n Redbird, Zane is a sixth grader new to Redbird, an inner-city grade school in a poor working class neighborhood called The Birds. From the beginning it’s apparent that Zane is aware that something is wrong with the school at a level he doesn’t immediately grasp. He has moved into an apartment across from the school and lives with his physically abusive father and alcoholic mother. The school, which is haunted by an evil that preys on the weak, damaged or vulnerable has made Zane its play thing. Zane is practically deaf and wears hearing aids, one which talks to him. His attachment to a kindergartner leads to a final decision that Zane must make in his battle with the school, and the battle for his own sanity and life.
