Featured Interview With Carolyn Watson dubisch

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m originally from New York and grew up just outside of New York City. I studied children’s book illustration at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and that’s where I met my husband, Mike Dubisch. Together we’ve traveled across the United States and around the world, had three kids, created a lot of art and written a lot of stories. Currently, we live in Mexico on the Pacific Coast and released our YA comic book “Deluge; The People That Melt in The Rain #1” (a series we’ve created together). It’s been receiving some rave reviews and we’re really excited about it!
We live in Mexico with our youngest child, Naomi, and have a very old dog we moved here with named Oscarr. We also have 4 Mexican street cats that we’ve taken in, and one cat that we sent off with our oldest daughter to live with her in Chicago. All the animal rescue we’ve been doing inspired my most recent children’s book, “The Lighthouse Cats of Mazatlán”. This book is very close to my heart. I teach art at a local elementary school and some of my students were kind enough to model as the characters for me, so I could base my illustrations on them.
My newest book is called “The Water Devil, The Dragon in The Closet, Issue #4”. This is the latest installment of “The Dragon in The Closet”, my long running children’s comic book series. It’s for middle grade readers and is full of monsters, magic, and adventure! I also run the story as a web comic on Comic Fury with weekly updates.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I started reading all the time around age 7 or 8, I suppose. It never seemed all that unusual when I was growing up in the 1980’s, but I guess it is now. I read as much as possible as a kid because my home life was something I wanted an escape from.
I started writing in high school and my creative writing teacher was very encouraging, she felt I could be a professional writer and was the first person to ever suggest such a thing. I was obsessed with pursuing art at the time and while I took writing classes in college, art was my focus.
Over time I realized it worked best for me to combine the two. I like to think visually and have art with my writing. However, I have done some professional writing that doesn’t have pictures. I used to be the Art and Crafts reporter for a local news journal in San Diego.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I enjoy reading a range of genres. For a while I was focused on memoirs, then I was reading any fiction or non-fiction set in Africa (for some reason that region always fascinates me), and lately I’m reading a lot of YA fiction. I’m reading a book by Sarah Rees Brennan called Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy Book 1). So far it’s fun and riveting and full of wit.
I also read about five picture books a week, because that’s the genre I write in and I try to keep up with graphic novels as well. My favorite one recently is Treasure in the Lake by Jason Pamment, It’s ghostly and magical and the art is stunning.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My new book is called “The Dragon in The Closet, The Water Devil, Issue 4” it’s the latest chapter in my long running middle grade comic book series.
In this new issue, Orin Bean and Dragon continue their journey north to the Realm of the Ice Goblins in their quest to undo Orin’s curse. However, a new and terrifying monster is chasing them.
Will they survive the attack of this powerful creature? Will they ever meet up with Orin’s Nana and his friend Lucy?
So far the Amazon reviews have been quite positive:

Kids’ book with dragons, magic and a whole lot of imagination…
“I think “The Dragon in the Closet: The Water Devil, Issue #4″ by Carolyn Watson-Dubisch is a captivating mix of fantasy and horror. I liked how the characters faced daunting challenges, and the subtle cliffhangers kept me eagerly turning the pages. Overall, I feel like it’s a must-read for anyone interested on a thrilling adventure in a vividly imagined world.”-Kat

Action Packed!
“A barrage of fantasy action. Colorful & dynamic. Great for young lovers of magic & imagination. I’ have loved this as a good read & inspiration when I was a kid.”- Steven Avila

Adventure, excitement and beautiful illustrations!
“What a beautiful book! I personally love dragons and thought that the illustrations ( especially the dragon ones) were so beautiful!
This magical story is a continuation of a fantasy adventure about a boy called Orin and his adventures with the dragon.
Mystical characters, magic, an exciting plot and stunning illustrations and dragons! What. More could you ask for!
Additionally, there are paths to be chosen too!
Check it out – it’s such a great book!”-ZN

Once Upon a Villa

About Once Upon a Villa:

In this wise, warm-hearted, witty, and LOL hilariously funny true account, New York Times bestselling author Andrew Kaplan tells what it’s like when he, his wife, and two-year-old son decided to chuck it all and live the fantasy in a villa by the sea in that extraordinary corner of the world – part international café society, part billionaires’ playground, part provincial France – that is the French Riviera.

