Featured Interview With Michael Falls

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Espanola Ontario Canada, and adopted at an early age, raised in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario but moved to Alberta in my late teens where I currently still reside. I am recently widowed so at present it’s just me and dog Frankie. Since my earliest memories I have had words and ideas running rampant through my mind , often making concentration on other task difficult , as a child I didn’t recognize it either a gift or a talent and i would be well into middle age before putting pen to paper and paper and releasing those words. For the most part I consider what I write to be lyrics, I had to pushed in the poetic direction , granted in some cases , mine especially , not much separates the two and the bulk of my inspiration come from modern Era lyricist such as Kurt Cobain, Mark Lanegan , Jim Morrison and Gary Numan to name a few .I lean toward the darker side of our existence , like a lonesome stroll on a deserted beach in late fall when the lake is still and the water black.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
It started with comic books when I was perhaps 8 years old and eventually matured to novels like Hardy Boys and Tarzan , later into adulthood it would be Stephen King, Dean Kuntz and the Mother of all fantasy , Lord of the Rings. I always imagined myself as a writer and I did periodically approach the idea but I think I lacked the maturity and had yet to experience the things that eventually define my writing, any serious attempts would occur until 2017, they continue til present day.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
As stated earlier I do lean more to music and in fact have never really read poetry, I consider Stephen King’s The Stand to be one of our times great literary works, also Twilight Eyes by Dean Kuntz , great reading but don’t inspire my writing, that comes from Nirvana unplugged, Mark Lanegan Bubblegum, Blind Melon Soup, or my all time favorite song since I was 15 years old All Mixed Up by The Cars.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book , like its predecessor , is a collection of dark and often introspective poetry that although personal still are very relatable to all readers, especially any who’s ever dealt with depression and loss. Hence the title Walking Through The Ruins.

Featured Interview With Sarah P. Blanchard

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a New England farmer at heart, raised on a dairy-and-horse farm in Connecticut. I’ve also lived on the Big Island of Hawaii and in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where several of my short stories and my debut novel, Drawn from Life, is set.
I earned a B.A. in English from the University of Connecticut and an M.B.A. from Nichols College, before working for many years in communications and marketing. On side journeys, I’ve also been a volunteer firefighter, radio news anchor, talk show host, magazine editor, website developer, horse trainer, grantwriter, and facilities supervisor for a large astronomy observatory. I also taught English and communications for five years at the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
I’m now dividing my time between western North Carolina and northeastern Connecticut, where my husband and I have family. I have a horse named Cody and a (very) small dog, a poodle-shitzu mix named Mitzi.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I can’t remember how old I was when I began reading, but I clearly remember devouring my mother’s collection of Reader’s Digest condensed books the summer I was ten, while tending my vegetable stand in the front yard. I began writing stories around the same time. My first writing award came in seventh grade, when I won a statewide prize for nonfiction prose and decided I was hot stuff. After many years in the corporate world, I began writing (serious) fiction and realized I needed to work a lot harder on my craft. Several of my poems and stories have been published, and the story “Playing Chess with Bulls” was a finalist for the 2021 Doris Betts Fiction Prize. I’m active in several writers’ groups and workshops.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Rural life and the natural world have strongly influenced my writing, as have the works of Southern writers Barbara Kingsolver, Charles Frazier, and Ron Rash. I also love the British mysteries of Ann Cleeves and Elizabeth George. Joyce Carol Oates and Margaret Atwood are my inspirations for the darker aspects of human nature.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
After reading a 2017 article in The New Yorker (“The Shame and Sorrow of the Accidental Killer” by Alice Gregory), I became intrigued by the various ways people deal with moral injury. I began writing a story about two young women who are also cousins, one haunted by guilt and the other seemingly unencumbered by a conscience. The story became the novel Drawn from Life, set in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It also explores themes of bullying, family loyalty, secrets and betrayals. Begun during the pandemic, it took me almost four years to write–mostly because it turned from a mostly literary exploration of moral injury into a high-stakes psychological mystery.

