Featured Interview With Amara L. Russell
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hi, my name is Amara Russell, I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, which is where I currently reside. I currently attend Full Sail University, pursuing my BFA in Creative Writing. I am engaged to a great guy! I have two wonderful children and an amazing and smart grandson. We have a Yorkie, name Bentley, who keeps us on our toes. I have one sibling, we are thirteen years apart. I have been writing since the age of ten. Writing is my passion, I love creating characters that my readers can relate too and developing interesting story lines, that inspire.
My hobbies include, reading, writing, journaling, cooking, and spending time with family. I also love to watch movies, my down time includes a nice relaxing day at the spa. I pray about everything, God is my go to!
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I would say age ten. I read every book in sight. By age 13, I was writing for a Children’s Institute and had a mentor. My imagination would just take off, characters would begin to live inside of me, mentally I was building story lines feeling every emotion and could no longer contain all of that within me. I poured my thoughts out onto paper. By high school I was creating short stories, plays, and scripts for my friends and family to read. They would pass the notebooks around school, anticipating the next one to come. I was the kid that loved writing essays and could not wait to bring stories to life during test time!
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have so many, but two that stand out, are Kimberla Lawson Roby and Eric Jerome Dickey. My favorite Genre is Fiction. When I write, I am inspired by people and what’s going on around me.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
A Rare Diamond, my debut novel teaches us all to use the wisdom and insight from within to learn to trust in the plan that God has for our lives. No matter how difficult our circumstances become, never give up—you have the power to make the choice to do whatever it takes to accomplish your dreams.
Readers will meet Celeste, the novel’s startling wise, kind, smart, and inspirational main character, and will follow along with her as she navigates the ins and outs of growing up, all while her faith is tested through many challenges, pain, and suffering. Having lost her mother at the age of five, Celeste was raised by her father and three older brothers. Like many of us, Celeste suffers setbacks—tragedy, broken friendships, and discovering true love, to name a few—yet she learns from her mistakes and always overcomes, as she takes on life by being the light to those around her.
As readers explore, in depth, the challenges Celeste faces, women and men, both young and old alike, will find themselves smiling, laughing, and no doubt shedding a few tears.