Whether it’s matching wits with French bureaucracy, searching for the perfect bouillabaisse, encounters with con men, eccentric ex-pats, and Monaco’s royal family, partying with the international set on Onassis’ yacht, playing chess with a philosophical police chief, or adventures and friendships with the rich and famous and the presumably standoffish French, Once Upon a Villa will transport you to a fascinating and shrewdly-observed world that you will savor like your first-morning bite of pain au chocolate.

So pour yourself a glass of wine, open the book, and Santé!

Featured Interview With L. L. Nelson

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I’m a former librarian who has always loved books and escaping into new worlds or back into the past. Libraries & museums were always magical places for me growing up (and they continue to be). I grew up in Virginia surrounded by history, but I’ve lived all over the United States. Every place I’ve lived, I always try and visit the libraries, museums, and other local cultural places. Visiting those places usually leaves me inspired for a new novel. Currently though, I live in California and while my family doesn’t have any pets yet, my children beg me for one every day!

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve loved books since before I could read. As far back as I can remember, I’d hid in my closet with stacks of picture books or art books and just imagine stories about the people and places I was looking at. The first story I ever wrote was a short little story (only a few lines long) about Simba and Nala from the Lion King playing together. But I first started writing stories of my own when I was about 11. I wrote a weird little historical romance fantasy, loosely based on places I’d visited in Virginia, Romeo and Juliet, and the power of love, lol. It wasn’t very long, but I loved it.
Those threads of historical fiction, romance, and fantasy are still with me today in almost all of my stories.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have a wide variety of authors and genres that I enjoy reading. A shorter list would be what I don’t read (basically horror & dark (insert genre), but that’s it). Growing up and even more recently, I read a lot of books from authors like Madeleine L’Engle, Tamora Pierce, Rick Riordan, and even Diana Gabaldon.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
My upcoming book is called Modern Day Muses and it is the second book in the Tempus Viatores time travel series. The main characters Alexandra and Titus have survived the events of the first book in the series (Priestess of Herculaneum) and traveled back to Washington D.C. circa 2009. There, they are adjusting to their new lives—Alex as a time traveler and Titus as a Roman man thrust almost 2000 years into the future and far from his native Italy. However, Fortuna Atrox, the immortal they escaped in the first book, is still hunting them, determined to have her revenge. While the series is mainly historical fiction, this book is more contemporary and has more magical realism in it, as Alex and Titus explore a world where many of the myths and lore of the past are very much real.
This book took a little bit longer to write than the first one, probably about 3-4 months, mainly because mental health issues and the fact that I don’t usually write books set in the 21st century.

Featured Interview With Melissa Fowke

Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in Southern California. My love for the ocean and the weather here is something I am so thankful for when my parents came here to start a life from Scotland. I currently live in Huntington Beach, with my soulmate husband and 3 pets. 🙂 We have two cats and one soon to be 20 year old dog! Writing about Lucy, named after my mother as a child, and her love for her wee kitten was so easy, as I have always loved animals.

At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My fascination with books started when I used to pretend help my mother, who was an English Teacher, with correcting her students papers. Of course I was a wee one, and just played pretend; however, I loved imagining reading all the books she assigned her classes and eventually did when I was old enough to read. Reading relaxes me, takes me to another world, and soothes me.

Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love mysteries, historical period novels, detective series, suspense novels (LT Ryan, Dean Koontz, Faye Kellerman to name a few). I do tend to go towards historical period novels and detective series. My inspiration to write a children’s book were my parents who have both passed. I wanted to keep their memory alive in some way. My memories from trips to Scotland when I was young and their many stories inspired me. I also feel there is a lack of age appropriate children’s books today. I wanted the children in my life to experience the innocence and imagination of the books I grew up with.

