Featured Interview With Ayana Prende
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m Ayana Prende, an author of romance and erotic literature. I was born and bred in the south east of England, which is where, some thirty years later, I still live. I do, however, love to travel. And, when circumstance permits, I’d love to move abroad – preferably to a much warmer climate!
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve been in love with books since I first learned to read. Apparently (I was too young to remember), my grandparents used to say that, at the age of three, I wanted a typewriter, because I’d decided to write. As my nana told it, they did buy me a children’s typewriter, and I was terribly disappointed to discover that you couldn’t just tap any old key; the typewriter didn’t actually write the story for you. Nowadays, I’ve exchanged the typewriter for a computer, but I still occasionally find myself tapping any old key and wishing the story would be written for me!
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I like to read a whole host of things, from classics like the Brontes, Jane Austen, Wilkie Collins and Victor Hugo, right through to Stephen King and Dan Brown. I do love historical fiction, so I’m also drawn to Hilary Mantel and Robert Harris. Reading ‘An Officer and a Spy’, although the themes of the novel have nothing to do with the themes of my own, did serve as inspiration for the “world” of my début novel.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
‘The Anatomy of Desire’ is a historical erotic/romance, set in late Victorian London. It’s told from the perspective of the recently married Katherine, whose deep-seated fears have rendered her unable to consummate her marriage. Eventually, her husband grows impatient and sends her to a Harley Street doctor. Katherine knows she will be diagnosed with “hysteria” and dreads the treatments she’s likely to endure. However, as her husband grows increasingly intolerant, she’s left with no option but to open herself to the stranger who promises he can help her.
