Featured Interview With Jo Ann V. Glim
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest on the island of Fidalgo in a town called Anacortes, Washington. It was an amazing place to spend a childhood in the 1950s. All kids were free to roam until dinner time because every mom was their own. We all knew we were safe. We enjoyed and respected the natural beauty that surrounded us. Sixty years later, even though life has taken many of us around the world, my classmates and I still enjoy a close bond and friendship.
Today, my husband and I (along with our rescued Scottie, Lucy) reside on the Suncoast of Florida (gulf side). Although different in so many ways, both communities “live the outdoors,” surrounded by water, beach-style living, and amazing neighbors.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was about 9 years old when I discovered Amelia Earhart. From that point on, I was hooked on reading adventures about real people.
I was always scribbling notes about something and being an only child, I had a head full of characters. The one that got me in trouble was the church mouse family I imagined during Sunday service. I think it was the giggling that caught me a “Mom talk” on the ride home.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
There are the established writers like McCullough (author of “John Adams”) and Indie writers like children’s author Mariana Llanos (Tristan Wolfe series and her latest “Staircase on Elm Street”) that have recently become favorite reads for me.
I love biographies and memoirs, adventures and history but I also like fiction: Dune, Harry Potter, The Hobbit. When I want to unwind, I prefer something lighthearted.
I just finished Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild.” I’m now reading Penny C. Sansevieri’s “52 Ways to Sell More Books.” For any authors reading this interview, I highly recommend Penny’s guide to help you plan your marketing goals.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Very excited to announce that “Begotten With Love” was chosen for FIRST PLACE – Biography (Published) at the Florida Writers Association 2014 Royal Palm Literary Awards banquet in Orlando in October.
After thirty years of research and travel to two continents, “Begotten With Love” became a sometime turbulent, sometime rollicking true story spanning one hundred-fifty years of American history and five generations of family. It brings to life each generation letting the reader live the experiences as the characters and plots unfold. As one of our fans put it, “It reads like fiction, but it’s not!” Trust me, you will not look at grandma and grandpa the same, again.