Tell us a little about your latest book?
Lovable Lucy came to life in a period of a year. She was always in my mind after my mother passed; however, she came to fruition with the encouragement of my loving husband egging me on to create my dream and put it on paper. Lucy, a sweet, lovable, wee girl in Scotland finds a kitten in her garden. She is troubled about whether to tell her parents, as she wants to prove she can take care of the wee kitten. Her best friend, Johnny (inspired by my father), helps her in her quest. The story takes some twists and turns and eventually the reader is taught a valuable life lesson and is left with a good feeling of family and love.

Concerning Intelletual Suicide in The Human Race by Massimo Fantini

About Concerning Intelletual Suicide in The Human Race by Massimo Fantini:

Intellectual suicide corresponds to the more or less conscious decision to switch off the brain and renounce rational thought in favor of attitudes dictated by superstitions, by established habits, by prejudices, by common places. The effects of irrational choices – made with the brain switched off – can be devastating for oneself and for the others. Examples range from conformism, to religious superstitions, to ideological fundamentalism, just to name a few possibilities.

Tommaso, the protagonist of this debate, is the victim of his parents’ intellectual suicide, perpetrated through procreation. Procreation – the unilateral act by which a couple throws innocent individuals into the stillicidium of life, without weighing the consequences that the hell of existence will have on them – is the most heinous form of intellectual suicide in the human race, not least because of the scale of its consequences.

The author’s intention is to shine the spotlight on the one reality that unites us all, that accompanies our lives from birth until death, but which is casted to our periphery: the human condition.

Confronting Power and Chaos: the Uncharted Kaleidoscope of My Life

About Confronting Power and Chaos: the Uncharted Kaleidoscope of My Life:

~~~ “That one event, that one ten-minute car ride, radically bowled over my life’s kaleidoscope.”
What’s in a name?
Her trailblazer of a distant cousin forged a solitary, singular path during and after WWII. Unassuming and somewhat clueless, Christine eventually finds she has to do pretty much the same. A teen fully expecting her Midwestern life would be drab and ho-hum, she meets in Germany an elderly man who offered her a ride – and insight into a legacy she was going to rely on throughout her entire life.
Marrying the wrong guy, divorced, isolated, and responsible for four chronically ill children, she charged forward, brooking no fools to get her children the healthcare and education they richly deserved, even if that meant blackmailing the governor of Iowa. She took on the powers that be (including spooks invading her home for six months), while always striving for the career she pined for.
Throughout all the decades of financial and personal setbacks and the chaos that swirled around her, Christine’s legacy constantly beckoned her: to be worthy of that distant cousin, WWII’s most decorated courier, and of a timeless love story she witnessed.
Christine’s life journey, including her 12 years in Poland (her other homeland), is a stirring testament to determination, imagination, and the power of perseverance and of thinking out of the box.
~~~synopsis~~~

Confronting Power & Chaos: the Uncharted Kaleidoscope of My Life details how the impact of learning about my namesake and predecessor guided me through five decades of chaos. As a divorced, single parent, I had to deal with four chronically ill children, one of whom (my eldest daughter) developed the hormonal imbalance known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I had to appeal to her as the woman of grace I saw her as, as she dealt with bulimia and anorexia and so many suicidal thoughts/attempts as a teen and young adult.

Once I got all four of my children through college, the Great Recession hit, and I lost my last American job and home. Because I had researched my predecessor’s life and interviewed her remaining WWII associates, my subsequent biopic screenplay led me to Poland, our ancestral homeland. There I was finally allowed to follow my once chosen career as an editor.

This book exposes all the power plays that were thrown at me and I had to overcome with the help of men who – for whatever reason – saw bits of my predecessor in me.