Here’s the back-cover blurb:
Life-changing tragedy. Conflicting memories. Is she a killer or a victim?
Emma Gillen is haunted by guilt. Almost a decade after surviving a deadly car crash, she’s held hostage by long-term damage to her body and no recollection of that tragic event. Then her volatile cousin Lucy returns, needing money and bringing chaos. Emma must decide if she should bargain with the beautiful, untrustworthy Lucy—a possible witness to the crash—to uncover their shared past.
All bargains carry risk. As Lucy grows more desperate and greedy, Emma suspects there’s more at stake than just money. Struggling with shame, night terrors, and her own unreliable memory, Emma accepts help from a compassionate detective. But the choice remains hers alone: Can she find the strength to free herself from the danger of her cousin’s destructive power, or will Lucy bring everything crashing down?
Kirkus Reviews calls Drawn from Life a “skillfully executed story of suspense with compellingly complex characters….A well-crafted thriller about memories regained.”

Featured Interview With Joyce A. Connelley

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and later moved the Bay Area where I lived for over 30 years. In 2005 my husband and I relocated to the DFW area where we now live. We acquired a long-established organic gardening store in Fort Worth called Marshall Grain Company, founded in 1946. Since then, we have expanded into landscape design and installation and developed it into the leading organic garden center in the DFW area. Under my leadership as Vice President of Marketing, Marshall Grain Co. has been ranked nationally as a Top 100 independent garden center and is one of the largest independent organic garden centers in Texas. I have been personally honored by a number of civic organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, for my advocacy in the fields of environmental awareness, conservation, and sustainability, as well as a proponent of animal welfare causes. In addition to the 3 cats we have at home, we have 3 that live in our retail store and are often featured in our advertising and on our social media pages.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started secretly writing fiction in the middle of the night when I was about 8 or 10. By the time I was a sophomore in high school I knew I wanted to be a journalist. I worked on my high school paper and landed a job at 16 with the Whittier Daily News. Eventually I moved into technical writing for technology companies, and ultimately gravitated toward marketing writing. For over 20 years I supported myself as a freelance writer until we moved to Texas and acquired Marshall Grain. During my years as a freelancer, I published two books, both non-fiction. The first was a technology book called Bar Code and the IBM PC, co-written by myself and Russ Adams and published by Helmers Publishing in 1986. The other was one of a series of classroom history books written for those with reading difficulties published by David S. Lake.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite fiction genre is espionage, and of course, the master of that genre is John le Carre. Most of my reading, however, is in non-fiction categories: history, archaeology, and other sciences. I love American classics such as Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and John Steinbeck’s East of Eden.
One of my favorite authors is Edgar Allen Poe. I also love the humor of James Thurber and Emma Bombeck.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“Reunion in Stringtown:Finding Faith, Family, and Healing” is the summation of more than 25 years of searching for my birth family and a lifetime of wondering who gave me up and why. I hope my story will help shatter the myths about adoption that it is somehow a “blessing” that you were unwanted and that your adopters are heroic saviors. In truth most adoptees are traumatized once by their original abandonment and abused again by the parents who supposedly “saved” them. My work attempts to show how we can become whole only by first acknowledging the truth and then by walking through the fire of recovery.

Shadows and Fury

About Shadows and Fury:

“Shadows and Fury” was born from my creative vision during my time in Oxford back in 1995. As both the writer and the illustrator, I poured my heart and soul into crafting each tale with intricate prose and bringing them to life with my own illustrations.

Within the pages of “Shadows and Fury,” readers will find themselves transported to a world where darkness and magic intertwine in captivating ways. Each story is a testament to the complexities of human nature, exploring themes of love, loss, and redemption.

Working on both the writing and the illustrations allowed me to fully immerse myself in the creative process, weaving together intricate plots and rich characters I invite readers to join me on a journey through enchanted forests, treacherous kingdoms, and the depths of the human soul.

“Shadows and Fury” is more than just a collection of fairytales; it’s a reflection of my passion for storytelling and my dedication to the craft of illustration. It’s my hope that this collection will inspire readers to rediscover the magic of fairytales and embark on their own creative adventures.

