Weaponization of Ignorance: How Lies and Misinformation Divided America by Stephen M. Fry, Ph.D.

In an age when Americans can’t even agree on reality, Weaponization of Ignorance exposes how our political crisis was engineered. Through clear explanations and compelling real-world examples, Stephen M. Fry, Ph.D., reveals how cognitive biases, emotional reasoning, partisan media, and deliberate disinformation have created a parallel universe of belief—one in which lies feel true, truth feels threatening, and democracy becomes vulnerable.
Why do smart people fall for obvious falsehoods?
Why is misinformation so powerful—and so hard to correct?
Why have political identities hardened into something like cult loyalty?
Drawing from psychology, political science, history, and today’s fractured media landscape, Fry shows how ignorance is no longer accidental—it is manufactured, sustained, and weaponized. The book also offers practical guidance for navigating conversations with loved ones caught in misinformation, and outlines the critical thinking and media literacy skills needed to rebuild a shared commitment to truth.
Clear, accessible, and urgently relevant, Weaponization of Ignorance is a roadmap for understanding—and resisting—the forces tearing America apart.
