Featured Interview With Donna Brown
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and have since lived all over the country. I now live in Barnsley, South Yorkshire with my husband, Dave, and our six rescue cats. Our cats – Mr Kain, Razz, Buggles, Charlie, Bilbo and Frodo – have inspired us in many ways, so we began writing our Feline Central book series in 2012.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Like most writers, I’ve been writing for many years and started as a kid. I started with poetry and short stories. More recently I’ve begun writing novellas. I love short fiction and novellas offer a great opportunity to develop characters more fully, while still presenting a concise, compelling story.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Stephen King, John Grisham, Terry Pratchett, Roald Dahl, Sophie Hannah. Too many to mention and covering a lot of the genres! I enjoy thrillers but I’m just as happy to dive into non-fiction or romance or short stories.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Playing House is a novella featuring a couple going through a divorce. On paper they have one last loose end to tie up. In reality, there are a lot of dangling threads. The question is whether those threads will finally unravel or if there’s enough love left to allow them to reconnect.
This was a hard book to write because I loved the characters and really felt for them, even though I was the one putting them through hell! Ultimately, though, I think that made it a better book. I want my characters to be flawed, it doesn’t work if they’re too saintly, but at the same time I want people to feel for them when they have to face tough situations.