Featured Interview With Lauri Cruver Cherian

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
My name is Lauri Cruver Cherian. I am a proud native of Gig Harbor, Washington. I’ve resided in Texas for three decades teaching ESL to adults and children. I became an author in 2022 publishing my first book of poetry about growing up on the beach, my second book is about becoming brave. I’m about to publish my first children’s chapter book. I have a dog, Gracie. She sits beside me in her chair as I write.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
On the school bus in 3rd grade, my friend, Jenny and I used to share books. I started writing poetry in high school but didn’t pick it up again until COVID.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
As an elementary school teacher, I have loved Richard Scary, Jan Brett, Arnold Lobel and Maurice Sendak to name just a few of the classics. I enjoy historical fiction and just finished writing a book. I am inspired by relationships, family history, and by nature.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
I just published Brave as Thistles; it is a beautiful poignant book of poetry about becoming brave through the speed bumps in life. Look for my children’s chapter book, Four Anxious Armadillos coming this next month.

Featured Interview With Marie Moldovan

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a Saskatchewan native and Ontario immigrant. Some would call me a reverse snowbird, who feels most comfortable surrounded by snowcapped mountains.
Nomadic by nature, I am multifaceted and have mastered many skills. I dub myself a jack of many trades and master of some. However, because I have acquired a plethora of diplomas spanning the educational spectrum, my mother (May she be at peace) on the contrary would call me a professional student.
I accredit my adaptability to the training I received as a Canadian Forces medic, and My artistic ability to my family. Both attributes have aided me along my journey from points of homelessness and despair to place of stability and optimism I have arrived at today.
In 2018, I was diagnosed with service-related PTSD, and within the same breath of time became a widow.
Unresolved trauma, and the loss of my husband caused me to skirt the edges of insanity. Faced with losing complete touch with reality, I returned to writing and art.
In a sense writing and art saved my life, at least that’s my claim. Fortunately, for the world, my choice to embrace creation has led me to captain a new life as a publisher, illustrator, writer and artist.
I am the author of 20 years of Winter and currently run the publication organization, aptly named, I Ain’t Your Marionette. My book is an autobiographical collection of poetry and art. I published it in hopes to make a way for others who have suffered similar traumas to feel safe knowing that they are not alone nor are they to blame for their experiences. 20 Years of Winter is Marie’s source of empowerment offered to those victims to stand up to their perpetrators and to speak out against victim shaming.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
At an early age book became the highlight of my life. I over escaping into new worlds snd would read for hours. I wrote my first manuscript at 12.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
In the worn chambers of my beating heart, where hope whispers and ink nourishes my soul, I secretly shelter a love for words. As a child, I spun my imagination with the golden threads of prose, lost in the dark fairytale realm of Rumpelstiltskin, or the horrors of John Grisham. For me books were my secret doorways, portals to secret gardens and realms of mystery.

But now, I find myself a Ferryman of voices—the guide of narratives, the oarsman of reality. For I publish the words of others, those brave marionettes who bare their heart on the paper.

Michael Falls: His sentences are like symphonies, each a masterpiece of harmony.

Alycia Hodge: She grills emotions with metaphor — her lines sometimes medium rare and other times raw enough to stake a vampire.

Emma Hilson-Gregory: Her rhymes free the soul from darkness.

Joe Mykut: writes with child-like wonder.

Marten Hoyle: He gives voice to the lost souls of imagination.

Together, they form a constellation of inspiration—a celestial library where honesty and creativity dance, where ink-stained hearts find solace. And so, dear interlocutor, let us turn these pages together, for within them lies the magic of countless worlds.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
“20 Years of Winter” is my latest creation, it is a powerful collection of autobiographical poetry and that delves into the dark and challenging aspects of my life as a soldier. I published it in hopes to make a way for others who have suffered similar traumas to feel safe knowing that they are not alone nor are they to blame for their experiences. 20 Years of Winter is my source of empowerment offered to those victims to stand up to their perpetrators and to speak out against victim shaming.
