Trained in the art of hoodoo, sixteen year old Therese Conghalach first exhibits her powers as a witch while giving birth to her daughter on the floor of a pharmacy in New Orleans. Her abilities are as strong as they are unexpected by her Grandmere, Alice Laveau Conghalach, who finds a need for Therese to exercise her powers when another Creole family seeks to destroy them. Winning the battle, Alice seeks to protect Therese and her baby by sending them away from New Orleans to long lost Conghalach family members rumored to be in Wyoming. Using papers dating the history of the Conghalach witches from 1711, they find their family in Cheyenne living under the surname Connolly and operating a successful ranch that gives sanctuary to all who need it. Therese and her baby are more than welcome and thus a new dynasty begins as Therese finds love and skirts danger through the years. Her baby May grows up, becoming a formidable witch herself as she ventures out on her own, returning home for a crucial mission to save her mother. For no matter what happens, Conghalach means victory.
This is Julie Anne Franklin’s first book, the first in a series about this particular family of witches. She is a former Chicagoan living in South Carolina. Along with writing, she also does illustrations, has a Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America, and was once a Master Jeweler. Arthritis has settled her down to just wearing jewelry instead of making it. The next book featuring Dennis Connolly and Lilia Conghalach is called BLOOD BORNE WITCHES.
