen and Virginia the Conductor sing with Sam the music man, Bobby the Bandit , make toys in Santa’s workshop , and visit with Santa himself in December .
